Tonight begins Tisha BāAv the saddest day on the Jewish calendar.
Both Temples in Jerusalem were destroyed on this same date, centuries apart. Tonight we fast. We sit low. We read the book of Lamentations often by candlelight the way mourners do.
A few weeks ago I wrote about entering the month of Av, and how this month holds our heaviest memories while carrying a name that means Father. Tonight is that lowest point. The bottom of the descent.
But here is what I keep coming back to. Just six days from now comes Tu BāAv, one of the most joyful days on our calendar. The same month that holds our deepest grief also holds our greatest celebration of love. Not instead of the sorrow. After it. Through it.
That is the shape of Jewish memory, and honestly, the shape of most human lives. We do not skip the mourning. We sit in it fully, we name what was lost, and then we rise. Every single time, for thousands of years, we have risen.
So tonight I sit with the weight of it. And I know what is coming after.

At one of the first Chabad Shabbat dinners I went to on campus, I got to talking with a group of women at the end of the table with me, and one of them saidĀ āI was raised Orthodox, but Iām gayā and I felt like a weight had been lifted from my chest. In that moment I felt like I really did belong in that room and didnāt have to police what I said around who. And I didnāt have the guts to say thank you then, so Iām gonna say it anonymously online, as one does. So hereās to some more unashamed Jewish women proudly writing about their gay lives.
A lot of these short stories revolved around family, one from the perspective of a lesbian coupleās child, many about tense relations after coming out, and some tales of the strong Jewish women of the family. And of course, many revolve around lesbiansā participation in Jewish culture. Some feel disconnected from their identity and are making an active choice to seek out the religion of their birth. Most were raised Jewish, and love their connection to thousands of years of history and culture. Itās just so nice to read stories that reference Jewish holidays and customs while women talk to their lovers, or speak of their love of Jewish women, or just their reaction to the goyim of the world.
jewish lesbians have been so foundational to queer literature and culture, but the overton window has shifted to the point where mentioning judaism causes suspicion that becomes indictment if we do not behave as expected.

Huh. I thought it was a Haredi thing. In all the Haredi comics I have at home depicting the Avot or Neviāim, their faces are deliberately obscured. At least in books specifically by David Bikhman, so maybe it's specifically a thing with him?
I wasn't taught that, but you notice when your books do some weird things.
semi-related fun fact, i have aphantastia so i can only really visually conceptualise things that i can come up with a description for (because i dont actually visualise anything but if you told me what something looks like i could draw it based on that visual information). i did not realise as a child but i knew you're not supposed to draw g-d so i thought He was so powerful my mind was getting blocked from being able to imagine what He looked like lol. as if "we dont know what g-d looks like" was a "you cant travel faster than light" rule

There is a set of 12 jars of Lebanese wild cucumber pickles in the breakroom at work and Im pretty sure Im the only person eating them but Ive been slowly whittling away at them. It is my solution to the fresh vegtable crisis. Its about as perfect a solution as you can get: theyre pickled, so no parasite is surviving, theyre from Lebanon, which is really far away from whatever potential source the parasite has, and pickles are expensive and im getting a large quanitiy for free!
Taking a culture class at shul and today coming out of it like yeah I'm about to be 10x more Jewish now
