sometimes i talk about how awful it was to feel trapped by my daily makeup routine and how i couldn’t leave the house without putting on a full face and it played a major role in the misery of my high school experience because i had to spend so much extra time getting ready in the mornings and that followed me into my early 20s as well and it was hell and it was so incredibly liberating to go through the slow and uncomfortable but ultimately essential process of getting my bare face back and having makeup be an optional accessory instead of a mandatory uniform. and the response always tends to be ah yes of course, because of your trans and your masculine. and it’s like aha so close! actually! I think if I ended up being a feminine cis woman I also still would not deserve even a second of that shit! I think trans women and nonbinary people and every human alive should have the option to leave the house without a single cosmetic product ever touching their face! but thanks for playing!

Apparently today is Loving Day, named after Richard and Milford Loving, the interracial couple whose lawsuit against the state of Virginia resulted in interracial marriage becoming legal in the United States. And so this day was made as a holiday for interracial relationships. I think that's very cool and deserves a tumblr post. Happy Loving Day to everyone in interracial relationships!

Your posting about language politics makes me think, how often do you think that it gets assumed by strangers that shane can't speak French. Jj and Shane probably also find a commonality in people assuming that they can't speak French cuz they're not white too now that I think of it.

So Montrealers might want to weigh in on this. I don't live there, I don't know. But this is exactly what I always assumed the most common racial microaggression would be for Shane.

Now, that's influenced by my time in France and the fact that there is definitely a racialized bias around who's speaking "correct" French (and policing of accents is very intense). France is also...ah, okay. I'm from the most libbed out multi-culti place on the fucking planet. A majority of my childhood friends spoke something other than English at home. So moving to France was like. Oh this is a monoculture. And there's an undeniable racial aspect to it.

And I don't know from experience how much I can map my understanding of those politics over to Quebec since you know, it's not France. But I can't help but feel like there would be something here, especially given how intertwined ethnicity is with language in Quebec.

If people have good books on this actually I'd be quite interested. I've read the (in)famous Jan Wong article "Get under the desk" which connects gun violence in Quebec to the "alienating [effect of] the decades-long linguistic struggle".

Now really weird connection here: I knew about Jan Wong from her book Red China Blues, which was in conversation in a few of my circles in connected to the Eileen Gu thing (deep, long sigh) and also Three Body Problem. Also randomly my mentor second degree knows Jan Wong, apparently, because he randomly mentioned this Chinese-American classmate who quit her math PhD to join the Maoist cause, and anyway I was staring at him slack-jawed and I was like "what are you talking about" and he just shrugged and said "it was the 70s," like that's an explanation.

Anyway this is uhhhh all to say I don't know where to put Wong's article, or anything else on this topic, but I do think it's pretty fascinating and I definitely think this would realistically be something that impacts both Shane and JJ and they'd bond over it, even if they never say as much out loud (I think Shane is the kind of guy who doesn't like to dwell on things).
