the no bullshit guide to getting your shit together: for the lazy student
Let’s be honest: time management and organization? They’re really hard. Sure, at first you might feel like you’ve gotten the hang of them, that you’re in control of your life. But how often have you fallen off the wagon? Procrastinated on one thing and the next moment, you’re behind in all your classes? I know that sometimes laziness feels like a part of who you are, but honestly, fuck that. Do you really want to give up your success for the disinterest of a moment?
If your answer is no (it better be no, or you really need to get your priorities straight), let’s get to it.
STEP ONE: BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF
“This class doesn’t even matter.” “I don’t care about my grades.” “I can finish this the day before.” Sound familiar? You might feel great now, but when you’re staring down at your report card later, it’ll feel like you just got punched.
This is a cliche, but the greatest obstacle to your success is yourself - especially the lies you tell yourself! Sit yourself down and be honest about what you need to improve on. Be as blunt as you can, but for god’s sake, don’t throw yourself a pity party! There’s no use agonizing over what you can’t change. Instead, set realistic, achievable goals, and make a game plan. Struggling with math? Go to extra help. Behind in all your classes? Stay in for a couple nights and actually work.
STEP TWO: STOP WITH THE FANCY SHIT
Now you know what your goals are, but maybe you want some inspiration, so you log on to tumblr and are instantly bombarded by all these beautiful, well lit shots of the most gorgeous bullet journals, planners, and notes. Impressive, right? Well, I’m gonna let you in on a little secret: they’re all useless! A simple phone planner works just as well, if not better, than a fancy agenda, because you’ll always have it on you, it’s not a hassle to carry around, and you don’t feel obligated to make it look pretty.
Riddle me this, where are you going to find all this extra motivation to keep prettying up your bullet journal? To write all your notes in perfect, colour coded printing? There aren’t many times in life where taking the easy was out will actually benefit you, so take advantage! Stop wasting your time; get a phone planner and write your notes in your natural goddamn handwriting.
STEP THREE: CLEAN YOUR ROOM
Yep, your entire room - not just your study space! This one can be put on the back burner for a bit if you’re on a really pressing deadline, but I wouldn’t recommend it. I’m notoriously messy, and if I don’t watch myself, I’d find myself in dirty-laundry-and-old-notes hell. A little bit of organized chaos is fine, I even encourage it! But try working when your desk is covered in mounds of paper and you have nowhere to put your laptop – it’s just not conducive to success.
Keeping your entire room clean is a way to stave off stress, frustration, and even embarrassment, because nobody wants to show potential roommates how much of a mess they are.
STEP FOUR: ACTUALLY WORK
Yeah, I know what you’re thinking: “actually work? Who does this girl think she is?” I’d probably think the same thing, except I’ve learned the valuable lesson of sucking it the hell up, and you will too. When you get home from work, grab a snack and work. When you have a free period, figure out what’s due and work. Stop reasoning yourself out of work: you’re not going to finish this later, and that will be on the test. There’s really not much to say about this one, because it’s the step that requires the most raw effort, and you’re really only going to find that within yourself. Tell yourself what’s at stake, and realize that, by setting the standard for your mediocrity now, you’re potentially trapping yourself in a cycle that will last for years.
STEP FIVE: CUT YOURSELF SOME SLACK
Maybe you’ve been on top of your shit for a day, a week, or even a month, and that’s really great. But then… you fail. You miss a deadline or you bomb a test. So what do you do now? Do you allow yourself to fall back into your old habits? Fuck no! Everyone fails, even that studyblr with those perfect bullet journal photos and a perpetually clean study space. I’m going to tell you something that’ll sound really strange: you should value your failures, especially if you worked hard to avoid them. What?! Be HAPPY about failing when I actually TRIED? Yeah, you heard me right. If you don’t know how to handle failure, then when you inevitably experience it, your reaction will be much worse.
Failing hurts, and boy, I know how embarrassing it can be. But learning how to deal with failure, and especially how to keep trying after it happens, is an invaluable lesson.
STEP SIX: TREAT. YO. SELF.
Disclaimer: I’m not suggesting you treat yourself after the most basic of tasks, because please. Treat yourself when you know you goddamn well deserve it. Remember that “all work and no play makes jack a dull boy.” If all you do is study and do your homework, then, pardon my french, your life sucks. If you don’t have friends, play a video game! Eat an entire jumbo chocolate bar! Indulge in whatever the fuck you want, you deserve it. I’m someone that has trouble prioritizing future benefits over immediate gratification, so by allowing myself little pleasures, I save myself from crashing and burning.
