8/100 days of productivity. 08/10/16
Still chugging a long. Having to re-learn some basic statistics and feeling daunted. It’s probably best to pad out your whole report and then go back at a later stage to fill in little bits such as whether you need S.E. and how to report stuff....is this too much personal info for a public blog?
7/100 days of productivity. 06/10/16
I can’t believe how much I’ve fallen off the TUMBLR studyblr, in fact it’s been a month since my last day-of-productivity-post. Well, a lot of busy things outside of studying have happenned in life during the past month. Really great things, thank the lord. Here are 3 tips my sister gave me for returning to university... 1. Treat it like a 9-5 job. Have your evenings and weekends off. 2. Give yourself 25 holiday days. Allocate those for friends and family. 3. Enjoy! You’re one of the luckiest people in the world right now to be studying for a degree. Not many people get this opportunity in life, so please enjoy it.
Earth Sci: How to estimate land cover!
I came across a problem, where I was given a photo of an island and asked to estimate how much land was taken up by forests.
Here's two methods to estimate the land cover of forests in a photo.
Let's say you are given a photo, which is 1KM by 1KM (That means each side is 1000 meters long. That's about 10 mins walking time)
The green is forest and white is bare land.
Method 1: Guesstimate
A simple and quick method would be to look at the photo and have a guess. Is it more than half or less? I would say it's 2/3 parts forest.
2/3 of 1km²= 0.66km²
Method 2: Grid
A more accurate method is create a grid, by splitting rhe image up into smaller squares.
I've gone for squares which are 100m x 100m or 0.1km x 0.1km.
Simply count up how many squares are green, then times by the area of 1 square
Area of 1 square = 0.01km²
Number of squares = 64
Area of forested land = 64 squares x 0.01km2² = 0.64 km²
6/100 days of productivity. 08/09/16
Oi tudo bem! Last night I managed to make a great step forward in my work and cleaned it up this morning. Now to finish off 2 hours of maths, then off to sort out my flat for university and visit my girlfriend >:o yosh!
Day5/100. 7/9/15 Shouldn't of ate a saerkraut salad on my desk. Been busyish day, getting use to being out of the house again. Must study some! Remember this is a pleasure, have fun making maps and showing off your skills! Even if your chest feels tight
Day 4/100. 6/09/16
Studied for dissertation and did NASA marh problem. Only managed one problem but I got it right!
What I learnt is how to convert between units…like so
Let’s say youneed convert something in ‘a units’ to something in ‘c units’. Always put the the old unit you’re cancelling out as the denominator
A units * b units/a units * c units/ b units = c units…
For example….
Convert hours into seconds!
12 hours * 60 minutes / 1 hour * 60 seconds / 1 min = 43,200 seconds
Convert 'gigatons per billion people per year’ into 'tons per person per year’
4 gigatons / 6 bn people = 7.10^ -10 / person. gt/bn to t/p
simply divided 4 by 6,000,000,000
10^-10 * 1,000,000,000 t / 1 gigaton = 7.10^-1 ton = 0.7 ton
there are a billion tons in a gigaton.
Day 3/100. 2/9/16. Returning fears Getting ready to study maths after dinner while my parents watch TV. My maths has always been bad and makes me struggle with my science degree. It's time to prove to the world I can do maths!
