I thought I'd make a longer post about this because I find it interesting. Theo's character in Teen Wolf has been my favorite since I first watched it in 2020, I thought his character was one of the best written characters in the show (don't fault me I was 12/13 at the time.) But in reality Teen Wolfs' writing is mediocre at best, not including Season 3B.
But Theo's character always seemed like it had so many ideas and it just failed a bit. I genuinely believe that Theo could've been the best villain in the show, and could've had one of the best redemption arcs in teen media. (Stiles glazers please don't come at me, I love the Nogitsune and I find the fact that it just does what it does for fun is great and all, I just like a more motivated villain.)
So Cody Christian (Theo's actor) is half Native American on his mums side, part of the Penobscot nation. https://www.tumblr.com/olivedunham/125827411217/cody-christian-is-half-native-american-cody

I think this post is extremely important. However I am going to add something. The fact the Theo's punishment for what he did was a Skinwalker prison is so much worse when you know his character is Native American. (As stated in Olives post, no matter how Theo is written he is Native because Cody is.) Theo already got a much worse punishment for attempting to kill Scott than any of the adults did, to my memory, albeit he actually succeeded at first. Although it originates from Navajo culture first, Skinwalkers are apart of Native American culture. For people who don't know much about Skin Walkers, they are considered dark creatures that look human and shape shift into animals and would use magic for evil and harm. (which does fit the Teen Wolf universe, however I personally think their depiction of Skin Walkers suck.) But depending on the indigenous group or location depictions of them could vary. They are not the same as Wendigos. (Also the best odeon depiction of a Wendigo is the ones in Until Dawn).
Theo's character grew up in California, and Skin Walkers come from the south west of America, therefore in an area that he would've most likely grown up hearing warning tales about them. Often creatures such as Skin Walkers (I am not denying their existence if you believe them) are created to be used as cautionary tales for kids to stop them from doing things. i am not sure if that is why they exist. But I am basically saying that Theo defiantly heard about them growing up.
Him being trapped in a skinwalker prison is such an interesting part of his story. Going back to what I said earlier I don't really think his punishment should've been lessened because it being that bad makes it better for his redemption arch. But I think in comparison to Kate, Peters and others punishments it feels drastic, at least some of them should've had it worse.
It feels like the closest that we would've got to conformation of his indigenous identity. But it feels like such a ridiculous way to do it? It feels so ridiculous and kind of offensive? I feel like there could've been so any better ways to do it.
I feel like it is something that Theo and Scott could've connected with as kids (though they are obviously different, Scott being Mexican) being some of the only poc people in their class and they also both had asma, somethings that Stiles couldn't connect with. I also think the fact that there is no flashbacks to them hanging out as kids is such a miss from the show. It would really impact what happens between them when they're older. Obviously with hindsight there could've been references to Theo before too. But I think that Scott being so trusting (although it is part of his character), to the extent he is with Theo doesn't make sense. So what if Theo and Scott were closer due to their identity's. Obviously it wouldn't have to be like this, but in general I think there should've been flashbacks. Idk I'm kinda just yapping now.
I would like to state that I'm not American or Indigenous in any way, I am in fact British, so if i got anything wrong please correct me. Also I'd like to hear other peoples feelings about this.
#I think just ignoring it was so dumb when they went with that plot point existing
# I love Theo so much, he used to pmo so much but loved him in season 6