Hope these tips helped, but remember to take them with a grain of salt - you’re you and I’m me, and different things work for different people. Good luck!
Apps for productivity and time management
There is no doubt that phones and laptops can be distracting when trying to study. Attempting to balance using either for fun and working can be difficult, especially if get distracted easily. Here are 12 apps that you can download to make your time management a million times better!
Forest - $1.99 iOS | free android | chrome | firefox | website Grow a tree each time you set a period of time to focus. Exit the app and your little tree dies! You can add friends, unlock new trees, exchange coins for real trees (!!), and track each time you are productive. A lot of people ask if this app is worth it and I’d say definitely. It is the cutest time management application I’ve come across. Whilst there are similar alternatives, I like this the best. You can add me using my email: [email protected]. If you’d like me to add you back, send me your account address!
FocusNow - free | iOS | website Very similar to Forest, but free! Grow a plant whilst you work and leaving app means your tree dies. The app also helps to build your habits with progress tracking and reminders. You can add friends and compete against them! This is definitely a great alternative to Forest if you don’t want to pay.
Tide - free | iOS | android | website If you enjoy listening to something whilst studying but get distracted with regular playlists, this app is for you! Combining white noise - either the ocean, rain, forest, meditation and a coffee shop - you can block out distractions whilst managing your time. I seriously love the minimalist design of this app.
ClearFocus - free | iOS | android | website A really simple app that alternates working sessions with short breaks. You can set a time for your break sessions which will help you actually get back to studying. You can also check out statistics on your progress which is great for improving your discipline.
Be Focused - free iOS | $4.99 mac | website A very detailed to-do list and pomodoro timer combined. Again, it alternates time periods with short breaks! This app can be synced between all your devices which is awesome if you use different ones during the day. I like the simple design of this one too!
Focus To-Do: $1.49 | iOS One of the top five productivity apps in China! It is a super comprehensive app with loads of features so if you enjoy tracking your productivity, this is one for you! Unfortunately, it is only available on iOS and costs.
Focus Keeper - free | iOS Simple and flexible app for time tracking with lots of options for customisation. I think it’s really cool the app adds a widget on notifications when you’re using the app. You can also choose background music to help you focus.
Pomodoro: Grow and Harvest - free | iOS Very similar to Forest in essence of growing a plant, however upon completion you get to harvest your fruit. I actually really like the design of this app. Unlike Forest, your crops don’t die if you exit the application but the timer does reset. This is good in a way since you’ll stay on the app but could get annoying if you were to check something but wanted to leave the timer running.
Flat Tomato - free | iOS | website A really cool and interactive app! You can easily plan out an hour of your time with certain periods for working and others for a long and short break. I think it is a great way to keep focus without having to reset your phone. You can also reflect on your daily motivation, distractions and possible improvements. There are loads of customisation of settings, colours and sounds.
Pomodrone - free with pro version | iOS | website Simple and cute flat design timer app. The free version is only a pomodoro timer with 25 minute working and 5 minute break periods. Whilst you don’t have control over changing these times, it is quite good if you want to be strict with your time. If you purchase the pro version, you have the option to change the times and colours, set daily goals and see performance statistics.
Brain Focus Productivity Timer - free | android One of the most popular time management apps for android. You can set specific tasks with certain times which is great for improving your efficiency and discipline. For instance, if you do a task each day you can have certain work and break times, and then access it quickly. Another cool option is that you can easily add a couple of extra minutes to the timer without needing to reset the whole thing. Definitely, a great option, especially since it is free!
FocusList: Focus timer and daily planner - $4.99 iOS | $4.99 mac I really like the look of this app! You can plan out your daily to-do, set estimated times and then get on to using the timer to focus. This is great for improving your speed and prioritising your daily tasks. The statistics option allows you keep a track of your productivity! As well as being on your mac, you can use an Apple Watch for timing which I think is really cool! Sadly, it is a little expensive.
These are just a few time management and productivity apps that I’ve come across whilst running a studyblr. If you’ve got any other app suggestions, please let me know via my ask! I hope you found this list useful and have found a new way to be productive! If any of these apps help, please let me know! x

Interviews can be horribly intimidating, but if you prepare well enough, feel confident in yourself, and keep your cool, then you’ll do amazingly! Here are some tips on how to ace interviews in different situations, with some general tips thrown in for fun. Good luck, and hopefully something in here will help you out!
College Interviews
Tips
Know plenty about the college you’re applying to. Highlighting a particular attribute you love about the college as well as having a good general knowledge base shows the interviewer that you are sincerely interested and have done your homework.
