Rock & Roar is the story of Miles Kitteridge, a streetwise feline and aspiring young musician trying to find his place in the world. It is a graphic novel about an animal rock band in the 80s, made for music lovers and anyone who's ever dreamed big.

Here I continued to refine the condor idea, and I also explored a turkey vulture, which is my personal favorite vulture. These are the two vultures that are native here in California. Both species have neat qualities. As always, I love to see what the community's thoughts are!

Happy Friday! Here's something fun. Weeks ago, a commenter on another platform suggested a California Condor for Kyle's species when I shared how I was open to exploring different kinds of vultures. I've kept that in the back of my mind since then, and today I tried it out. I kept the art pretty loose since I haven't committed to the design yet.

Since birds in Rock & Roar are bigger than real life, I based his size on the California condor's wingspan being almost 10ft across and thought "what if each wing was 10 feet long?" (for reference, Jimmy is about 6ft tall). But when looking at this photo of similar species interacting, I thought maybe the scale is hilariously accurate to real life.

And seeing Kyle now, we understand how bullies left Jimmy alone in school haha.

Unless people surprise me and really like this, I'm probably not going this direction. But it was fun to explore, and I love the opportunity to represent native (and critically endangered) wildlife from my state.

Where would our band Fearless Minds be without their loyal drummer, Shawn Bernard? He is cheerful, thoughtful, and remarkably humble despite his musical talent and big brains (yes, this sometimes silly-appearing pooch majored in biochemical engineering!). His self-confidence speaks for itself and he’s got nothing to prove. We’ll see in upcoming art that he loves the outdoors, especially if snow is involved, and as someone who grew up in a large litter with limited resources, he is grateful for all that he has and for the opportunities he’s been given. Happy Friday! Let’s revisit the original Jimmy and Kyle! Before he became a coyote last year, Jimmy had been a jackal, and Kyle was a white-backed vulture. My whole idea of Jimmy and Kyle was inspired by the numerous photos and footage of these vultures and black-backed jackals scavenging together in real life. I really love these two characters and could do a whole comic just about their adventures!

In terms of design and attitude, jackals and coyotes are a super similar concept, just on different continents. I love what either option brings to the story of Rock & Roar 2. I will not guarantee what Jimmy and Kyle will ultimately end up being, as the story is very much still a rough draft and anything can happen! I love exploring all the possibilities.

Other animals may view Jimmy and Kyle as losers on the bottommost rung of society, but nobody can deny their resourcefulness and talent for survival! And one thing’s for sure, wherever the story of Rock & Roar 2 goes, “Trash Dog” will get the chance to prove all that he’s truly got to offer.
