Rhaella Targaryen decided to divorce her husband when she found out she was pregnant again, as the last thing she wanted was to expose a new child to Aerys. By the time Daenerys was born, the divorce was finalized, and Rhaella felt a bit lost. Following Rhaegar’s suggestion that a change of scenery will be for good for her, Viserys and Dany, she bought a house on the outsides of the city, in the Winterfell area that Lyanna had found for them, and her father was close by to help if Rhaella ever needed anything.
Most of the Stark kids had left the family home. Brandon was married to Catelyn and waiting for their first child, Ned had recently married Ashura, and Lyanna had moved in with Rhaegar, only Benjen remained in the family home, and he was busy with his grades and extracurriculars for university. This left Rickard with a lot of free time once he was done with work, and as the mother of his future son-in-law -not to mention Lyanna’s request, helping her and the kids settle better was the least he could do.
It started with a tentative friendship than then turned into a peculiar sense of companionship. It was gradual and slow, more time in each other’s presence, Viserys basically following Rickard everywhere and Dany reaching for him the moment she saw him, dinners between all of them, Benjen basically claiming the role of big brother. It was a warm and peaceful sense of companionship, and neither Rickard nor Rhaella were surprised it had turned into something more and something they wanted to have.
