Random Thoughts
One of the best decisions I made was enrolling in Global World Entry (you also get the benefit of TSA precheck for domestic travel). Anyway, when I landed, I literally grabbed my bag and glided right through customs, without having to wait in the 30+ minute lines. Great choice! Lastly, I learned a few things on this trip... Santa Marta Favela Notes: 75 years old. Gentrification is a problem here - the government wants to build hotels on top of favelas, etc. Law in Brazil: if there's a Catholic Church, you cannot tear down the buildings around it. long ago, priests brought in workers to build a famous church at the base of Santa Marta. The church could barely afford to pay workers for housing and the process was taking so long, the workers started living towards the top of the hill. The priest erected a chapel close to the homes, which led to their ultimate protection due to the state law. All favelas have resident associations due to the government being worse than the drug dealers. Water is also a big problem as it mixes with the trash any creates "something special." Water and light bill comes to the favelas house but other mail doesn't. Upa pe police - police have special training to deal with people in the favelas. All the government did when they pacified the favelas was get rid of the drug dealers and send taxes but nothing else. 113 police officers. 6000 people Only 38 favelas are pacified (police presence on site) 6000 people live in Santa Marta. No schools in the favela, so kids are encouraged to travel outside of favela and not build gangs or relationships with dealers within the favelas. Olodum is the drum band from northern Brazil (Salvadore). The same band Michel Jacksons "They Don't Really Care About Us." Favela means "tree" . Religious people tried to take rio, fought 4 days to get the city back. They built the first homes on a mountain that looked similar to the favela trees If you carry the torch and want to keep it, you have to pay.

Random Thoughts
The city is a lot different without all the Olympic visitors. It was a great choice to stay a few days after the Olympic Games were over to ensure that we could experience Rio as close to the way it normally is. The people are still very welcoming and patient, the lines are considerably shorter for everything and it seems the tourists took the warm weather back to where they came from because it's been a bit cooler since Sunday. We went to a boat party last night set to sail from midnight to 4am...one of the best decisions we made as a unit during this trip was to get off of the boat right before it departed. We were cold, tired and hungry... 4 hours on a boat would not have served us well. Instead we found an outdoor Samba spot (Pedre do Sal), where a bunch of locals hang on Monday and dance the night away.

Walk in to a huge pool and outside area - unfortunately it was raining so no swimming last night. And upstairs, there's more open air space and a huge HUGE nightclub/dance floor with international dj's spinning some of the hottest music.

Random Thoughts Sometimes, you can only look at someone and smile. When you don't understand their language, read the visual clues and put the story together. It works. Last night was the absolute best part of the Olympics. I'll continue to say it, the Carioca people and the city of Rio are nothing like what each has been described in various media sources. Outside of their patient nature, last night exposed me to the true energetic and lively spirit as we danced well past the official end time of the Olympic Closing Ceremony. They took one of the celebrations they are world renowned for and brought it to life to officially end the XXXI Modern Olympic Games - Carnavale! The dancing, the singing, the yelling, the SPIRIT of Carioca was ever present as a famous Brazilian celebrity sung until the Olympic flame was extinguished. Not to mention, the closing ceremony secured my need to not only attend Carnavale in Brazil but also begin the plans for Tokyo 2020!

Surprising that this swimmer brings shame to our whole country and yet people still try to defend his actions. I get told daily, "Shame on USA swimmer..."
