The touch made him feel grounded, and Jasper turned his focus to her emotions instead, trusting in her confidence and concern, and taking some relief from that. Hesitantly, he nodded. Heâd also been reserved about the idea of moving, but had been far less vocal about it than Rosalie. That had mainly been for Aliceâs sake though. He hadnât wanted to upset or deter her, especially since sheâd felt so positive about this place. But he also hadnât wanted to voice his reservations, to admit he was struggling and knew he always would be, because for some reason, his family believed in him, even if he didnât. âIâll try to remember.â
Of course, Rose knew of his hesitations, even though heâd barely voiced them. That was just how they were. Despite his feelings, a corner of his mouth turned up at her reply, allowing himself to exhale. âThank you. I appreciate it.â Wanting a distraction to hold him over until tomorrow, he tried for conversation. âHave you found anythinâ to like about this place yet?â
Rosalie nodded at his confirmation. âYou know where I am if you need reminding.â Despite often disagreeing with her family, mainly Edward, that didnât deter her from going to any length to protect or reassure them. She hated this life of immortality, but she couldnât take it out on those who cared for her. After all, they were all she had left, now. They were the closest thing she could get to what sheâd always wanted. Emmett especially. She may not be able to conceive, but at least her heart was satisfied with the perfect husband.
âAnytime,â and she meant that. It was nice to feel understood, when it appeared as if the rest of her siblings were against her. Everyone was so positive about Alexandria, and yet she couldnât find a single drop of comfort in this place. At least Jasper got that, he had his concerns, too. Perhaps they were always destined to play twins, even if they werenât biologically positioned. âNot yet. Youâd be better off asking Emmett, he seems ecstatic.â
âIâm.. not sure,â he answered honestly, voice quiet. He didnât feel alright, but he hadnât done anything wrong yet either, so it couldnât be all bad. At least, thatâs what Alice had encouraged him to think. âI donât wannaâ ruin this for you all. I wonât ruin this,â he corrected himself. âIâve just gottaâ⊠keep my thoughts elsewhere. Away from all that blood. And the hunger.â
The thought darkened his eyes, but he pulled himself away fast, finally breaking his stare to glance over at his sister. Jasper cleared his throat, ashamed. â'Spose I should get outtaâ town for a few days. It seems I need a hunt. Will you come with me, Rose?â He didnât want to take away her opportunity to settle in, but he didnât trust himself to be alone like this, and he couldnât let Alice see him lose control again. He didnât want to fail her.
âAlright.â Rosalie closed the space between them, a gentle hand resting on the top of Jasperâs arm, trying to keep his attention on her whilst they discussed his hunger. The last thing they needed was a vampire accident, considering they were planning to stay here now. It wouldnât make for the best first impression. âYou wonât be ruining anything, remember that. It wasnât our choice to move here.â Rosalie had actively fought against it, despite Emmettâs enthusiasm. She much preferred it back home.
âOf course I will. Pack an overnight back and weâll head out in the morning.â She was beginning to feel that familiar hollow craving herself, so the trip would be beneficial for both of them.
Dean scoffed. âWeâre on the same page about the Mikaelsons, although juryâs regrouped for one.â Kol still confused the hell out of him, but he held hope the vampire was behaving better these days, if not for Finnick's sake. âAnd Katherine Pierce, if youâve ever had the pleasure. Total she-demon. Still makinâ my mind up about the ones that run this joint, but I guess time will reveal all true colours, or whatever.â He shrugged.
âSo, youâre obviously part of the new family in town, then. Cullens, was it? Youâre tellinâ me none of you bat for team human?â Dean narrowed his eyes as he processed the idea, struggling to believe it. She had plenty of reasons to lie; protection, self-preservation, lulling him into a false sense of security. âWell, feels like somethinâ Iâd need to see to believe, butâŠâ He trailed off, pouting in thought for a moment. âHow about I make you a deal, blondie? If you go out sometime soon and chat to some of those wolves, have an honest conversation, Iâll also take you at your word. And trust me, darlinâ, no point in tryinâ to lie to me about it later, âcause Iâm a Winchester. Iâve been a hunter for as long as I could breathe air.â
Her reaction had been unexpected, Dean unsure what to make of it. Sam was the one who usually dealt with emotions; and despite how much time theyâd spent together, heâd had never been able to read others as well as his little brother. Heâd decided she wasnât being sarcastic, though. No, sheâd certainly meant it. Bitter, maybe? âSo, why donât you?â He asked, now curious about the comment.
