Flipping through Philip Norman's biography, I found that there was a rumor about a possible relationship between Elton and Melanie Green, the 17-year-old daughter of a banker, thanks to her being seen at events and parties after concerts. Was it probably all a facade to counteract the recent news of Elton's bisexuality after the Rolling Stone interview, or was there some truth?

kept in that second paragraph because homophobia? in my elton john biography? it’s more likely than you think! i mean really i think phillip norman wrote the ultimate elton bio but sometimes…. sometimes i hate what he adds in. and that quote really pisses me off🤮

anyway we really have no other info about her as far as i know, i KNOW there’s a magazine clipping talking about this rumor from the 70s ive seen but i can’t find it for the life of me. i’m gonna go digging a bit more and if i find it i’ll attach it to this post. but that’s the only other time ive seen her mentioned! and it includes a photo of them together

so this is gonna be pure speculation for me. no, i don’t think they were actually romantically connected. i don’t think elton has had any true romance with women, other than renate of course (linda doesn’t count lmao) on the other hand, i don’t think management was trying to push the relationship to counteract the rolling stone interview or anything. (even though JR and co were sweating a bit after album sales dropped, particularly in the USA, because of it!) beyond having elton hold hands with girls at events/in front of paparazzi, or vaguely talking about women in interviews, management never really pushed a true “beard” onto him particularly. i think this was just the press speculating and forming stories. this happened a good amount with elton, having dating rumors with kiki dee, billie jean king, even ann margaret, and the list goes on. elton would hang with women in a friendly way and the press would latch onto that. though i must say, melanie is not a celebrity like the other people i mentioned, so it makes it slightly different. it almost seems like she was a fan, and elton liked her enough, that he let her hang around? the way it’s described is interesting…
