Here’s the full version of Dr. Goodfriend’s explanation of why Rose Tyler is the most important companion to the Doctor and why he’s in love with her. You’ll have to open the images to read the full text.

This is part of a book called Doctor Who Psychology and this particular chapter is by Dr. Wind Goodfriend who is a social psychologist and university lecturer who has written multiple textbooks of her own, including one on intimate relationships. Needless to say, if anyone knows who the most impactful companion the Doctor ever had was, it would be her. There’s also other aspects of the Doctor’s attraction to Rose explained in this chapter, but I felt this was the most important.

honestly the power and influence of billie piper playing rose tyler. she had both chris eccleston and david tennant wrapped around her finger. her chemistry with both of them is to this day insane. the other actors in doctor who long after her bring her up in conversation and she continues to be brought up in the show. on a zoom reunion, she was snatched up as ‘companion you’d want to travel with’ instantly. she’s an ordinary girl but there’s no one like her. her arc is so good that they regularly try to recreate or deconstruct it. some of the episodes she’s in are terrible but it doesn’t matter. the doctor loves her so much it both saved him and killed him. multiple times. she lives rent free in every doctor who fan’s mind. love her, hate her, or indifferent to her, she’s the basis for comparison. she’s at the tip of the tongue of people who gush about the show and people who complain. billie piper still affirms her unpopular (correct) opinions about rose and the doctor. she was the consistency, the heart, and she redefined the entire fandom.

I love Ian being at the companion group meeting because his experience with the doctor is probably the most different out of all of them “yes the doctor…he kidnapped me and my wife because we knew too much…I was susan’s teacher! what do you mean who’s that…that’s his granddaughter! No I’m not kidding of course he had a granddaughter he’s an old man. HE LOOKED HOW OLD? Nah I swear he had grey hair…two hearts? I’m sorry lads but I don’t think that’s possible…what’s a gallyfrey? No I don’t think he ever mentioned that to me…SHE? Oh…ok…yeah he couldn’t fly the TARDIS for the life of her, do you know it wasn’t even him that thought about the name? Yeah, once again SUSAN.
