This steven universe episode really made a big impact on how abusive parents are portrayed, especially in a childrens show, in a way children will understand.
White diamond (the abusive parent) had control over everyone. The gems. The diamonds. All of them. She claimed to be perfect and flawless, and everyone believed it to be true. So much that they doubted themselves. THATS RIGHT. THE DIAMONDS DOUBTED THEMSELVES. White took their doubt and used it to make them depend on her and her approval, making herself powerful.
This is the exact way abusive parents use self doubt in their children, that they instilled and enforced, to make the child ‘respect’ and depend on the abusive parent. This is codependency.
Steven spent his whole life wondering who he was. Who is mom was. If he really was his mom. White used this doubt of himself to make herself seem perfect.
But when his gem was removed and his ‘life light’ existed outside of him he knew what it was. It wasnt his mom. It wasnt pink diamond. It wasnt rose quartz. It was him. It was steven. He was steven all along.
When he finally is able to truly without any doubt know who he is, is when white finally loses her control over him. He and his life light had been hurt repeatedly for centuries. But he stands there as himself and only himself.
He existed as himself without white diamonds approval. Without that doubt he finally was able to break whites control. He finally exposed what her ‘power’ was. An illusion. As all light is an illusion her ‘perfection’ was too. She was so blinded by her own ‘radiance’ she had to blind others to keep them from seeing her flaws that she knows where in herself.
She admits she has all the colors of the light inside her. She has all of the best traits, claiming that made a balance. But balance is only there when the flaws are balanced to. She knew she had all of their flaws but refused to admit it.
When steven stands before white and against her 'power’ she realizes shes lost. The illusion is broke.
When the victim stands before their abuser and against their 'power’ they will realize theyve lost. The illusion will break.
