I sometimes like to think of project hail mary as a love letter to teachers. Because when you really think about it, after everything with his disproven paper and basically made out to be a pariah in the scientific community, he decided to be a teacher. Someone who changes the world through influence on a younger generation to teach them to be better.

Stratt said he didn't even have a dog and to stop pretending it's about his students. Those students were his kids, so it was also about his students, he was a healthy influence and positive role model, and I really like how they portray that in PHM. Teachers educate tomorrow's scientists and Grace was clearly an advocate for that. (It can even be further seen at the end of the movie when he's teaching on Erid.)

Most sci-fi stories pin it in on soldiers or astronauts or someone with a crazy hard background, but he was a good man who wanted to make a difference that lasted. And this could be a stretch, but I personally think that at its core, the story shows teaching is more than a job- it's a way of viewing life with optimism and a deep care for the future.

Anyways, loved the movie, definitely a favorite, and I quote it with my siblings all the time

MOST films are not shot in chronological order due to a million logistical and financial reasons. so i'm currently going insane over the fact that lord and miller had an intensely rigorous shooting schedule that demanded that phm be shot in order to maintain emotional authenticity, that the literal first shot of the film is the first one they shot because they wanted ryan to be waking up to the production...

headcanons about Eridian culture:

Repeating a word is linguistically the equivalent of putting "fuck" in front of it. the language values word efficiency so much that repeating words was only ever used in intense situations and over the years it became incredibly taboo. the more you repeat the word, the more intense of swearing you're doing.

The arm rubbing "goodbye" is only used for permanent goodbyes, when you know you'll never see them again or after they die. Eridian funerals are filled with that sound.

The lines in their arm that they're rubbing against are carved for each loss they experience. The more important they were to you, the deeper and bigger you make the carving

just heard in the phm directors' commentary that the "space dots" projector shot in the classroom scene of grace showing his students astrophage was done by them "burning steel wool and inverting the image to black and white"???!!!!

are you KIDDING ME?!?! that is insane. in other words, an effectively 'background' comp by definition, that typically without question would normally have been assigned as solely VFX in ANY other film, is given an ingeniously creative physical, practical effect solution that you would never expect to create or find.

this is why project hail mary is so goddamn good. this is why practical movie magic is so good. that's our humanistic intuition. we can tell when things are real. it's not just in the life-affirming emotional clarity that you find in the characters' stories. it's also in the behind the scenes stories of how they created moments like the characteristic shadow of an alien lifeform from doing shit like fuckin setting steel wool on fire. and then having feelings about it.

that's art. that's storytelling. that's being human. that's life is reason.

She's an historian. She knows that when dwindling resources will start mass panic and anger in the people, someone will have to take the fall. Someone will be blamed and who better than the most powerful person in the world? She's the scapegoat. She signed away her freedom and her life the moment she took the job. She's an historian- she knows that when the ruler goes down, the second in command is not spared.

Keeping Grace in the dark was perhaps a way to keep him away from the realization that he's another backup, but it was also a way to keep him safe for the days after. He was never officially her second and he has reasonable deniability- she planned him an out. She planned for his freedom. But in the end, she did what she had to do.

Eva Stratt is many things, but she was never cruel.

They would be MENACES. They'd have so many contraptions running between the halves of the ship, and she'd be figuring out how to get it through Grace's thick fucking skull that the space spider is hot for teacher.

Oh my dear Christ, yes. The universe took Ilyukhina away because it wasn't prepared for the chaos she and Rocky would have wrought.
