“Yeah- sure, I’m alright- why?”

“Could have beens are dangerous. I try to focus on what is nowadays.” All in all Kayla had done better than anyone expected of her. The time frame of achieving her goals was longer than she imagined but life had that tendency of getting in the way.Â
“I’d argue that it is because the first one absolutely worked out, but it was without her. That is not an easy fact to live with.” Leah would without a doubt be Kayla’s person as long as they lived but there were times she considered stepping away. All of those times revolved around what her best friend had put Rosemary through. The truth, Kayla had realized, was that Leah really missed out. “I know it can be hard to believe but… everything with your mom had nothing to do with you. There was never anything wrong with my precious Rose.”
“You always say that, I know it is important to live in the now and focus on it, but sometimes it’s important, to look back to see how you got here,” Rose shrugged. She didn’t believe there was a right time or correct path on how to get things done. It was just a get to where ever you want to be, whenever you can get there. “I think when you get your dream job, you are just gonna be happy you’re there- not even gonna care how long it took. Whatever that even means.”
Rosemary had heard it before, that Leah was always this way that it wasn’t her fault- but she couldn’t help but feel like it wouldn’t be so frequent if she didn’t exist. “Why do you love her?” Rosemary asked, it just kind of slipped out. She never understood why everyone just put with her mum, why everyone just let her come in and out. “I- I just mean- I saw she put my dad through hell but she must’ve done same for you.”
Not a single person ever in sixteen years wanted me. Out of all the foster homes, out of all the parents who stood outside that chain-link fence and watched us play like we didn’t know what was going on. They picked out kids like we were puppies or cars. But no one ever chose me. Including you.

“I just assume anything involving complex math is too difficult for me. You’re more intelligent than I ever was.” Rosemary was alike Leah in that way, the major difference was that she used that intelligence in a different way. Mason had done an amazing job in raising Rose to be strong despite what she suffered through. It was regrettable that Kayla ever doubted that he had it in him. He had changed entirely and Kayla did everything to support them both when Leah wasn’t able to. “Well things are more consistent than ever. Although with Leah you never get too comfortable. I worry about her not being able to get pregnant, I think she thought of it as a second chance. So far it hasn’t sent her into a spiral… seems like she is really changing.”
“That’s what you guys all say, when you guys were my age how you weren’t as smart as me, but I think you could’ve been,” Rose smiled. She took a sip of her coke, and eased into the booth. Hearing that her mum was still there was enough for her, she really couldn’t stand the idea of her dad being alone again. “I guess because the first one didn’t work out,” Rose tucked a loose hair behind her ear. She couldn’t help but frown a bit.

“Hard classes this semester? You’re certainly a fighter and you’ll kick school’s butt. You have been growing into such a wonderful young woman I feel I ought to say it more. Good. So close to finishing the requirement for my doctorate of physical therapy that I can taste it.”
“A bit, I mean who knew electrical engineering could be so complicated?” Rose giggled. She was one of few girls in her programs and having to deal with the idiot boys, although she would never tell her mom about it. She did not need Kayla marching in and whopping ass like when she was younger. “I’m so proud of you! I can’t wait until I get to call you doctor... uhm- how’s my mum?” It always felt weird to refer to Leah as her mum but whenever she was in the picture it was the agreement that Kayla and Rose made, not in actual words but she knew how things would be if she did call Kayla mum in front of Leah. She didn’t need to give more reasons to runaway.Â

“How’s school going? I don’t know if I say this often enough but I am so proud of you.”
“It’s kicking my ass but I’m fighting back hard. Thank you, you definitely say it enough but I never get tired of hearing it. How are you?”

she asks me why i never write poetry, i tell her that inspiration is a tricky thing and that i just haven’t had the time really when instead it’s more like my mind is a messy room and i am constantly tripping over you.

You’re taking on a big responsibility as my only salvation.
I owe you one since you took me in in my time of need.

The semester barely started and I’m ready to have a breakdown.Â
On the plus side, you got me and I won’t let you fail.
