This was a project I've worked on for the past while. While working on the gun animations lower down I was getting annoyed at having to constantly adjust finger placement while grabbing complex items. So I decided to figure out how to automate fingers using IK. I found different approaches worked best for different challenges, so I incorporated both into this demonstration. The spring solver gives fantastic curves and natural looking placement of the joints, but struggles with fine control and preventing geometry crashing. While the more typical Ik chain allows finer control of the finger tip and joint chain, at the cost of making unnatural angles possible. Regardless, This rigging setup allows complex animations such as a closeup of writing with a pen to not only be possible, but fairly easy to create.
