the knocking (#knockwatch). he’s regularly shown knocking on things three times PRIOR to persephone teaching him to read. this is obviously foreshadowing his pre existing psychic ability, but it is a repetitive and useless behavior he Only does when he’s upset or making a decision, so: compulsion
he is rigidly moral & very black and white when it comes to his own truth & responsibility (“in matters of money, he was quick to assign credit or blame”, etc) in the first few books (this later changes when he learns that lies can/do benefit him)
constantly over analyzes his own behavior and his own responses, to the point he convinces himself there is something wrong/immoral/other about his reactions to things (thinking they should kill opal & then regretting it, “too much monster blood”, etc)
at least twice we see him obsessively washing his hands to remove dirt that isn’t there, he compulsively picks at or thinks about others noticing flaws in his clothing or appearance
the gansey murder tree dream
staunchly independent and strict about his own moral code/life choices to the point of neuroticism (the whole “on adam parrish’s own terms or not at all” bit, ronan observing adam thinks the only right way to do something is the way that “causes pain”) despite the fact this causes hardship and tension in his life and relationships he literally cannot accept doing something any way other than the way he’s decided he’s going to do it
feels like he can’t trust his eyes or his mind, second guesses the way he observes things as if there is something flawed about his worldview/vision. multiple times in the text he punishes himself for his intrusive thoughts
pursuant to the above point, he excessively lingers in regret, engages in doom spirals and traps himself in damaging cycles of negative self talk/thought
expects the truth & good behavior from other people, to the point he entirely dismisses or actively despises people who do not adhere to those rules (kavinsky, etc)
the most telling one to me is “i am such a damaged thing.” where he observes that everything “inside his head” is “tangled” but like (gestures broadly) open any of his pov chapters and luxuriate in the horrors
