She was dancing when he came.
âGrandfather,â she whispered, smiling.
He smiled back at her. âYou have done well. It is time for us to leave.â
Tears filled her eyes before she could stop them.
âWhere are you going?â
He gently stopped her.
âIt is time,â he said. âYou have done well. You are strong. It is time for you to be eagle in this new life.â
She looked at him, confused.
âWhat about you? Where will you go?â
He placed one hand over her heart, then another over her womb.
âWe will always be here,â he said.
He looked at her with quiet certainty.
âIt is time for you to use the knowledge that has been given to you. It is yours now. I have passed it down to you. You will speak our truth. You will carry us in your heart and in your womb.â
She lowered her eyes.
âIt makes me sad,â she said. âI wonât see you again like this.â
It felt as though he had died all over again.
Grandfather always has to leave, she thought.
Then she asked, âHow will I hear you when I talk to you?â
He smiled.
âYouâll know. Youâll hear us in the trees.â
It was something he had always said.
She looked at him once more.
âWill I ever see you again?â
âWhen you sleep,â he said, âI will speak to you in your dreams.â
She smiled through her tears.
Then he turned and walked away.
The dancing remained.
So did the trees.

The Purple Moth
She was beauty. She was light. She was radiant. She was the moon. She was iridescent. Amazing. God, she was delicious, and I couldn't keep my eyes off her.
I fell in love with a woman I didn't even know. A stranger, yet it felt as though I'd known her my whole life.
The way she moved brought me back to that coffee shop day after day. The way she spoke my name was like music, as though I had heard it many times before. The way she made my coffee felt strangely familiar, as if I had tasted it in another lifetime.
One day, I was sitting there, doing my work like I always did, making plans, building. She walked over and smiled.
"Mr. Pharaoh, is there anything you'd like done differently today? Would you like a flower? I found one that reminded me of you."
I chuckled. "Oh yeah?"
"Yeah. I was walking to work and came across this beautiful flower. It smelled like jasmine, but it looked just like a rose. It's funny, because people always tell me I remind them of a rose. But you, sir... you're beautiful too. You always come in smelling of patchouli, but somehow you remind me of jasmine and rose. Yet whenever you leave, there's always a trace of leather in the air. I know this is an odd thing to say, but I feel like you're a flame. When I look at you, something inside me ignites. I think I knew you once."
Then she laughed and walked away.
I don't think she even works at that coffee shop anymore.
The truth is, when she said those things, I understood. Because when she looked at me, I saw it in her eyes.
The purple flame.
The purple flame.
And I was the purple moth that always flew toward it.

Leather and Moondust
God, she was sexy as fuck.
I was standing in the corner when she walked in. She looked over at me, and when she caught me staring, I looked down, pulled out a cigarette, and lit it.
She walked over and smiled.
"Hey. What's your name?"
"Pharaoh."
"It suits you."
She nodded toward my pack.
"You got an extra?"
"An extra what?" I asked, suddenly nervous.
She laughed. "One of those."
"You mean a cigarette?"
"Yeah. What kind do you smoke?"
"Marlboro Lights."
She chuckled. "Shit. Me too."
I handed her one, and we stood there smoking and talking.
"How come I've never seen you around here before?" she asked.
"Because I awakened. I'm new."
I laughed a little.
She shook her head. "You're so weird. But it's cute."
Just then, Tupac's How Do U Want It came on.
"Oh shit," she laughed. "That's my jam."
She started dancing, and before I knew it, we were dancing together.
She turned and looked at me. Our eyes locked.
"Do you feel that?" she whispered.
"Feel what?"
She took my hand and placed it over her heart. Then she rested her hand over mine.
"Do you feel that?"
I looked into her eyes.
"I do."
"That's our hearts," she said. "They're in sync. You are my Pharaoh, and I am your Eagle."
I smiled.
"What's happening to your eyes?"
"You see it, don't you?"
She smiled back.
"You are my moth to my flame. We've loved each other in every lifetime, and we've found each other again."
Suddenly, the moon cast a pink light across the earth. The roof cracked open above us, moon dust drifted through the air, and the stars began to fall.
Everything around us froze.
The room disappeared until it was only the two of us.
"I'll never forget that smile," she said softly. "I'd know it anywhere."
I looked at her, curious.
"It's the dimple," she said. "And the smell of fresh leather. You always smelled like leather."
She kissed the dimple on my cheek, turned, and disappeared.
I never saw her again.
At least not in this lifetime.
But Eagle, wherever you are, I'll find you again.
You hold my heart in your hands, and I will forever hold yours.đŚ đđš

