ROS 2 Today
Our presentation from April 2018, ROS 2 Today, an Introduction to ROS 2
Configuring ROS Navigation Stack Sean Scheideman
Simulating Your Own Mobile Robot in Gazebo Sean Scheideman
Tutorial: https://github.com/arvpUofA/tutorials/tree/jan-2018/hercules
January Meetup
We will be giving a series of tutorials on simulating a custom robot in Gazebo. The January tutorial will be on building a 3D model for a skid-steer drive robot using Unified Robot Description Format (URDF) and using the ROS diff_drive_controller package to control it in Gazebo. In February we will show how to integrate the ROS Navigation stack and finally we will give a tutorial on simulating sensors!
December Meetup: Cancelled
The December meetup has been canceled. The next meetup is January 18, and we will be starting a new set of tutorials!
November Meetup
Justin Francis, self-taught programmer and blogger for O'Reilly, will be giving an introduction tutorial to TensorFlow, the popular open-source machine learning framework.
Using Deep Learning for Underwater Object Detection Sean Scheideman
September meetup
In order to plan out better sessions, we would like to hear about your preferences and suggestions.
Help us make content and get to know you better! ; )
Summer Break!
In order to focus all our energy on RoboSub 2017, ARVP is unable to host ROS Edmonton Events this July and August. We are looking forward to bringing great new speakers this Fall when we return in September. We will keep you updated on this website and via email! Thank you for your support this past year. ARVP has enjoyed hosting ROS Edmonton meet ups as it has been a great learning experience for us. If you have suggestions for us or future speakers you would like to see this Fall, please email [email protected]. If you would like to keep updated on how ARVP does in RoboSub 2017, check us out and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, our website, YouTube, or join our mailing list! Thank you and have a wonderful summer!
We’ve had some incredible meet ups this past year! Stay tuned for more information about our June 15th tutorial headed by Noni from ARVP.

No meetups for June, July and August
At the moment we don't have anyone able/willing to organize meetups for the summer. So, with that in mind I'm officially cancelling the meetups for June, July and August. If someone among you is wanting to organize one or more meetup then by all means, send us an email. For those of you with robots If you're wanting to keep making progress send us an email and we can suggest next steps for you. If there are a number of you interested then perhaps you can get together. Let us know and we can put you in touch with one another.
April Meetup - Change of Date, Time and Location
We have a unique opportunity to be part of this year’s ISA Automation EXPO and Conference (http://aecalberta.ca/). So we have changed this month’s meetup to Wednesday, April 20 @ 5 PM at the Edmonton Expo Centre, Halls F & G.
The EXPO will feature 175 exhibitors (and us) and will be free to attend. The meetup will be held after the networking function, which will be held between 3 and 5pm. This is a great opportunity to connect with industry professionals and see some of the automation products that are offered right now.
Entrance to the Expo, the mixer and our meetup are free.
The meetup will largely focus on presenting ROS to a new audience. The tentative schedule is:
- What is ROS? What is ROS-Industrial? - Amazon picking challenge (Camilo) - Bento Arm (Craig) - Robot visual fixtures in industry context
March 17, 2016 Meetup - RPi2 and the physical world
This Thursday we will examine on how to program the Pi to interact with the physical world.
We will focus on some of the basics of interacting with the GPIO pins using the python programming language. No prior knowledge of python will be required. The examples that will be given are:
how to read button input,
turn on an LED,
and read an I2C sensor.
The meetup will be this Thursday March 17, at 6:30 pm at the StartupEdmonton headquarters located at 10359 104 St NW, Edmonton.
Important February Meetup
This month’s meetup is Thursday, Feb 18, 2016, 6:30 PM @ Startup Edmonton.
We are going to have a meeting to discuss the future of the group.
Hope to see you there.

January 21, 2016 - Building Robots that learn and adapt
Thursday, Jan 21, 2016, 6:30 PM @ Startup Edmonton
This month I will give an introduction to reinforcement learning. Reinforcement learning is a branch of artificial intelligence which looks at learning how to achieve goals. It lets us build robots that learn from interaction with the world around them and with people and even other robots. In my opinion, it is one of the key pieces for producing true (general) AI. Also, it's an incredibly simple concept to grasp, so don't worry that it will be over your head if you don't have a degree in math :) We will also have a few robot demos using reinforcement learning from Brendan Bennett. Following the talk we'll have some time to work on our robots, so bring your kit. We'll see if we can get driving the robots with a joystick.
