just heard in the phm directors' commentary that the "space dots" projector shot in the classroom scene of grace showing his students astrophage was done by them "burning steel wool and inverting the image to black and white"???!!!!

are you KIDDING ME?!?! that is insane. in other words, an effectively 'background' comp by definition, that typically without question would normally have been assigned as solely VFX in ANY other film, is given an ingeniously creative physical, practical effect solution that you would never expect to create or find.

this is why project hail mary is so goddamn good. this is why practical movie magic is so good. that's our humanistic intuition. we can tell when things are real. it's not just in the life-affirming emotional clarity that you find in the characters' stories. it's also in the behind the scenes stories of how they created moments like the characteristic shadow of an alien lifeform from doing shit like fuckin setting steel wool on fire. and then having feelings about it.

that's art. that's storytelling. that's being human. that's life is reason.

MOST films are not shot in chronological order due to a million logistical and financial reasons. so i'm currently going insane over the fact that lord and miller had an intensely rigorous shooting schedule that demanded that phm be shot in order to maintain emotional authenticity, that the literal first shot of the film is the first one they shot because they wanted ryan to be waking up to the production...

THAT is cinema. LIFE imitates ART!!!!!!!!!!!!

obsessed with the fact that in the phm score, the choir starts and/or is featured as the prominent voices during grace's most human moments. when he's moved to tears. when he's overcome with emotion. the music is soft, and the choir swells when he connects with his humanity.

I'm not used to painting. It was supposed to be a fun project but it turned out pretty good hahahah I had to make it under blue light so the planet is a bit boring with normal light, will have to retouch that eventually. But hey, I didn't think I'd be able to pull it off! So it's a win for me

once you realize that ryan gosling has a bunch of tattoos dotted around his arms and start looking for it then you start to see how many little costume pieces are there to try and obscure them on grace. he has that wide watch he wears most of the time, his t-shirt sleeves all stop at the same precise spot on his biceps, when he wakes up in medical environments he'll have cuffs and bandages that cover those same spots, etc. they aren't 100% covered all the time, the barcode on his inner left wrist in particular sneaks in during a few hand-focused shots, but you only tend to notice if you're looking for it so the costume and makeup team did a perfectly serviceable job distracting from them. a fun thing this does, though, is characterize grace not as a person without tattoos, but as someone with tattoos who habitually covers them up even when he's up in space hanging out with his blind bestie.

omg yes and the other side of this is when you start looking for it in his other movies, you realize how many of his characters they did absolutely nothing to hide them. i'm thinking about place beyond the pines and song to song in particular. they fit his characters perfectly and there's a piece of ryan right there and i love that.

unraveling at the seams thinking about how graces reaction to remembering that he was drugged and forced onto the mission was to come to the conclusion that he was a coward. like on some level sure he was angry at stratt but he was far angrier with himself. he built up this story in his head that somewhere somehow along the way he developed the courage and bravery to choose to sacrifice himself for earths sake. he clung to this story when he didnt have anything else. and it wasnt real. not only was he a vicious coward but he threatened to sabotage a mission to save the entire world because his desire to live was so overpowering. there was nothing that couldve convinced him otherwise. not his kids, not the rest of humanity, nothing. and he tears himself APARTTTTT for this. if you want rocky to get this secret out of grace youre gonna need twelve hours, some elbow grease, and industrial grade lube thats how deep the shame lies. i think grace is incredibly angry about how it all went down and i also think that if you told him he didnt deserve it he'd probably bite your head off

what gets me about the dream thing is that hes SO unserious about it. book!grace wouldve said yeah we spend more than two hours hallucinating each night and then rocky wouldve been like tf???? and then he wouldve gone on a five minute tangent about dream science and how we havent really figured out how exactly it works yet.. etc etc. meanwhile movie!grace is out here waxing poetry and giving rocky a borderline incomprehensible definition of the word just so he can say life with you is like a dream. dude what.