Mother keeper of shadow
Weeping willows bend like maidens in mourning,
their long green hair brushing the strawberry sands.
Pink sugar drifts across the dunes,
sweet as breath against my neck,
sweet as the way grief softens before it breaks.
Children laugh in the far distance.
Balloons rise toward the bruised sky
then fall, one by one,
like prayers too heavy for heaven.
The earth calls us down.
Warm.
Thick.
Alive.
We sink into her waiting body
and she folds us into her shadowed embrace.
Her heat gathers around our skin
until our breaths mingle,
until our longing curls together like vines.
Come to me, my children.
Come to me, my beloved ones.
Her voice is the oldest music I know.
It moves through me like warm smoke,
like fingers tracing the inside of my soul.
She draws us deeper into her womb of soil
and I feel the pulse of her heart under my palms.
I feel her watching me
loving me
remembering me.
You are mine.
You were always mine.
She rises then,
vast and sacred,
a tree of moonlight crowned in sorrow.
Her branches open in blessing.
Her roots drip with ancestral memory.
Her eyes hold centuries.
Do no harm.
Do no harm to the body that holds you.
Do no harm to the Mother who bore you.
Moose walk from the mist like ancient guardians.
Deer bow their crowned heads in reverence.
Snow falls in glittering spirals
touching my shoulders
touching your lips
as if she herself is kissing us through the cold.
The willow cries again.
Her sobs tremble through the ground
and I kneel at her roots, whispering,
Mother, why do you weep?
Because the land remembers love you have forgotten.
Because my body has been wounded.
Because my children turned from me
and I have been alone for too long.
Because I carried them
and they never learned to carry me.
Her grief pours into me
a hot red ache blooming behind my ribs.
I press my forehead to her bark
offering my breath
my blood
my vow.
I am yours.
I will remember.
I will return to you.
But the sky splits open.
Firestorms rise.
Voices wail.
The world shakes itself apart.
The sand beneath me opens like a mouth.
I reach for you
but the earth pulls me down
into her dark heart
where only the warmth of her love
and the memory of your hands
still burn against my skin.

Fear not the moon, though cold her gleam,
She watches softly through the dream.
Not far, not gone forever near,
She whispers truths only shadows hear.
Like the echo of a forgotten prayer,
She dances in the midnight air,
A heartbeat slow, a silent vow,
The stars fall silent and they bow.
I wear the crown of whispered light,
Where roses bloom in endless night.
They sing to me in haunted tone:
âYou are the blood, the seed, the throne.â
Daughter of the silver flame,
The dusk has carved into your name.
Return to us, O child of grace,
Our twilightâs queen, the darkâs embrace.
You are the mirror of the One,
Whose soul is moon, whose heart is sun.
And now Iâm mine, and you are free
Bound in nightâs eternity.
So let the dawn bow low in fright
I am the daughter of the Light.
My Best Friend :Stoner Chick 2000
Yeah. You see us sitting on the bleachers? Yeah, thatâs us. We always sat out there every day around 9:20 in the morning, and weâd skip English class together. Weâd smoke pot, laugh all the time, and just shoot the shit.
She would always laugh. She had this thing about counting. I donât know, she loved the number three. It was her favorite thing. Sheâd sing it sometimes, or sheâd turn it into a rap. She was always being creative with it. Sometimes Iâd think, How the hell does she do that all the time? I just figured it was because she smoked a lot of weed.
We really loved to battle. Sheâd come up with one, then Iâd come up with one. She always had the best ones. Better than me. I used to tell her she should do spoken word.
Sheâd say, âNah, Iâm not that good.â
Itâs funny. When I think about it now, I donât think she really liked herself that much. Her eyes would get so dark, like the light was going out. But then sheâd count to three, and the light would just radiate from her.
For a while, she carried something around with her. I never knew quite what it was, but I knew it was there. So I did everything I could just to spend time with her at 9:20 in the morning.
My best friend.
Stoner Chick 2000.

