No matter the year the American costume never fails to be too ridiculous. And being fair, the Cuban outfit is 100% traditional to the point that I saw the dude no text and knew he was from my country.

Note About Actors

I’ve noticed something about actors lately. There’s a huge culture of touch in theatre. Heck, it’s part of our jobs. Actors fall asleep in piles backstage, do each others’ hair and makeup, have their hands all over each other when they’re helping one another stretch, do trust exercises based on touch for team-building or for fun, etc, etc.

And yet.

A lot of actors seem really touch-starved. Like, there’s never enough human contact for a lot of us. I know it’s something that I experience, but it’s a vibe that I pick up a lot, especially from young actors (teens to twenties). It could have something to do with how normalized touch in theatre is (thank god, because American culture doesn’t normalize it anywhere else literally ever), or it could be something about the type that tends to like acting also being the type that tends to need Lots of Hugs.

Types of Theatre People

Or, 

Theatrical Folk, a Romanticization

The Determined Romantic. Finds wonder in everything, adamantly refuses to badmouth any other theatre people or any of their previous work. Sees the good in broken people, small roles, and long rehearsals. Loves to write opening night cards, cries into their closing night cards. Prides themselves on wearing out dance shoes. Made of bright lipstick, jazz hands, and paper-wrapped bouquets.

The Intellectual. Approaches every situation as an opportunity to learn. Fills their scripts to the brim with notes. Never late, never bored, never disengaged. Analyzes text and pieces theories together about the characters. Either reads every review and takes notes or refuses to look at all until the show closes. Prone to being genuinely dashing. Made of leather-bound journals, elegant wristwatches, and beautifully-timed cheek kisses.

The Hothead. Never out of energy, never one to back down from a challenge. Belts loud and long and takes “project” as a challenge. Always laughing. The most likely to wear out costume pieces and props. Either the first one or the last one off-book, no exceptions. Uses the word “love” easily and knows it. Dances absently. Made of melting ice cream, sparklers, and over-involved games of poker.

The Old Soul. Always seems a little bit sad deep down. Probably not a dancer, but breaks hearts onstage and off. Knows more Shakespeare than anyone would guess. Well-read. Never knows when to stop overworking themselves. Genuinely enjoys late-night rehearsals. Full of antiquated knowledge. Made of rotary phones, unopened mail, and lingering hugs, where no one wants to be the first to let go.

A bunny has recently made it inside of the Pentagon’s inner courtyard- arguably one of the most secure locations on the planet, surrounded on all sides by over 100 yards of highly-guarded office building and sitting on top of at least two stories of concrete basements.
