             The insideof her cheek is bitten, with enough force to draw blood and the metallic tasteoverwhelms her mouth—she wants to say something, anything will do, somethingthat will make the man go away. His words sting, more than if he had simplyspat on her and left, because genuine kindness feels foreign to her by thispoint.

         Fingernailsdig into dirty palms, leaning against the alleway wall after he has walked pasther without as much as second glance—he’s not seeking the company of a womanlike her, he doesn’t even feel like the kind of man who would crave nakedflesh. And perhaps, that’s why, despite her attempts to erase any kind offeeling from her face, his words have stung so much. And the worst fucking partis that a part of her doesn’t want him to leave her—oh,does she think him her prince charming? Bullshit, she stopped believing insuch a thing a long time ago.

        Nobody has ever loved me, and I doubt they everwill, oh, she almostsays that, yet fortunately manages to bite her tongue just in time—how fucking patheticwould that be, to utter those words she so fervently tries to conceal to a manshe dislikes more than anyone else in the world? because Lottie craves love just as much as any otherhuman being, yet her stubbornness, her fear of rejection, they prevent her fromletting people in—rejection runs throughher life like a constant reminder of who she was before Master Glen found her,and so, the fear is still there, even right now.

          She cannotlet him see such vulnerability in her, she knows he’ll use it to his advantage—that’swhat she expects a man to do; always; only Master Glen is anexception. Furthermore, Jack Vessalius is far more annoying than any other manshe’s ever met… and even then, his words still catch her off guard—she knows hedoesn’t mean a word of it, he can’tmean it. A man as shallow and vain as him cannot love anyone but himself.

           “how manywomen have you said that nonsense to?” she finally replies, tries her best tosimply seem annoyed, as she usually is, pretend she isn’t repeating his wordsinside her mind over and over, trying to decipher just what they mean, “cut it out, Vessalius, I know men like you farbetter than you assume—you’re all empty words and sweet nothings, but you don’tmean it and you never will,” nobody would ever love me for who I am,anyways, “if you think I’ll fall for your cheap pick up lines, then you’re wrong.”

         Dagger remainspressed against his jugular, every mocking taunt he spits does nothing but fuelher desire to cut past the skin and bleed him whole—oh, but she’s no fool, sheknows he’s doing this on purpose,making her think she has the advantage so she’ll lower her guard. She’s grownto learn more and more about the Hatter during their periodical meetings, whenthey toss each other around and none of them accomplishes anything of value,and so she knows she cannot underestimate him.

        Teeth gritted,jaw tensed, she tries not to show just how annoyed she is by his comment—she hatesbeing underestimated, she’s been so all her life, and this fucking clown enjoysgetting on her nerves far too much. And the worst part is that he succeedsevery time, no matter how much she tries to conceal it. There’s just somethinginherently disgusting about this man, and it gets to her every time.

            Fingers tightentheir hold onto the blade that bites deeper into his skin, and even though she’sgot him pinned against the wall, she knows better than to boast—Lottie can bereckless by nature, but pains is a good teacher,oh is it ever, “you’re being awfully arrogantwith someone who can slit your throat and let you bleeding on the Rainsworth’s fancyrug,” she mutters through gritted teeth, tries her best to behave as if she hasthe upper hand, “I know you get off on this, but at least you could try andhide it—naughty Hatter, it’s like death gets you hard or something--- but don’t worry, i’m happy to indulge~”
