EmmLich x Rook - Corpse Bride AU

I am very much aware that I have unhealthy commitment issues when it comes to finishing fics but when the overwhelming urge to throw Emmrich and Sable into another AU… well…

After watching the Corpse Bride movie for the 10,000th time, I am now haunted with the idea of finally writing the unhinged EmmLich fic I’ve always wanted to. This is still little more than bare bones (hah…) and notes at the moment but I figure if I throw it out into the ether then I’ll have to actually commit to writing it.

Rough synopsis I’m running with so far:

She was of little importance. Abandoned as a babe in the gardens of The Necropolis, home to the Mourn Watch, she is given the name Ingellvar and raised without any expectation of achieving greatness.

Under the watchful gaze of her so-called guardians, she lives a quiet life, content to be ignored as she spends her time in the gardens with little more than plants and wisps as company.

Then on the eve of her 30th birthday it is decided that she will be married, the burden that is her shadowed existence removed from the hallowed halls that have been the only home she has ever known.

Betrayed by those who had raised her and in the face of a marriage that threatens her quiet peace, she flees into the depths of the Necropolis - wishing to be forgotten by all as she frees herself from the mockery of a wedding gown, she cries out to the fade-touched shadows that she will not be forced into a sham of a marriage whilst she still lives.

She vows that she would rather wed herself to the long-forgotten bones that call this place home, than play their little games anymore.

His awakening and acceptance of her vow is… unexpected.

....I just really love this dialogue and I laugh a lot at how Hawke gets irritated by Varric's writing.

This is the piece I did for Unexpected SplendAUr: An Emmrich Volkarin Zine, along with so many incredibly talented people over on @thefadediscordserver !!! It's a collection of fan-produced art and writing dedicated specifically to imagining our favorite sensitive necromancer Emmrich Volkarin in alternate universes! Please, please, PLEASE do yourself a favor and go check it out!

(personal recommendation is the East/West Berlin Wall fic, it absolutely devastated me emotionally and now I need even more therapy! 🥳)

My contribution:

It's a modern ghost hunter AU! More specifically, it's a BuzzFeed Unsolved AU 😂 except they already know ghosts and demons are in fact real, it's just a matter of getting them to communicate. It's honestly more spirit therapy+history lesson than ghost hunt.

Stuff I didn't get to show because time/energy limits:

Rook/Atash Laidir is a PhD student in Archaeology, specifically in Hazardous Supernatural Artifact and Entity Retrieval. In her off hours, though, she's an urban explorer YouTuber/TikToker who shares her journeys exploring abandoned/condemned/haunted places.

Emmrich is a newly arrived guest professor from the Grand Necropolis, teaching and researching the Necromantic Arts. Rook immediately snags him as a guest on her YouTube channel, and he's so popular with the audience that he keeps coming back until he's a full-on co-host.

In this episode, Emmrich's not impressed with this particular spirit's grammar.

Rook is too distracted by Emmrich's hand touching hers to notice.

The audience is absolutely giddy. Half of them aren't even there for the ghosts.

I actually drew reference directly from the BU episode about the Goatman Bridge. If I'd had more time/energy I would have gone all in with a comic, complete with the dialogue text crawl and the (wheeze).

(I was a huge fan as a baby undergrad, can you tell)

Anyway, GO CHECK OUT THE ZINE!!! So many incredibly gifted people making art and stories in one place, it's been such an amazing experience getting to see it all. 💚💚💚 I love this place so much.
