This photo from Lewa, by Ami Vitale, won second prize in the nature category of the 2015 World Press Photo Contest, which has now been collected in a book.

Samburu warriors touch an orphaned rhino called Kilifi for the first time at Lewa wildlife conservancy in Kenya. None of the warriors had seen a rhino before and some had never seen a photo of one. The young warriors had been visiting to learn about conservation practices, as these communities hold the key to saving Africa’s great animals.

I was inspired to create this gif after reading "Why our future depends on libraries, reading and daydreaming" by Neil Gaiman, and seeing images of an abandoned Detroit library. When I was a kid, I rode my bike every Saturday to the local library, which was less than a mile from my home. Where I live now, a child would have to ride her bike 10 miles to the nearest library. Even by car, it takes a dedicated parent and engaged child to make the trip. All the more reason adults, whether they have children or not, need to show enthusiasm and support for public libraries.

Spotted Porcelain Crab (Porcellana sayana)

…a species of porcelain crab that occurs along the western coast of the Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Cape Hatteras to Brazil. P. sayana typically inhabits ‘shallow’ water, depths of around 300 feet, and is usually found among rocks and shells. Spotted porcelain crabs hold a commensal relationship with two species (Pagurus pollicaris and Petrochirus diogenes) of hermit crabs and it is often seen living withing their shells. Like several other porcelain crab species P. sayana is parasitised by the bopyrid isopod A.curtatus which lives inside its gill chamber.

Alice Munro, either through the worst timing or the best, now has a fantastic story to tell. The newest winner of the Noble Prize in Literature doesn’t have to recall the moment of her win. She can replay it for herself, over and over, as many times as she wants. 

Because she wasn’t around, apparently, when the Swedish Academy tried to call her to inform her of the news. So the Swedish Academy did what any would-be message-deliverer finally will when the phone goes un-picked-up: It left her a voicemail.

The federal government shutdown has very few silver linings, particularly for women, but here’s one: the women in the federal women’s prison in Danbury, CT., are staying put, at least for now.

That’s a relief to the activists and Democratic senators who have fiercely opposed the planned move of the Connecticut women’s prison to Aliceville, AL, arguing it would tear families in the Northeast apart. They now have more time to make their case to the Bureau of Prisons.

Digiday spoke with a handful of top editors at killer publications to get the best career advice they ever received

David Plotz, editor, Slate When I got my first journalism job at the Washington City Paper in 1993, I was not a good reporter and I was not a good writer. I turned in a long feature about a neighborhood fight over a power plant to the editor, Jack Shafer. Jack looked at the story, then ran a global search-and-replace on the document, swapping out every single “is” and “are” with the word “fuck.” He told me: Don’t come back until you have replaced every fuck with an active verb. That was great advice for a young writer and reporter, and it made for one aggro story.
