Leon, quietly: "I'm so proud of you"

It is very late at night, most residents of the Belmont estate have long since gone to bed. But of course a certain somehow was barely asleep, his amber eyes staring up at the ceiling as he lay on top the duvet instead of under it with his wife. He had been previously worried about something, anything, such as the well-being of his infant son nearby in his cradle. Or if his wife is still asleep what with her postpartum aches and all, what he wishes he could save her from. To his aging in-laws who came to visit and welcome the newborn and congratulate the couple, to see their daughter well… and he had hoped he could be of any help at all in keeping them comfortable, too. Impress them further and for anyone in the household to just see him as being able to be a good anything. Beyond that of… hunter. Slayer. Adventurer.

Simon is sure of it, but something eats away at the self-assurance he thought he had. Sone would agree he was too confident after retelling the story of his quest to slay the Damned One. Maybe he was. And now it’s his time to doubt himself, more than wondering as a child, hoping he shall make his macarons proud one day-

Simon jolts to attention.

Selena stirs but remains asleep, as does little baby Victor. His heart skips when he hears the voice again, leading him quietly out to the hall and skipping over the wooden boards that squeak too loudly. It is only then that there is no one outside, his fiery brows knitting closer together when he closes the door in quiet frustration. So naturally, upon spinning around on his heels, he holds his breath suddenly, when he would see a glimpse of a spirit in the moonlight. The voice he hears coming from this knight..? Someone who is most familiar, if he remembers the portrait that lasted centuries and is currently living in the cellar until further notice. Who could forget the (albeit damaged slightly) portrait of the man who stands next to his son’s gently rocking cradle.

“… ‘Tis not the best of times to show your face, specter.” He speaks in a hushed tone, carefully padding his way by candlelight over to the semi-transparent image of this armored fellow. He winces as he felt a sharp pain rush up his backside having him halt his steps a few feet before him. No tripping over the rug nor crashing into anything that would spell chaos in the bedroom. Simon sees his sleeping baby, happy, safe and dreaming, then gazes over to The Founder.

Acting as if seeing a ghost in your home is no big deal, so long as it’s someone of the family.

“But. Your words mean a lot to me. Even if they are a bit early. We shall see if I can be a good man in the home as much as a good man of the people…” Out of habit, he reaches for his shoulder and massages a part of his injury.

“I’ve been beginning to doubt myself.”

Raising his hands in the air, Simon gives a strained and nervous smirk - maybe - to the Count.

“Whoa, there, Mr. Tepes, I think you need to relax some… think about your blood pressure?”

Simon enters the room.

Sees two copies of the same medieval knight just standing around in his living room.

Simon leaves the room.

”Mm. If this was supposed to intimidate me, then I feel bad for not reacting. Since it doesn’t.” Simon replies, not giving the ancient vampire the time of day. He’s more interested in his hot cup of delicious coffee, complete with fresh and warm papanasi courtesy of his dear wife.

“Maybe after my break here, and after I help my tasks with the farm, I can perhaps use my world class acting skills to make you feel better, sound good?”

What were the effects of curse on you?

It’s a good thing that Simon is sitting down, already tucking into his first drink of the night with his meal, staring off to the farthest wall.

“Slow, progressively painful death, to put it lightly.” A sip of the mead slides down his throat as he continues.

“I sustained a great wound across my back from Count Dracula. Nearly crippled me yet I had to press on and win the fight. My wife helped me with keeping it clean and bandaged. But it hurt me until the pain dulled and had me forget, until the next flare up. It never healed and my body slowly began rotting away. I couldn’t hide it after a while as the curse spread across my body, making me look absolutely hideous. It drained my stamina, made me look like a pale corpse. But it wasn’t the only thing.”

“I felt as if I was no longer myself. It was more than just my body dying, no. Who I was and still am on the inside was changing and perishing, too. If my soul leaves my body it could mean that his curse could take over, and… he could continue on in my body. Destroyed as it would be, I’m sure Dracula would know how to repair it, with whatever strange spells or natural abilities a great vampire like him has.”

“To say I, too, felt a bit like some undead beast during those seven long years… but clearly. I pulled through, and now I'm living the best life with my wife and son.”

Has anyone compared you to Strawberries, Simon? Like, your wife, has she ever said you tasted like strawberries?

"Oh Selena? No, she mistook me for a bear when we first met and tried to attack me with farming tools. I, well. I was a bit more rugged back then when I did more traveling by myself. Also, I suppose crouching about on the edge of her family's property in broad daylight with that coat of furs on may have helped in her confusion..."

"Though cherries are preferred by her more than strawberries, which were a bit more rare to see than those and say, blackberries. But as for her saying I tasted like strawberries? Or any of these berries?"

He thinks for a moment, but the thought doesn't click. Right away, at least, as he rubs his bare chin.

"... Oh. Heh. Of course. That. Well. I can confidently say that when she kisses me, she enjoys it more now that I don't have the 'beastly beard' itching her. As for flavor, I never really asked. Perhaps it's time to find out."

No. He is very wrong. You see. He had met another Simon. In a mirror. A mirror that didn't roll off the wall and try to attack him, but instead? His mirror image jumped out at him in order to kill him instead!

And. There was another time that he met another him. It also attacked him. But thankfully did not live in mirrors and actually was recruited by this guy with the biggest timepiece he ever saw. Something about timelines and such?

Never going to explain away the many, many multicolored and screaming, scampering copies of himself all shouting the same phrase over and over... and they were in a team of ten. With a oversized mutant yellow electric mouse as their leader. Lord help him.

What a time to be wrong and right at the same time. Perhaps he should be out on the lookout for more Simon-things like that. Can't trust anyone, not even yourself.
