“Luchino and I have the same idea of Elisabeth. The opposite of what people think or saw, of the three films I made on Elisabeth of Austria, who is a completely different woman. There are some things about this character and her life that truly touch me, but at the same time this makes me deeply sad because I have read a lot about her… we are similar… and there is still a little fear, and whether I like it or not, the mark of the empress of Austria which I struggled so much to get rid of will still press with all its weight to make my Elisabeth authentic.”

Romy Schneider & Alain Delon attending the Ciak D’Oro Award gala in Roma on July 29, 1961.
