I don’t understand how people can’t see that boycotting Israeli institutions is steeped in antisemitic exceptionalism.

Why is nobody boycotting British, American, or French academic institutions? They colonized and exploited more than half of the world??

as an israeli academic, i can say that other israeli academics are like the most left-wing of all the segments of the population. there is a “free gaza” sticker on the door of the office of the middle east studies program at the university i work at. that sticker and nothing else. 

if you boycott israeli academics, you close the doors to an influential segment of the population that is very vocally progressive to the point of its own self-ruin. it must be very scary for BDS people to meet israelis funded by the israeli government who agree with them, who are not strawmen, who they can’t point a finger at and scream about loving racism and apartheid. it is very convenient and beneficial for anti-zionists to keep israeli academics out of their circles, because it keeps those academics from exposing the fact that israelis aren’t an evil fascist hivemind, and anything that complicates their understanding of israel is right out.
