After my talk with Osferth, I seek out Uhtred knowing I will need his help to navigate this delicate situation. Seeing him walking around the courtyard of the fortress with Hati, I rush to catch up to him.
“Lord…” I call out getting the Dane’s attention. “…may I steal a moment of your time?”
Uhtred flashes me a big grin as he nods his head. “I always have time for you, shieldmaiden. Is everything alright? Is the little one having teething pain again?” He asks with concern in his voice.
“Oh, no…Tora is fine. Happy as can be. She’s spending time with Eadwynn.” I smile up at Uhtred. I love how doting he is towards Tora, it’s truly like she has a second father.
“I have something else I wish to discuss with you. Something of a more…delicate nature.” I hint as I glance around making sure we are alone. I see the curiosity in the Danes eyes as he gives me a solemn nod.
Gods, I don’t even know how to broach the subject with Uhtred. Like where do I even start. Oh, yes…my father’s been fucking Finan’s son? Ugh…that sounds so much worse than it is.
“So, a situation has come up, and I’m going to need your help to keep Finan calm. You have a way of grounding him. Helping him to think clearly…and hopefully with an open mind.” I softly start, looking nervously up in Uhtred’s eyes. I can see the curiosity getting stronger in Uhtred’s eyes as he tilts his head inquisitively.
“Of course, Revna. I’ll help in any way I can.” Uhtred offers without hesitation giving me a concerned look.
Taking a deep breath, I steel my nerves. “So, um…you know how my father and Cinaed have become quick friends…”
Uhtred nods, a confused look on his face as to where this is going. “Yeah, I’ve see them sparring in the courtyard on a number of occasions. Impressive warriors…both of them.”
“Yeah, well…” I wring my hands together, my nervousness showing even more. “They are more than just friends…so much more.” I look up into Uhtred’s eyes seeing the confusion in them at my words, his eyebrows furrowed like he’s trying to process them. Gods, please, don’t make me go into details… I wait for a moment until recognition hits Uhtred and his eyes widen in surprise.
“Oh shit…” he whispers in shock.
“Yes, oh shit, is right…” I confirm as I look up into Uhtred’s eyes. The Dane surprises me when he lets out a chuckle. I’m glad he can find amusement in the situation.
“Gods, Finan has been suspicious of something going on between them for awhile…” Uhtred shakes his head, snickering about his husband’s obvious sixth sense.
“Yeah, I know. He sent Osferth out to follow them today. Poor baby monk got an eyeful. He’s practically traumatized by what he witnessed…” I can’t help but laugh too. Gods, this is so absurd. My father sneaking around with his lover like he’s a teenager… “Osferth doesn’t want to be the one to break the news to Finan, and I don’t blame him. It should be them. They need to be the ones to reveal their relationship to Finan.”
“…and you want me to be a voice of reason?” Uhtred offers with a sly smile on his face, nodding in understanding.
“Yes, Uhtred. If anyone can calm Finan in this situation, it’s you. I have never seen my father so happy…and honesty Cinaed for that matter. I want them to have this. Whatever this is between them. I just want Finan to be open minded about it, to not rush to judgement and forbid this like he tried to do with Ronan and Björn. I fear if he does, he will lose Cinaed completely, and this opportunity for him to build some kind of relationship with his son will cease to exist.” I entreat to Uhtred.
Nodding his head, Uhtred gives me a solemn look. “I understand. I will do whatever I can to keep Finan grounded. To give him the support he needs.”
“Thank you, Uhtred…” I give the Dane a tender smile, relieved that he will help.
“Gods, can you imagine? Gunnar and Cinaed?” Uhtred busts out laughing again, shaking his head.
“Yeah, I’d really rather not imagine too much about what goes on between them…” I give Uhtred a smirk. “I just want them to be happy. Like we are with our love.”
Uhtred pulls me into a side hug as we walk along. His smile lighting up his face. “Don’t worry, shieldmaiden. Everything will work out…somehow.” He winks at me and I breathe a sigh of relief.
“I will let you get back to your walk, Lord…” I smile up at the Dane, before glancing as Hati happily walking beside him. “Thank you again…”
“Of course, Revna. Anytime. We’re family and I’m always happy to help in anyway I can.” Uhtred gives me a tender smile.
Giving Uhtred a nod, I bid him farewell as I return to my healing chambers. At least I feel a little more at peace that everything will work out. That cooler heads will prevail, and the love between my father and Cinaed can be preserved.
