"PRZ" stands for "Photo Realistic Zone". PRZ is an artistic project of a virtual photographic report...
Hello, I have begin a little side project called “PRZ”. I don’t know if this could be interesting for some of you, or some of your friends, but feel free to check it out. That’s it, sorry for the kind of “promo” post. (Don’t worry, I’ll still post stuffs on this tumblr too !)
Another breakdown of my process.

Please keep making posts! This is probably the first USEFUL tumblr EVER!
Thank you Anon, I don’t have any feedback on this tumblr, so your message is very much appreciated. I have been overbooked with work this last month, and then I took some holidays, but I also started to write the second part of my lighting tutorial (!). This is probably the most important post I will do for this blog, and It takes me a lot of time to finish it. After that, I will talk about things much less fundamentals, so I would probably have a more steady posting rate.
And for all of my followers ; Feel free to ask me whatever you want to know about light, colors or more specific problems you may encounter in your pictures. My box is empty.
Thanks again, and stay tuned.
“Wollodrin poster color process.” (Lereculey, Lou, ©Delcourt editions)
I did this poster for a comics festival a few month ago. Like every posters, it needed to be eye catchy, so I knew I would have to work with an exposition for the darks in order to keep the light high. Beside, I wanted something dynamic and cheery.
Next, I would have to highlight the heroes, so I used a neutral diffuse lighting on them in order to keep their local colors intact.
Since the picture have 4 plans (the orc and the girl riding the horse, the rest of the heroes, the wall with Frodon, the castle and the dragon), it was necessary to add a direct backlight on them in order to make a strong contrast with the wall and the sky, keeping a particular attention to the depth of the atmosphere. So I set my sunlight behind everything and not to high in the sky.

Lighting tutorial - part 1 : THE BASICS
I realized that, before making other tutorials and theories on comics’s colors, I would really need to be sure that everyone have a clear and sharp understanding of light, since it’s all connected to colors.
So, Here is the first part of it. In this one, I only talk about the basics that will be necessary to know for the other parts.
The second part will talk about the different lighting scenarios, and how they can be used to enhance narration. The third and last part of my lighting tutorial will talk about techniques on how to easily create lighting with Photoshop.
Note that the opposite of an additive scheme is the SUBTRACTIVE scheme,
This is one of the many reasons why a colorist have to know and understand the COLOR WHEEL. There is sometimes some mathematics to perform to know if a surface will be lit or not, with or without a color shift. For example : Does an Orange streetlight can lit a blue car on grass at night, knowing that there is no other emitter around, and the sky being very dark ? Orange is made from RED+YELLOW. Blue is a primary color without red, yellow or orange. Green is made from BLUE+YELLOW.
Orange(Red+Yellow) * (Blue + Green(Blue+Yellow)) = Yellow. Yellow of the grass is the only color that responds to the color cast of the Orange streetlight, so its blue part is completely desaturated and darker. It means that the car will stay dark (light having no effect on it), and that the grass will be a little bit lit, but will also look muddy, kind of brown.
When the sky turns red during a sunset, this is also because of the tiny size of the blue waves and because of the angle of penetration of the light into the sphere of the Earth, making the atmosphere thicker. The smaller balls are completely stop, and all it’s left in the color cast of the sun is Red-Orange-Purple.
To be continued.... I Hope it’ll help, Have fun !

I’m working on a post about color and light, and how to use the light in comics. Do you have questions, or others things you want to know on this subjects ?
