Coffee and Conversation
Vega had always liked it when the higher-ups decided to change things up for whatever reasons. It was too boring to follow the same routine every day in and out, so the restructuring was a welcome thing to the brunette. Worrying about what had caused the new approach, no that wasn’t her thing. Her best friend on the other hand seemed to love nothing more than to worry about it to the point of paranoia.
“Just chill, will you?”, she said with a light smile after her friend had finished her little speech and quickly took her cup of coffee out of the other brunette’s reach. “I think you got enough of that for now. And the enemy? Seriously? That’s just something to scare us into order.” Part of her believed her own words but Vega also remembered the agents who hadn’t come back from their routine trips and the ones who washed up dead unexpectedly. Maybe there was a cause to worry after all but right now the brunette didn’t want that to become a reality. She enjoyed the way life was at the moment and even the doomsday scenario that Rose painted wouldn’t dim her mood.
“But for the sake of argument, what would you want to do? Go on high-risk retrievals?”, Vega leaned back in her chair, taking a sip from her coffee.
"Chill?" Rose couldn't believe the ease with which her friend seemed to accept the recent developments. Was it naivité, stupidity or just an unreasonable calm? "How can I chill?" She sipped her own coffee furiously and when she discovered the cup was empty she noisily sat it down on the table. " Go on missions? Me? I don't know...I mean I am sure that is what's going to happen. They will send people, who aren't trained, what else is there to do when the professionals are dead or missing? But it's not like I can go, I haven't got the gene. If I had they would have recruited me by now, surely. I am not stupid." She began staring at the full coffee cups at the neighbours table with the manic eyes of an addict. " I wish Bertie hadn't ratted me out to the medics. I am not addicted, they are crazy. I just like a little caffeine now and than to give me some energy. I need it! I am so tired and worn out otherwise. I can hardly talk. How can they deny a person their basic fuel? It's mean! Anyway, did you hear the thing about the janitor at the end? It is so typical!"
Suddenly Rose got quiet and looked on the table, ashamed. "Hello, Sir. Did you find it yet? I wish you luck!" The janitor had appeared out off nowhere, and stood next to the girls' table with an etheral smile on his kind, wrinkly face.