Be able to describe why you are a good fit for the college. Interviewers want to ensure that you’re a good candidate both in paper and on person, so consider things you’ve done that show character.
Choose a favourite book and be able to talk about it. College interviewers love to ask, so think about the impression you want to give beforehand and consider it carefully.
Have a question about the college that the website doesn’t answer. It shows your preparedness, and gives you a way to continue the conversation and demonstrate your interest in the interviewer’s perspective!
Bring a copy of your academic resume. Interviewers will see you as more prepared, have a concrete reference for their write-up, and have talking points during the interview for anything interesting that’s on there.

Scholarship Interviews
Tips
Be able to tell the interviewer why you deserve the scholarship. Don’t simply rattle off your achievements, but rather present yourself as the student most aligned with the scholarship’s mission and the most ready to succeed.
Make sure to link your accomplishments to the scholarship’s mission statement. Scholarship providers often have pillars (like philanthropy, promoting the community, etc.) which you should uphold.
Don’t be afraid to take a moment to think about oddball questions. It’s better to give a well-developed and thought out response to which vegetable you’d be than bumble through it simply because it was unexpected!
Know your application essays well. I’ve been asked to elaborate on my community service plans and why I chose to do band because of my essays, so knowing the topics well will undoubtedly help you out and show passion.

Job Interviews
Tips
Make it seem like the company needs you. When asked why you want the job, address how the company will benefit from employing you, and not how you will benefit as a person.
Bring materials. Have letters of recommendation, a resume, and your portfolio (if applicable) on hand. Make sure to have multiple copies in case there are multiple interviewers.
Research the employer. Know the company history, its mission, recent events, and the values/vision it advertises. Tailor your presentation of yourself to match those ideals.
Determine your greatest strength and weakness. You will likely be asked this question, so be able to give an example, demonstrate how you have overcome your weakness, and how you have used your strength.

So, I decided to make this post for you guys and I hope you find these tips as helpful as I did :)
1. Never compare yourself to others, but really, NEVER do it.
From my personal experience, I can tell you there’s nothing more destructive than comparing yourself to another person. Every single one of us unique and has their own amazing skills. Maybe one of your friends aces Physics class but you rule when it comes to Chemistry class or a foreign language. Also never let anyone make you feel like you’re not awesome because you are. As Eleanor Roosevelt would say “No one can make feel inferior without your consent.” So don’t let them and wWhat you do, do it for you.
2. See what you’re missing and do it.
If you pay attention and make fantastic notes, but still you don’t reach your desired goal and you know you can do better, check what is missing. Maybe is studying for the exam. Maybe is handing in the homework. Maybe it can be related to a poor sleep or nutrition. You gotta identify what is wrong and do something to change it.
3. Sit up front.
Again, I have experienced this and when I sit in the back I completely lose my focus and immediately start to talk with my friends and doodling on the back of my notebook. Look for the seats right in the front, you’ll be able to pay more attention to what the teacher/lecturer is saying and you’ll be more likely to get done your work fast.
4. Time management.
As a big procrastinator, I can tell you that not having a schedule or not planning your tasks can be really harmful to your grades. I know sometimes Season 4 of Sherlock sound more fun than Spanish reading but you need to prioritize. Make a list, from the most important task to the least, that way if you do not complete everything, you will have ready the most essential duties. Be strong and work hard, then relax.
5. Eat well and sleep well.
As I wrote in one of the past points, sleep and food can be a really influent factor in your school performance. If you only eat junk food and sleep four hours, you’ll be more likely to fall asleep in class or even to suffer a lack of focus and energy because of not nurturing your body properly. I know sometimes homework takes more time that we expected to get done but if it’s not school work or something really important, you should try not to stay awake (even more if your reason to lose hours of precious sleep is to be scrolling down Instagram or Tumblr, which can be done next day). Eat your veggies and get 8-hour sweet dreams.
6. Stay hydrated.
Drink at least 2 liters of water per day. It increases energy and relieves fatigue, promotes weight loss, flushes out toxins and will get you closer to the perfect skin we all want.
7. Pray
Personally, this has been really important to me, especially when it comes to a big exam or a contest. Praying always gives me peace and makes me feel more confident. I invite you to try it, you’ll see the difference. Also, studies have demonstrated that prayer helps you to have more self-control and makes you less vulnerable to the negative physical health effects associated with stress.
8. Pretend that you’ll have to teach the material you are learning, that way you’ll pay more attention and be more likely to memorize it fast.
Always do your best and remember that good thing take time.
