I don't know anything about the supernatural situation, but it's certainly not covert, and it's still going on (he recently released a director's cut of the x files' 2008 movie which was already bad and is now even worse because he cut the movie's only redeeming scenes). he very badly wanted his two leads to be a buddy cop duo, no hanky panky involved, but the ever growing female audience picked up on the very obvious chemistry and birthed the term "shipping". Chris Carter did Not like that, he kept pushing his agenda despite the actors and most of the other writers' wishes, "platonic coworkers" is still a meme in the x files fandom. now, I'm not a big fan of romance in media myself, and I think he could've made it work, but the way he went about it was incredibly misogynistic (only the male lead was allowed to get laid, and god forbid a woman experiences sexual attraction: she immediately gets punished for it). the original run (somehow, miraculously) ends with them getting together, but watch out! in 2008 he releases this terrible awful no good movie. Mulder and Scully are emptied of all the juice that made the characters work so well together and separately. and then. there are the revivals. Mulder and Scully are divorced for an unknown reason. it's revealed that the child they had in the original series (long story) was actually a product of medical rape. another reveal that follows quickly after this one is Scully's pregnant again. she's in her 50's and infertile, but who cares, because woman must have baby, right? obviously the fanbase was upset with all that, as was Gillian Anderson, who said that she didn't want to do anything with this show ever again. but Chris Carter just kept saying that nobody understands his genius vision, he has plans for more seasons (even after one of his leads noped out of it). fast forward a few more years, he releases that director's cut, emphasis on "cut" because it's shorter than the original movie, devoid of all the scenes that imply any hint of romance between Mulder and Scully (except, ironically, the one where they're in bed together which he couldn't cut completely because they're discussing the case. y'know. as coworkers do). so yeah, sorry this is long and convoluted, but Chris Carter is one weird guy. let it go dude, it's been over 30 years. come on.