âI presume you mean Rebekah?â Rosalie hadnât spent much time interacting with the Mikaelson family, but sheâd drawn her conclusion fairly quickly. None of them were agreeable, but at least she shared an understanding with the sister. They both wanted a human life, and only stuck with their covens out of familial loyalty and love. In another life, perhaps they couldâve been friends. âI canât say Iâve ever met Katherine, but I suspect her reputation proceeds her. As for Amelie and the LothbroksâŠâ Rosalie trailed off, preparing herself for the lie. âTheyâre fine. Theyâre friends of my father, and have been gracious enough to let us reside here. But they donât take too kindly to those who cross them, so I wouldnât recommend it.â
âNone of us. Carlisle doesnât believe in taking innocent life to satisfy our hunger, and neither do I. Itâs ghastly.â Of course, her siblings struggled with control more than she did, especially Edward and Jasper, but at least they were attempting to hold onto their morals. It was more than she could say for the other vampires sheâd met in her time. âWe all survive on animal blood. Iâm sure youâll come to believe that in time. Although youâd be given reason to believe otherwise, considering who our neighbours are. I suspect blame will be misdirected, when residents start turning up dead,â Rosalie huffed, already irritated at the idea. Deanâs next sentence triggered her intrigue, though, and against her better judgement, she decided to take him up on his offer. âI detest the thought of engaging with them, but fine. Youâve surprised me, so I hope they do the same. Any recommendations, or should I just follow the smell?â Rosalie couldnât imagine it ending well, but she owed it to herself to try; Alice wouldâve wanted her to, too.Â
âAnd what good would playing make believe do me?â Rosalie bit back, a little more resentful with her tone this time. âIâll always be this. Frozen, never moving forward. Vampires donât get a happy ending, so thereâs no point pretending that I will, not even for a moment.â
Staring out at the houses without blinking, Jasper swallowed hard, still not trusting himself to inhale. According to Carlisle, moving here had been the safest move for their family, and while Jasper believed him, it clearly wasnât the safest move for everybody else. Heâd been doing his absolute best to avoid thinking about it, but Rosalieâs words brought it all rushing back. âAll I can smell is blood.â
Rosalie may be cold, but never towards her family, and especially not during times where they needed her help. Her gaze softened as she glanced over at her brother, understanding but not relating to his struggles, given her clean record when it came to human blood intake. âJasper, are you alright? We can move further out of the city if itâs too much, Iâll talk with Esme.â Although not technically twins, Rosalie did feel a bond with him that resembled it, more often than not.

Dean refrained from rolling his eyes. âI mean, there are some good mosquito punchlines out there, but fine. Iâm sure youâve heard more than I have. Hereâs hopinâ you have a long life, and can hear a bunch more.â He smirked, before his tone got more serious. âNot to go all Dr. Phil on you here, but have you spoken to a single one that lives here now? And donât bother lying to me, I want a name, if you have. âCause if anythinâ, sweetheart, you can trust me on this â I hold even more prejudice than you do about every non human creature that exists, but even I was surprised when I met them. You, on the other hand, not so surprising.â Yet. At least she hadnât ripped anyoneâs throat out, or not that he knew of.
âRight. Sounds real emotional. Do you ride off into the clichĂ©, too?â Although, outside of his father, his heroes had always been cowboys, so he decided he could respect some horse appreciation, even if they felt untrustworthy to him. âIâd probably feel better on a bull, but the My Little Pony gig â I guess I get it. If it was good enough for Clint Eastwood, it's good enough for me.â
Rosalie smiled, but it wasnât a happy gesture. It was tight lipped and uncomfortable, as living a long life was the last thing that sheâd ever wanted. She couldnât blame the man for his vampire stereotypes, having thought them all in her time as an immortal, but it hurt to be painted with the same brush. âI canât say Iâve wasted my time in doing so.â His honesty was refreshing, however disagreeable. âI think youâd be quite surprised by me, actually. My record is immaculate, Iâve never tasted human blood. My family make the Mikaelsons look like relentless masochists. Which they are.â Sheâd killed five men, but their blood had never touched her lips. Sheâd managed to enact her revenge without becoming a parasite.
