“Most people don’t notice them when there’s other things they have to look for,” Nora said, understanding why most didn’t see much of the beauty nature had to offer. She offered him a small smile. “You don’t mean trees do you? You’re talking about the infected?”

“I-- like to notice... the natrual surroundings... Erm, they just... make me happy. Because... there’s not a lot of things to be happy about anymore... And, that’s... well, one of them.” Rory looked at the tree and a faint smile appeared on his lips. “No... I meant-- nature. I... try... the infected don’t scare me.”

“You drop children on the floor accidentally sometimes, dude?” He grinned. “Should I be concerned?”

I don’t need you to teach me how to tie a knot and yeah, sure, if you don’t like the mystery that comes with not knowing whether you’ll die or be the last one standing. Personally I thrive on it.

“I’m rather good at detecting... threats... you’re not... you don’t seem. You don’t seem like a threat.”

Hattie stared at this strange man for a moment, wondering what had possessed her to help him in the first place. Maybe it was because sleep deprivation was something she experience daily, or for reasons unknown. She shrugged at his comment on going to medic. It would have been the best option a few hours ago, but there was no use now. She blinked her eyes for a second at the mention of his name, not comprehending it at first. Not many people offered up names these days. “Hattie – my name’s Hattie.”

Rory got easily stressed. When he did, strange things happened to him. This was part of the reason that he tried to stay away from people on days like this, when he was feeling extra stressed. Except that was not always an option. “Well, thanks for letting me-- erm, stay here. I guess. Um, if there’s anything I can do for you... to thank you... then-- let me know.” I’m useless, but I can try to be helpful, he thought.

“Amen.” Charlie simply stated as she looked at the man who had sat up from the bench. She totally understood what he meant about it being better than the places he’s slept before she hadn’t been big on sleeping either since the whole infection thing started especially when she wasn’t in this town because she had to keep her eye on her little brother Carter. She couldn’t imagine falling asleep and losing him because she slacked off. She nodded her head a bit and sat down next to him. “Of course.” She said softly as she turned her head over to him. “How have you been doing?”

He almost wished he could sleep, but then he knew that he was never going to sleep well with the things that he’d been through. Rory let out a sigh, closing his eyes for a moment before feeling a bit better. He at least didn’t feel tired for once. “I’ve been...” Rory trailed off, not really knowing how he had been feeling. “I’ve... been better before. I’m starting to feel like I’m losing myself bit by bit. I keep having nightmares and I miss my brother.” Rarely did he ever open up to people, but sometimes he just needed to tell people how he was feeling. “I’m reading back on my journal entries and I’m trying to understand who I am and it doesn’t help.”

Hattie didn’t bother looking up from her journal as the man who was currently occupying her couch spoke. She sat in a chair across from him by the window, the late afternoon light shining into the dingy room. “It’s afternoon, specific time I don’t know.” Marking a few more words down, she finally tore her gaze from the tattered pages. “You’re in my shop. You took a pretty nasty fall outside, so a few passerby’s and I carried you in here. You’ve been out for a few hours.”

He sat up, listening to her words and trying to make sense of them. He didn’t remember falling, but his mind was so full, that he didn’t remember much of anything. Rory rubbed his eyes and looked at her. “I suppose I should go see a medic.” The man blinked his eyes. “Well, thanks for letting me use your couch. Erm, I’m Rory,” he told her, wondering if she cared at all.

Charlie stood in front of the bench, looking at the man who was laying on it. She watched him start to wake up and she pressed her lips together. “It’s two-pm and you are sleeping on a bench.” She smirked as she held out a mug full of coffee. “Have you been sleeping well, Rory?”

Sleep never came easily to Rory anymore. It had started when he was younger, even before things went to shit. Sleep just was something Rory didn’t ever do. He always felt if he slept, something bad might happen, to him or his brother and he would feel sorry if it did happen. When the infected entered the picture, sleep was even more difficult. The curly haired man slept when he could, and wherever he could; which sometimes meant he slept in odd places. “Oh, well-- that’s... better than... erm, some of the places I’ve slept.” He sat up, taking the coffee. “Thanks, Charlie,” he muttered.

“Hey there, Rory.” He stopped, not sure where their conversation was going. Nowhere, it seemed like to him. Though most of the time it was just what he preferred. “I think I’ve seen you before. By the wall. You’re a Guard?”

He was struggling to make conversation, but he didn’t mind. At least he was not contemplating something terrible. His mind was tolerable at this point. “Yeah. I’m a guard,” he nodded. “I don’t think I’ve seen you around, but-- I don’t notice people... well.”

One has got to be worse than the other though – mhm, doesn’t help that they loosen as I go, zombies don’t play by any rules so I can’t request a time out to redo them.

They can both be pretty intolerable in the right conditions, though. Yeah, they do that, but there is a knot that I was taught when I was younger that helps with the laces getting tighter. I would say infected can be pretty bad though.

“The trees,” she said softly, almost as to try not to disturb their current peace. “They’re beautiful.” She glanced at him and his notebook, half expect him to be drawing as well. When she found that he was scribbling down some numbers she turned her attention can to the tree. A branch twisted around at an angle she hasn’t seen before and she struggled to get it right on the page. She continued to erase and redo the pencil marks on her page.

Nature was beautiful, even in a time when nature was not always the first thing on a person’s mind. There was something beautiful about their surroundings. Rory looked at the trees, with a small smile on his face. “They are,” Rory said softly, closing his journal with a sick feeling in his stomach. “No one takes the time to look at them. I often wonder about the nature of my surroundings. In more ways than one.”

Rory groaned and opened his eyes, he’d been so tired that he had pretty much collapsed into sleep without realizing where he was. “What time is it?” he asked, looking around. “Where am I?” the man questioned.

Both are sort of terrible when you boil it down. Have you... tried lacing your boots, erm, tighter.

Alyssa looked up as the two the girls walked away, and noticed the man standing close by, who was also looking at them with an expression she didn’t quite know how to describe. ”Feels unreal, doesn’t it?” She nodded at the retreating backs of the girls with a smile on her face, hoping she didn’t interrupt whatever it was that he was thinking about.

He had always wondered if he would have ever met a person that he would want to be with. Rory hadn’t so far. Though he rarely thought about dating anyone. Romance just was not his style. But, still... knowing that people thought about that sort of thing made him happy in a way. Children deserved to be happy. “Sort of. I guess it’s normal. People want normality even in the harshest of times.” The statement was fluid, with no interruptions. “In a world full of unknowns, it’s nice to know normality exists somewhere.” Rory looked down slightly, with a small smile on his face.

“My glasses wouldn’t be on the floor!” Ezra said indignantly. “Are you kidding? They’re like my children. You don’t just leave children on the ground like that.”

“Well then no. I don’t see them. But, um, maybe you had... dropped them on accident. Those happen sometime,” Rory looked down at the ground, avoiding eye contact with the younger man.

While Oliver normally never paid much attention to idle comments, the man’s words struck him as curious. Not many people, even in a world such as theirs, acknowledged the fact that not everyone had grown into certain privileges. “Don’t think I caught your name.”

Rory was nice... or at least he thought so. Maybe a bit awkward, and sometimes he didn’t like what he thought about. But he was nice. He tried his hardest to make himself seem pleasant, which he hoped he was doing now. Except he never knew anymore. It was difficult to tell with some people. “Erm, I’m Rory.”
