yes, he knows it. he knows it by heart, how could he not. but the memories are not keen on pleasing a fool's feelings.
the mind is a fragile thing, recalled memories are always just a tad bit different, a small thing changes here and there. and yes, after all these years merlin simply forgets, all those little flaws kept adding up and now he doesn't know. the image of arthur face he now recalls is warped, uncanny, foreign. like he never even held arthur's face in his hands, like he didn't watch it go lifeless there, the color draining from his cheeks with the last breath of air being forced out of his lungs mercilessly. like arthur's a stranger he just so happened to pass by once in his life.
this terrifies him, he refuses to warp the last remaining bits of arthur's face he has even more by trying to remember. he occupies himself, doesn't let himself think, even just for a moment. he can't let him go, he just can't. the thought of having nothing left of arthur haunts him, it's so unbearable he can't even register it as being a possibility.
yet, it is. he curses his human nature, because forgetting is such a human thing to do.
