What is robot goth?

Let’s start with some questions:

1. Are you autistic?

2. Are you tense all the time?

3. Were you labeled “mature for your age” as a child?

4. Are you withdrawn to the point of your peers knowing nothing about you?

5. Do you have a stony, emotionless gaze?

6. Are you quiet to the point of normal speaking almost being painful sometimes?

7. Are you polite to a fault?

8. Do you feel like state of the art software stored on faulty slow hardware?

9. Are you rule driven and fall in line easily?

10. Are you criticized for “using big words?”

11. Do you feel on the edge of burnout or meltdown constantly?

12. No matter what you say or what you do, do you feel like you are always out of sync with the people around you and that people will always fault you for it?

13. Do you like robot media, synthesizer music, or actual robots/STEM?

If you answered “yes” to most of those questions then you might be robot goth. Robot goth is a style that explores the gloomy nature, mental anguish, and the pressure to perform of certain kinds of autism through the lense of machinery. Many autistic people relate to robots in one way or another (is it any surprise that Gary Numan is autistic?) Robot goth examines the feelings of isolation, exhaustion, and panic of autism.

* This blog is mostly a moodboard for me, but I will be posting my robot goth garments and concept books.

* This blog is anti-exclusion. Anyone can be robot goth. Let me repeat:

* Neurotypical people are welcome on this page, but I ask that you don’t separate the aesthetic from its context. Always remember the autistic roots of this aesthetic.

i think more robots should be disabled actually. robots whose bodies keep falling apart and need much more consistent repairs. robots whose bodily upkeep is hard and laborious and exhausting. robots who physically cant do things without help from another individual. robots who are imperfect and dont fit the bill of a flawless machine. i want more of this waiter please bring me more disabled robots

In this household, I’m the only machine that’s allowed to do any type of thinking.

My brain is a high tech processor. It’s buggy, for sure but it is one of a kind and it needs constant troubleshooting, updates, and most importantly, it needs practice and constant runtime.

I cannot outsource my computing to another machine. Sure, it would be easier, but between me and ChatGPT I’m the only one that passed the Turing test. Sure, I only got a C, but it’s better than any generative AI.

We all need to use our own processors. The human brain is a more capable and creative machine than any generative AI. We cannot become complacent with outsourcing our internal computing.
