call me terminally academia-brained but i do think a lot of the fun of character analysis is figuring out how to build a compelling argument for a particular reading using lines of evidence from canon as well as meta/intertextual support
and you could say that what i’m saying here is basically “a lot of the fun of doing character analysis is doing character analysis” but let’s be real a lot of fandom character analysis is pretty heavily vibes-based. and i think that’s where i really chafe up against the traditional thought-terminating fandom attitude of like, everyone’s opinions hold equal weight and any interrogation of that is inherently hostile. because i think it’s fascinating to dig into where others are coming from in terms of their views on characters or dynamics or whatever, especially when they differ significantly from more commonly expressed views, and part of that digging is asking people okay what parts of canon are you drawing from to support your opinion? what parts of canon are you disregarding or downplaying? how does this argument hold up in the light of how race, gender, class, ability, etc. operate both in the piece’s in-fiction and real world contexts?
the thing they dont tell you about learning to "trust the process" is that you forget and relearn it every single time you make a new piece of art. unfortunately there is no cure either
culturally christian americans in culturally christian america on their way to act like a culturally jewish state is an "ethnostate" and the worst thing to possibly happen ever
periodic reminder that the “ethnostate” accusation was popularized by neo-Nazi Richard Spencer, who used it alongside rhetoric about queer safe spaces to make the disingenuous claim that what White Nationalists want isn’t all that different from what Jews and queer people already have.
it’s the hackneyed “we’re not so different, you and I” villain speech shit. it is a lie, and he knows it’s a lie.
think about it: why would a Nazi, who sees Jews (and thus any state with Jews in its government) as inherently evil & inferior, compare himself to us? he clearly doesn’t believe the comparison, and he knows no one who genuinely thinks Jews, other BIPoC, and queer people deserve safety will agree Nazism is good. so why would he say it? because he knows, by telling that lie, he can get people who already think he is bad to treat any organized structure intended to ensure safety & self-governance for minorities in the same light.
don’t prove him right. don’t do Richard Spencer’s dirty work for him. if you cannot do that for the sake of Jews, then do it for no other reason than this:
it will not end with Israel.
the same tortured logic Spencer used to play upon your ignorance to equate Israel with his vision for a White ethnostate is the same tortured logic he used to compare his White ethnostate to safe spaces for queer people & PoC, in literally the very same breath. by carrying forward his claims about Israel, you are establishing precedence that will be used—is already being used—to destroy DEI, safe spaces, etc. for other marginalized people.
if you are queer or a person of color, and you are tempted to treat Spencer’s rhetoric like anything but what it is—a lie—understand, you are just fanning a flame that will burn you too. we are stronger together. do not fall for Nazi attempts to divide & conquer.
i’m a drunk, lord. i’m a liar. i am a thief, lord. i profit off the miseries of other men, and i do it easy. drugs, liquor, women. i-i-i lure them in and grab what they got, lord. i take daughters with no homes and i-i put em out on the street, lord, and i lie to myself saying i-i’m giving em roof and food and dollar bills in they pocket, but i look in the mirror, i know what i am. the big man in the big house, stuffin cotton in my ear so i can't hear their cries. and, lord, i dragged my family into this mess with me. I SHAME MY FATHER. i failed my brother. i lost my mother and sister, and rather than fix it like a man should, lord, i run like a coward. i run to the bottle. i run to the grift. i run to bad beds. i laid down with a man. i laid down with the devil. and he has ROOTS in me. all his SPINDLY ROOTS in me. AND I CAN'T THINK NOTHING ANYMORE BUT HIS VOICE AND HIS WORDS!! please. HELP MEEE! I AM WEAK!!! i wanna die.
Sources say the incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

There was a frightening disruption during Shabbat services at a prominent Manhattan synagogue Friday.
There was a frightening disruption during Shabbat services at a prominent Manhattan synagogue Friday.
It all unfolded just after 6 p.m. as the service was getting started inside Central Synagogue, located on Lexington Avenue near East 55th Street.
A live stream of the service captured the panic as a man is seen shouting while a security guard attempts to restrain and remove him from the building.
"He was screaming and yelling. I heard a loud pop ... We thought it was a gun and people were a little shaken, but the security people were right on it," said Susan Roane, who was attending the service.
"When I saw he wasn't armed, I mean, he was just ranting and raving and yelling. It looked like a maniac. But I wanted to go under cover. I mean, I thought, who the hell knows what he's gonna do?" congregant Arlynn Greenbaum said.
Roane and Greenbaum said they couldn't make out what specifically the man was saying.
"He was very full of hate," Greenbaum said.
According to police, the 46-year-old man was acting irate and struck a 63-year-old woman as he was being escorted out by a security guard. Police say he also spit at and headbutted a member of the security team and damaged synagogue property.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch says an NYPD sergeant working a paid detail at the synagogue stepped in and took the man into custody.
Police say the 63-year-old woman suffered a small laceration to her lip and her right forearm was hurt.
Services continued after the man was taken into custody.
