As a child, I loved rocks with star-shaped patterns. These were usually small limestone pebbles with intricate dark patterns on their surface, reminiscent of stars or snowflakes. I thought these patterns were the rocks themselves, but only recently did it dawn on me that they were apparently some kind of crustose lichen that prefers this porous mineral as a substrate. Despite the fact that the reality turned out to be so prosaic, I still love these rocks.
