Billie Holiday (April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959) had been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. Her doctor told her to stop drinking, which she did for a short time, but soon returned to heavy drinking. By May she had lost 20 pounds.

On 31 May 31 1959, the 44-year-old Holiday was taken to Metropolitan Hospital in New York suffering from liver and heart disease. She was arrested for drug possession as she lay dying, and her hospital room was raided by authorities. Police officers were stationed at the door to her room. Holiday remained under police guard at the hospital until she died from pulmonary edema and heart failure caused by cirrhosis of the liver on 17 July 1959. She died with 70 cents in the bank and $750 (about $6,000 in today’s currency) on her person (she had been cheated out of most of her earnings).