âI wish I could.â Her tone was touched with sadness, wanting nothing more than to ride off into a sunset with Emmett, as a human, and with a family of their own. Rosalie found herself surprised by her need to change this manâs opinion of her, and her own honesty, but perhaps it was because heâd seen through her beauty. Most men were easily swayed by her appearance, but heâd challenged her.
Dean shrugged. âMaybe you should think about buyinâ âem deodorant then. Theyâd probably do the same for you.â He was well aware of the two speciesâ natural rejection of each other, but there was no use fanning the flames. Uncrossing his arms, he raised an eyebrow in interest, even if he disagreed. He was obsessed with cowboys, but had never been taken with the whole horse part. No way he liked something with a mind of its own driving him around. Plus, cleaning up after them was a pain, in his minimal experience. âYouâre a horse fan, and youâre tellinâ me werewolves stink? Yikes. So, whyâs that?â Some of the natural defensiveness had left his tone now, curious for the sake of it.
âDoubtful. All they can offer us is poor mosquito jokes and the inability to hold a conversation properly due to their short tempers,â she muttered, rolling her eyes. Rosalie should have seen her own prejudice, but being in a high ranked vampire family, unfortunately she was a product of exactly that. âTheyâre loyal. Disciplined. Skilled. Riding a horse youâve bonded with can be the most relaxing experience to someone with a life that isnât usually⊠normal.â As a member of the supernatural, Rosalie never felt normal. But equestrianism seemed like a purely human experience, so she was thankful whenever she got the chance.
âGood thing I wasnât askinâ you.â Passive aggressive banter was all too common for Dean, and he slipped into it naturally. âWell, thatâs the thing about dogs. They can be real messy, but sometimes, you just gotta love âem.â Dean shrugged, tight smile on his face, though his jaw had set, ready to defend. He was naturally wary of all supernatural, but anything that would ignite the feud between vampires and werewolves heâd definitely actively avoid, especially in a town as tightknit as theirs.
âI guess it is,â Rosalie quipped, her lips forming a tight and sarcastic smile. It was truly fascinating how quickly men could irritate her. âAnd sometimes, you donât. Especially considering how foul the odour is.â She didnât hate dogs, though, despite her words. They were unwaveringly loyal, and she could never dislike loyalty. âI prefer horses, actually."
Oliver eyed the stranger warily, watching her approach. No matter the scenario, heâd always been overprotective when it came to his animals, considering them his only remaining family. Though, even if he didnât, trust hadnât come easily to him in decades. Was it still prejudice if he distrusted each person equally, no matter their species?
At her question, he nodded, bale of hay still clutched in his hands. âThey are, and rightfully so. Not my girls, though. Theyâre good at readinâ people, makinâ their own judgements. Donât matter who you are, theyâll see right through ya.â It was the reason Oliver was watching so closely now, seeing how the mare reacted to the touch. Interestingly, they seemed as calm as each other. It didnât grant the woman his trust, but it did allow Oliver to lower his guard just a little, moving to drop the hay. She at least knew what she was doing.
âThat thereâs Connie, my youngest.â Ripping off some hay, he returned to the woman and offered some out to her for feeding. âIf ya like.â
"Well, that's an indicator of good training," Rosalie complimented, wishing she'd had the same sense of judgement when she was human. Perhaps then, she wouldn't have been inflicted with this curse in the first place. Still, these grounded yet simple moments made her fate seem less horrifying; Rosalie may have changed, as had the world around them, but the core of nature hadn't. It was a small comfort, something outside of her family to take care and interest in.
Rosalie smiled in gratitude when he offered the hay, taking a small handful with a nod. Redirecting her attention, she turned to Connie, fingers outstretched with the food, still retaining her slow and gentle movements. Much to her pleasure, the horse wasted no time in snacking, which must've meant she deemed the blonde to be trustworthy. She sighed in a compilation of relief and joy, smile uplifting her cheeks.
Deciding it appropriate to lower her guard, Rosalie held herself in the moment a while longer before her eyes met the other vampire again. "How did you manage it? Finding a job so... human? How do you make it work?"
