“Of course you can go on a train one day,” he told Isaac and grinned. He made a note that they should take a day trip and ride the train one day soon. Suddenly, Isaac found the button on his toy that turned it on, and he looked over at Rowan with wide eyes. It was all over…
He heard Isaac shriek with joy when Rowan got him out of the car. “Alright, buddy, ready t’ go in an’ pick out your other birthday present?” He grinned and they walked into the shelter. It only took a few moments before Isaac was scrambling out of his mum’s arms to look into the cages. “Isaac, stay near mummy and daddy please…”
“I get present b’cause I turn’d two daddy, you get present when you turn two,” Isaac explained to his father, one hand grabbing on to Rowan’s ear and the other wrapped about her neck. He had made the decision to leave his new train friend in the car. As they got inside, Rowan placed Isaac on the ground, quickly scrambling for his hand before he could run off and get lost. “I’ve got him,” Rowan called to Freddie, guiding Isaac back over to where his father was standing.
“Now Isaac, because you’re a very special boy -- we decided we wanted to let you get a very special friend,” Rowan explained to the squealing toddler. “But the way we do that is we be very quiet so we don’ scare the pups -- just like the ones we see on out walks, right lil guy?” Rowan looked at Isaac who was no longer squealing, but rather whispering “wike a baby mouse. Daddy -- you’re daddy mouse, Mummy -- mummy mouse.” he said.
