One With The Sun — Albert Frank Moritz

Child one with the sun in trackless fields of yellow grass and thistle, scent of humid heavy air and the wing music of bees and flies. Child, slender nakedness to itself unknown, true colour of the light dispersed invisibly or glowing around the black hulls of distant thunderheads, around the grasshopper’s countenance, solemn, vigilant and wise. Green apples, poured full of density, of crispness, float unmoved under leaves on the slope. Brown fallen apples nest in secret whorls of grass. The apple tree: alone in so much space. And below in the woods by the water a sweet dead branch cracks lightly in the shadow in the wind. But here is an old track through the grass head-high to a child: who made it? They must have passed and passed by this one tree, by the abandoned, tireless car where rabbits peer out, and the circle of black embers, cans, springs, skeletons of furniture. They too passed here many times on their way from the street’s end to the oaks that screen the river. There the sun is nesting now, night rises with pale flutterings of white wings from roots of plants and the black water.

Why James Potter is the human embodiment of Summer; a non-exhaustive list.

• James Potter is the dreary days of Spring melding into the warm, free days of Summer.

• James is the break from school; the rest and vacation between busy-seasons.

• He is the days spent outside, the frozen-pops mum brought home for the hot, sunny days, running towards the shady spots under bridges and full trees.

• James is the big, near-ancient tree that you climb to read your favourite book or take a rest.

• James is the humid and rainy weather that makes for the perfect stay-in day, the ones where you video chat your friends and watch movies for hours.

• James Potter is the rolling hills that line the apple orchard, like the one where he first kissed Lily.

• He's like the cool breeze that tells you the Autumn months are approaching, he’s the unfolding of a tent and the roasting of s'mores as the camping weather sets in.

• James is the waves crashing on the warm, sandy beaches and the smell of surfboard wax as you walk the edge of the water.

• James is the earth-covered gingham picnic cloth decorated with flowers and desserts of all sorts, the laughter of four square and capture the flag in the field.

• James is the long car rides and playlists through the aux cord on an otherwise boring day, he's the adventure-filled spirit that leads you to find new spots and explore new places.

• He is the intense shouting during game nights, the competitive spirit that fights to win, because "damn it, Sirius, you landed on MY property, you HAVE to pay me!"

• James Potter is Summer: the late nights, the car rides, the warm weather, the sun, the shade, the days off, the mornings spent outdoors and the afternoons spent with friends, the poetry written in old beaten journals, the doggeard pages of your favourite novel, the smell of sunscreen and bugspray, sleeping in until 11am, brunches with family, the notches added to the bucket list, and doing all the things you do in Summer, that is James Potter.

Sirius: As in the mini version of regular cupcakes, which is already a mini version of cake? 

Sirius: Honestly, where does it stop with you people?!

Hogwarts Houses at Christmas!!

Gryffindor:

• Gryffindors decorate EVERYTHING. If an object has surface area you bet your bottom dollar it has decorations on it. 

• Not only do they decorate everything, but the decorations start the MOMENT of November first. McGonagall rolls her eyes but she secretly loves it.

• All of them (and I mean all of them) wear tacky sweaters... it’s a competition, and the other houses judge which one is the worst. Fred and George won two years in a row. 

• Snow. ball. fights. So many of them. It’s a never-ceasing snowball fight with the Gryffindors. 

• They are CONSTANTLY singing Christmas Carols, they never shut up

• Gryffindor has an Annual Christmas Prank War with the Slytherins, Professor Sprout and Professor Filch judge to see who wins.

• Funny gifts > all other gifts; They like making their friends laugh and it’s always a fun time

Slytherin:

• Slytherins throw the most elegant parties, and everyone looks forward to them. (The after-party is always at Gryffindor)

• They have a book exchange with the Ravenclaws, it goes on for hours every year. 

• Ice skating competitions on the Great Lake... judged by none other than Dumbledore himself. 

• Expensive, well thought-out gifts > sentimental gifts; They like treating their friends, but definitely scratch off price tags so that it remains authentic.

• They have the prettiest aesthetic at Christmas, all of the Slytherins work hard into keeping their common room look like a magazine cover during the holidays 

• During the Gryffindor/Slytherin Annual Christmas Prank War, the best prank pulled by the Slytherins (thus far) was when they all dressed up in Gryffindor colours and casually lounged in the Gryffindor common room for a full day. The Gryffindors were completely bewildered (but also excited to have guests). 

Hufflepuff: 

• Hufflepuffs are obsessive bakers and make the BEST cookies, hands down. One year they held a business selling them until it was banned, but boy were the Puffs rich that year. 

• They build an army of snowmen in the snow every year and enchant them to march on the Gryffindors. (The Gryffindors just take them on as new snowball targets)

• Sentimental gifts > expensive gifts; they love making homemade presents and will spend hours perfecting them 

• Hosting gingerbread building competitions in their common room, and they wins every year  

• THEY KNIT CHRISTMAS SWEATERS FOR EVERYONE AND NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE 

• Getting in the middle of the Gryff/Sly prank war and framing one of the other houses every single year. No one ever suspects them. 

• The Hufflepuffs practice for months to go Chirstmas caroling for the other houses and the staff, and each house has a dance party while they sing. It’s tradition. 

Ravenclaw: 

• Ravenclaws spend 99% of their time hanging out with the other houses over Christmas break. Gryffindor’s games, Hufflepuffs baking, Slytherin’s parties, whatever it is, there are always a handful of Ravenclaws there. 

• However, they do host a Christmas Talent Show and a board game night, both of which turn into absolute riots over the competitiveness of the Ravenclaws. They all love it though. 

• Practical gifts > all other gifts; The Ravenclaws loving seeing someone be able to use their gift!

• Did they have a ‘Who can build the best and most structurally sound igloo’ competition one year? Yes. Did it turn into tradition? Yes. Do the Gryffindors get dared to spend a night in the winning igloo? Yes. Do they do it? Absolutely.

•  They cook “international desserts” and bring them to the feast, everyone looks forward to trying a different country's dessert! 

• Ravenclaws charming these huge snow hills for everyone to sled down, complete with ramps and detours and two-lane hills for races

Pre-founder’s-death sorting methods headcanons:

Part two!!

• Rowena Ravenclaw repeatedly slapping Godric Gryffindor after he referred to someone sorted into Ravenclaw as a “ball-less nerd” after losing an argument over the sorting of poor Sarah Conner. 

• Salazar Slytherin finding this incident incredibly funny but mentally noting NEVER to use the words ‘nerd’ or ‘ball-less’ around Ravenclaw. 

• Hegla Hufflepuff popping popcorn before sorting each year because quite frankly, it’s hilarious. 

• Hogwarts gaining a transfer student in the middle of the year and Hufflepuff immediately sorting them into her house because God forbid you scare the students with a classic Slytherin-Ravenclaw sorting battle during midterms. 

• Every now and then when there’s a well-rounded student the founders threw darts to sort them.

• One time a student discreetly told Ravenclaw that they wanted to be in her house to appease their parents and Ravenclaw asked where they wanted to be. They ended up in Gryffindor.

• Gryffindor presenting the idea that he should get a part-time Gryffindor student because every other house had one more student than his did.

• All four founders bringing their quidditch cups and house cups to sortings to entice the new students.

• Students interfering with the sorting process to get their friends and siblings into their house

• “JACOB IF YOU DON’T WEAR THE HARPIES SHIRT UNDER YOUR ROBES PROFESSOR SLYTHERIN WILL NEVER CHOOSE YOU!” ~ Forth year Slytherin