"I understand the sanctity of this space and its meaning for congregants. Central Synagogue is where I grew up. In joy and in sorrow, it has always been a place of comfort and peace. What happened there tonight is deeply painful. A place of worship should never be a crime scene," Tisch said in a statement, in part.
"I am horrified by the assault at Central Synagogue during services today. I can only imagine the pain and fear an attack like this, during Shabbat services, causes for the congregation and for Jewish New Yorkers across our city. Every New Yorker must be able to observe their religion without fear of violence. This despicable act has no place in our city, and our administration will do everything in our power to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe. The alleged perpetrator is in custody and there is no known ongoing threat in or around the synagogue. We are in close contact with the NYPD and will share more information as it becomes available," Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote in a post on X.
Police say there no known known additional threats at this time, and additional NYPD resources have been deployed to the synagogue as a precaution.
hindu bad driver: yes I totally cut them off but have you considered the possibility that they were a douchebag in a past life so they deserve it?
buddhist bad driver: stop getting mad you are too attached to material things (your car that I rear ended)
jewish bad driver: according to this highly controversial interpretation of the melachot which five separate rabbis have told me is completely stupid, driving during Shabbat is fine as long as you ask your non jewish neighbor to turn the car on because then the engine is already on. However, using turn signals is prohibited and you can't turn headlights on or off which is why I just leave my high-beams on at all times
muslim bad driver: muslims are never required to yield the right of way to non muslims
neopagan bad driver: if we follow the teachings of the Great Earth Mother, traffic is like a flowing river. Turbulence and disorder are part of nature. "Lanes" are a product of a Christian society obsessed with rigid status and social control. You gotta just go with the flow, man. (jerks wheel and sends 2004 Subaru Outback with COEXIST bumper sticker and Etsy Dreamcatcher hanging from the rear view mirror careening across 3 lanes of traffic to make an exit)
satanist bad driver: much as great Lucifer defied god's oppressive vision of rigid order and obedience, I am treating this "stop" sign as a suggestion
pastafarian bad driver: this interchange is a sacred place. the convoluted mess of twisted, tangled ramps reflects the form of His divine noodley appendages. When I enter it I must meditate on the interchange and lose all awareness of surrounding cars.
amish bad driver: I don't need to pay attention to the road, my horses know the way home (is currently in the oncoming lane and has just run over a toddler because a leaf fell 200 yards away and spooked the horses)
cthulhu cultist bad driver: human "traffic laws" are insignificant and meaningless in the face of a bleak and uncaring universe. Ia, ia, Cthulhu fhtagn!
men will do literally anything other than engaging in pro-social community-oriented behavior and then get online and complain about how masculinity is vilified and men aren't allowed to be heroes anymore
"all men really want is to feel like the hero" okay then volunteer at a food bank. get narcan training. step in when a woman is being harassed on the street. help out an elderly neighbor with shopping or home repairs. learn how to safely de-escalate fights. help your friends move. join or start your workplace union. become a big brother or volunteer coach for kids' sports. clean up your local park or get involved in some local conservation campaign. do your own damn dishes. notice what needs to be done and then do it. the world doesn't need heroes, it needs helpers. there are literally so many paths to finding a sense of self-respect and worth through pro-social behaviors that improve your immediate local community and help build your network of close personal connections. but these guys don't give a shit about actually contributing anything to the world. they just want to whine and fantasize.
their inherent lack of self-respect is belied not only by the fact that they can't imagine doing anything that contributes to building a better, more resilient society, but how they can't imagine that doing so might involve a lot of small acts and choices and not one big act of heroism that gets them on the news as Big Man Of The Year.
I think that part of what irks me about AI being used even for "small" stuff like meme graphics (aside from all the larger problems obviously) is like.... the time spent on it was part of the humor. "this is a silly inconsequential joke but I had to stop everything and spend 5 minutes making it" was, at least for me, part of the joke. Someone really took time out of their day to make me look at something silly they took time out of their day to make. Now it's like someone took time out of my day to make me look at something no one even made. Stop wasting my time if you aren't wasting yours too.
Some time ago (I think in 2021) I had to go see a neurologist over really scary symptoms that resembled seizures. I was a nervous wreck about what I was feeling and had barely slept all week, which seemed to be apparent to the doc’s assistant when I sat down in the exam room for questioning or whatever. Dude was pretty young and soft spoken, around my age. He was laser focused doing something on one of those tablet-laptop Surface things as I spoke, presumably writing down my symptoms.
Midway through talking about my symptoms my voice audibly started shaking as I was describing them, clearly upset.
In the middle of my monologue he turns the tablet to face me, closes whatever program he has open and the wallpaper is this fucking collage of pictures of lord farquaad from shrek, lovingly decorated. Dude just sat there placidly smiling at me until I noticed and stopped dead in the middle of a sentence. We sat there in silence like this for like a solid minute before I started wheezing laughing. Before I could even say anything else or process it he picked up the tablet and wordlessly left the room, and I just sat there dumbfounded until the doctor showed up. 10/10 doctor experience tbh
I didn’t own a cell phone at the time to get a photo so this rendition from memory is all I can provide you
