or even better, childhood friends to strangers to lovers. It just makes so much sense to me
We know Varka was born and raised in a normal family, and he trained really hard to become a strong knight. So what if he had a childhood friend who was the total opposite of him? Someone who got "adopted" into a rich family in Mondstadt because she had some kind of secret strength?
They grew up together, trained together, and eventually joined the Knights of Favonius at the same time and got even more closer with time
Then came a mission that went horribly wrong. Everyone thought she died because they couldn’t find her body , so they had no choice but to leave her behind. But the truth is she fell into the Abyss and survived… alone for who knows how long because time works differently there
For Varka, that mission became a huge scar because His whole purpose was to protect the people he cared about, but he couldn’t protect the person he cared about the most. He carried that guilt for years, believing she was dead
Years later, after passing the Hexenzirkels trial, Varka asks to look into Barbeloth’s scryglass and one of the things he sees shocks him and it's that she’s still alive
So of his main goals of his expedition is trying to find her, reunite with her and learn about everything that happened
