Sandhopper, Taletridae family 3 of 30 in tidepool series, 7.May.2014
I like to catch these little guys at the beaches when I go. I couldn't find a good reference photo of a California species for this drawing, so the reference is the European Talitrus saltator. Oh well.
Incidentally, many people out here call them "sand crabs". They are crustaceans, but not crabs (no claws!)-- they're in a different order called amphipods, marked by the long legs and antennae.

Two from a set of drawings I did for an intertidal ecology project. My oceanography class had done a field trip to Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz and made a survey of organisms in the tide pools at low tide.
Although they're drawn the same size, the clam was only about the size of my pinky nail (presumably not yet at its full adult size), while the mussels were generally thumb sized or larger.
I love selkies, so you can expect to see plenty of selkie sketches from me. this guy is a walrus rather than a seal cuz why not.

Humboldt squid, Dosidicus gigas. 2 of 4 in cephalopod series, 1.May.2014
Humboldt squid live basically all along the western coast of the Americas. They're called diablo rojo in Mexico because they flash bright red and get aggressive in encounters with fishing crews. To be fair, I think we'd all get pretty aggressive if we just wanted to grab a quick fish dinner and suddenly we're hooked and netted and being hauled aboard a boat. But they are delicious as well as beautiful.

Alviso is the nearest shoreline to where I grew up and live now. it's not so much the sea as a big lazy slough meeting the inland tip of a bay, but it's incredibly peaceful there and beautiful on a cloudy day.
