soe ker tie house | tyin tegnestue | noh bo, tak, thailand
here is another inspiring and creative project by tyin tegnestue in thailand; it is dubbed locally soe ker tie hias (the butterfly houses) because of their unique appearance. the houses, built by combining local materials and skills with modern innovative techniques, provides orphaned refugees a home to live in and a neighborhood to play in.

old market library | tyin tegnestue | bangkok, thailand
i love it when good design goes beyond creating beautiful spaces. that's why i got giddy when i saw this humble yet awe-inspiring humanitarian project by tyin tegnestue in a depressed area in min buri, bangkok. through collaboration with the local community and the use of local resources, what used to be a 100-year old abandoned market was brilliantly transformed into a calm and intimate library.
image above: the main room of the library featuring colored box shelves for books and a quiet reading area.
image above: the study room beyond the main room. notice the squat toilet on the right that has found a fresh new life as a planter.
image above: the backyard, with new plantings of jasmine and climbing plants, protected from the hot sun by a pergola.
image above: the high ceiling of the building affords a loft that provides another area for cozy reading
