On Sunday July 19 in Bologna (Italy) a 42 y.o. Moroccan man by the name of Abderrahim Fakir died while being arrested by the police. The police had been called because of a man kicking stuff and yelling for help. He was hit with pepper spray and immobilised on the ground; the medics were only allowed to come near him when he was already passed out on the ground bound at wrists and ankles, and they could do nothing except to declare him dead (medical personnel has to wait for the police's permission to come near someone who's being arrested). Everything was caught on camera by people in nearby buildings, and you can hear him scream "Help, stop" (Aiuto, basta).

The neighbourhood and the city immediately organised a protest/manifestation, which of course turned violent (you will only read that it was because of the people protesting, but the police does not handle protests really well here so you can never know for sure how/why it got violent). The policemen involved in this death/arrest have not even been suspended from their jobs; the same department will probably be involved in the investigation as to what happened.

Giorgia Meloni, our PM, condemned the death of the man but stressed that it does not justify violence against the police: "What happened in Bologna is unacceptable. It is imperative that possible responsibilities around the death of A. Fakir are confirmed with utmost precision. Truth has to be found without prejudices and no exceptions for anyone. But nothing can musty violence against the police". Notice "possible responsibilities", as if an arrest ending in death could somehow be nobody's fault. ("Quanto accaduto a Bologna è inaccettabile. Sul decesso di Abderrahim Fakir è doveroso che vengano accertate eventuali responsabilità con il massimo rigore. La verità va ricercata fino in fondo, senza pregiudizi e senza sconti per nessuno. Ma nulla può giustificare la violenza contro le forze dell'ordine".

I do not know how to end this post, as I'm not sure on what any of us can do about this, but it's important that it does not get swept under the rug. Italy has a racism problem, a police violence problem, and a right-wing government problem (+ other issues not relevant to the topic), but I don't know how common knowledge this is.
