Rogério Duarte (1964)

Poster of the movie Deus e o Diabo na terra do Sol (God and the Devil in the land of the Sun), a classic movie from 1964 filmed in the Northeast of Brazil. I like the composition of the poster and how he combines international style and constructivism. Rogerio Duarte even states that he got inspiration in the work of Sergei M. Eisenstein. He uses photomontage, colours and typography without serify in a clean layout with geometric shapes.

The red colour in this context is related to violence, blood, passion, heat and also revolution, the reality of the barbarian countryside of the northeast in this period.

I love this artist. His name is Cristiano Suarez, a brazilian illustrator from Maceió. He made this poster for the punk group Dead Kennedy that was about to have a concert in Brazil in 2019. 

I like the symbolism of the picture. The image in the poster clearly represents the conservative “traditional brazilian family”. The brazilian team jersey became a symbol of the right wing political spectrum, conservatism and movements against democracy. In the jersey, the crest has a cross representing the christian groups acting in the politics. The symbol in the armbands is a reference to the “Ação Integralista Brasileira” (Brazilian Integralist Action) a fascist and nacionalist movement created in 1932. On the background we have a Favela (Slum) on fire and the boy says “I love the smell of poor dead in the morning”. This is a reference to the movie Apocalypse Now (1979), “I Love The Smell Of Napalm In The Morning”.

The Brilliant colours of Breaking Bad

I have never seen a series that plays so good with colours as Breaking Bad did. A good example is Skyler. (Spoiler alert) In the beginning of the story she only uses light blue, all the time. Blue stands for loyalty and dependability on Breaking Bad. It also means Purity (as someone pure, but also blue is the colour of the meth produced by Walt and Jesse, the purest meth ever). The colours of Skyler’s clothes change when she starts to flirt with Ted, she starts using a darker blue or even purple (she loses her loyalty and pureness). When she discovers the place where Walter hides his money she uses green and brown and when she becomes an accomplice of Walter’s crimes she starts to use deeper and darker colours until she finally uses black.

This poster is called Books, and this is a political poster, when Rodchenko started to get really involved with the Communist Party and it is an important graphic piece of the russian Constructivist art. I like the contrast between a photograph (organic and texturized) with the shapes (solid and flat). Also, the diagonal movement that makes the word get out of her mouth is really interesting for a collage.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens 

I like this poster because of the use of complementary colours in each side of the image (red and orange with blue and purple). Of course, they are also colours that can represent the dark side and the light. Complementary colours are naturally pleasant and it is really common in movie posters. Despite the amount of information this poster is well balanced with the colours and the shapes with diagonal orientation in both sides.

Poster proposal to the group Baiana System.

It is a brazilian band and their music style is quite confusing, since it is a mix of multiple styles. The song of Baiana System is a merge of traditional northeast brazilian music (characterized by typical dance, strong usage of drums and the african roots) with many other styles. The tone of their unique style represents the energy, psychedelism and the contrast between the organic flow of the traditional music and the power of modern music. From a design perspective, there are complexities that make sense if we analyze and understand the target aesthetic. I'd argue that the objective here is to attract people who want a different experience and show them that the music has a mood that can purify your soul and gives you strength and the softness that makes you want to dance.

Who did this?

If you search on Instagram you can find a profile called @rachaellic and I can describe it as the first fully automated autonomous 3D design influencer in the world. Basically, “Rachael” uses Artificial Intelligence technology to instantly create wonderful 3D modelling art. It uses the ‘deep learning’ idea to understand and recognize what is more likeable, what kind of colours and textures are more pleasing to the major audience on instagram and reproduce it. It sounds crazy, but there is no human being touching this account and “she” has been posting new images every day without human intervention, since May 2020. Despite the aesthetic attribute of the pictures her art is totally abstract, which means that they are arranged in a pretty layout with a good combination of colour and flawless modelling and rendering details, but they do not make any sense.

Klaus: An Animated Masterpiece Klaus is the Netflix first original animated feature and tells the story about Jesper and his christmas adventures in the cold and terrible Meerensburgh.

It’s hard to believe that this footage is 2D animation, something that we don’t see much of these days (Why? It’s a big risk and really expensive). Classic animations take more time and also more people (There were 40 animators working behind the scenes of Klaus). But Netflix accepted and it resulted in a beautiful story with an amazing visual. What makes the animation so great is the emphasis on light and colour. This lighting is a manual process drawn frame by frame with an outstanding level of artistry and precision. The result is a 2D animation that looks like 3D, but it’s just the effects of light and shadow.

Google´s new logos

Google app's new look brings it very much in line with the rest of Google Workspace – something that's proving a point of contention among users. The intention of Google is understandable, they want to unify the visual language of the various apps in its suite. It's certainly consistent with the rest of Google's icons, but this consistency is exactly why some users are unhappy because the problems begin when it is placed next to the other Google Workspace icons.

She is Yemanjá, one of the Orixás (Goddess) in Candomblé religion. White roses are used as a ritual offering. She is the Queen of the Ocean, the patron spirit of the fishermen and the survivors of shipwrecks, the feminine principle of creation, and the spirit of moonlight.