Her name was Dolly. We met back in 1977. She was my best friend and a real girlâs girl. Whenever we went anywhere, people would stop and stare. She always wore the latest trends and had the hottest boyfriend.
But there was something that didnât make sense. Whenever she was with him, it was like she wasnât really there. Sometimes Iâd catch her looking at a beautiful woman with long hair and striking blue eyes. Iâd think to myself, Why does she look at her like that? Then Iâd shrug it off.
Boy, Dolly. Dolly, Dolly, Dolly.
I could see why men loved her. God damn, she wasnât just a firecracker. She was a bombshell. The way she walked. The way she talked. Everything about her. She was out of this world. She was dynamite. She was sexy.
And somewhere along the way, I fell in love with her.
I donât know when it happened or how. I just know it did. I never found the courage to tell her. I wish I had.
Sometimes, in my wildest dreams, I still see us swimming in the ocean, lying on the beach, or stretched out in the middle of a field of daisies, staring up at the sun. In those dreams, she turns to me, smiles, and says, âGirl, I missed you. Now come over here and give me a kiss.â
But dreams are funny like that.
Itâs been over thirty years.
Still, whenever I see a rainbow, I think of Dolly.
Sheâll always be the rainbow in my world.
My Beautiful Serafina
The year was 1981, the year my daughter was born. She was beautiful, everything I could have ever imagined. She was me. I never knew how beautiful I was until I looked at my daughter, stunning in all her glory, like a light shining down from the heavens.
I held her constantly. I couldnât bear to put her down.
Time passed and she grew. Life happened. Somewhere along the way, she changed. She became fiercely independent. But one thing never changed. She always carried a book.
I think it was Little Women. She used to say Louisa May Alcott was the greatest author who had ever lived. I remember laughing and thinking how strange my daughter was, always falling in love with the most unexpected things.
She would sit in her closet late into the night, reading quietly, convinced none of us knew. But I always knew. I just never said anything. She wasnât hurting anyone. She simply loved to read.
It is now 2006, and my daughter is gone.
I donât know where she went or what happened to her. I like to think she still carries that book. Maybe not the same copy, but another one. I donât know.
And if she still carries that book, I wonder if she ever thinks of me.
My beautiful, sweet Serafina.
How I will always love thee.
I hope you are somewhere, my beautiful child, walking in the warmth of the sun among the turtle doves, reading Louisa May Alcottâs Little Women.

Loc Ness Monster
He was tall, maybe 6â4â, with locs the color of coal, beautiful, coarse, wavy, and neat. Light-skinned, with striking green-blue eyes, he called himself the Loch Ness Monster. I remember laughing about that, but he reminded me of someone, even if I couldnât quite put my finger on it.
Oh, but he was beautiful, like the color of sapphires. He reminded me of an endless summer day: green grass freshly cut, and birds flying like a cardinal or a falcon. He was stunning.
He was an artist who did spoken word. He was so colorful, simple, but so deep, intense, and passionate. He was intentional; I could see that he knew what he wanted, what he loved, and what he liked. He was music, love, and light.
The man that every woman thinks about, but doesnât know how to handle, because heâs a diamond, a sapphire in the depths of the sea. Some people probably wouldnât understand that.
He would have, though.
My beloved sapphire.
The one that got away.
The one I will never forget.
My beautiful, sweet Loch Ness Monster.

She was sexy. She had an ass for days. Lips full. I swear she was a goddess sent out of the heavens. Her name⌠She went by the name Mamusa, but her real name was Sasha. She was gorgeous, man. She was a real fox.
She would braid my hair sometimes while I played the guitar. We would read poetry and go to spoken word. One time I went to her house and she said, âHey, I got an idea.â
I said, âWhat?â
She took off her panties, handed them to me, and said, âPaint me, baby.â
She handed me the easel, the paintbrushes, and all the paints. We stayed up all night. I painted her for hours. Then we ended up on the floor together, smoking our weed, high off shrooms.
I turned to her and said, âBaby, there ainât nobody like you. I swear I think my soulâs known you my whole life.â
She kissed me, caressed my face, and said, âThere will never be another like you. Youâre my Pharaoh, my loving true. Weâll be together in every lifetime, for we are a we. Together forever, always we shall be.â
That was 1978.
She was the girl of my dreams. And I know wherever she may be, sheâs sipping on some wine, looking over the ocean and the sea.
I miss her.
My beautiful Sasha.
I miss her.
