Decided to test out the card decks I bought from The Story Engine site and wanted to share what I came up with! I have all 3 main decks + expansion/booster packs, but just in PDF form, hence the sticky notes haha. I'll also leave my little opinion on the decks at the bottom for anyone interested :) Note that I am not sponsored by Story Engine, I'm not even a big platform in the slightest anyways LOL
This is my setup so far! We'll go through each note individually and I'll try to explain the connections I made between them. I also left some questions to answer about each note in another post, so if you like this post you should look forward to that! Also, feel free to provide your own thoughts about this, whether that be interpretations of connections between notes, potential answers to unanswered questions, or opinions on The Story Engine as a whole :) I'd love to see what y'all think! I've been cooped up in my house for weeks and this has been my only entertainment LMAO so I'm eager to talk with people about it
Ok so 1st + 2nd cards--I really coulda combined them to make this easier to understand but it's alright.
Character (we'll call them A) has a pet or guardian animal and created a notable item. This'll be important later because both those things will connect to other notes, but that's all you need to know for now! Here are some questions to keep in mind while we continue, though:
- Who is A's guardian animal? Why do they have one? How did they meet?
- What item did A create? How and for what purpose? Why is it notable?
On the next sticky note are A's goal & conflict for the storyline. They want to release a monster, but they will be banished from the place they love most. Interesting, right? Following the first arrow, we'll go look at the card directly below it: the Creature! But first, some questions to keep in mind:
- What is this monster? Why does A want to release it? Why is it considered a monster? How does A plan to release it?
- What is the place A loves most, and why do they love it so much? Why would they be banished from it, and how would they react to being banished?
Now let's take a look at The Creature! It is venomous and/or poisonous and considered sacred or blasphemous by a faction... interesting! First, I'm gonna use this note to answer some questions we had earlier, just based on the arrows we've seen leading to it so far:
- This Creature is A's guardian animal, and the same monster A wants to release!
Not much, but I don't want to answer all the questions right away, I wanna leave something open to interpret later. So, let's follow the next arrow to the faction that considers Creature sacred/blasphemous, but first, some questions to think about:
- Why does Faction consider Creature sacred/blasphemous?
Now, Faction ousted a former leader, has confusing or contradictory founding texts, and wants to open an ancient door that can only be unlocked by a certain item 👀 Super cool! This doesn't answer any questions for me right now, so we'll move on to the leader they ousted, but questions first, of course!:
- Who is the former leader they ousted and why were they ousted?
- What do the founding texts say and how are they confusing/contradictory? What actually happened, and why is this changed in the texts?
- Why do they want to open this door? Where does it lead? Why can it only be unlocked by a certain item?
Okay, now for the ousted former leader of Faction! We'll call this character B. B's accomplishments were erased from history, they have body art of a creature, item, or location, and they want to restore or repair a legendary artifact :0 I don't really think this answers any questions for me yet, at least not on its own, so let's just ask our new questions then move on to the artifact :)
- What accomplishments did B make that were erased from history? Who erased them, how, and why?
- What is the body art depicting and why is this important to B?
- What is the legendary artifact B wants to restore and why? How do they plan to restore it?
Now let's look at said artifact! It is destroyed a little bit each time it's used and wrongly thought to be destroyed in an event, which has an arrow connecting to the next note. Okay, so, let's answer some questions just based on the arrow connections so far:
- A created this item. Faction wants to use it to open a door. B wants to restore it.
Now for some extra questions before we move on:
- Why is it destroyed a little each time it's used? What is it used for?
- What is the event in which it was thought to be destroyed? Why do people think it's destroyed? Why isn't it actually destroyed? Who knows it isn't destroyed, and how do they know?
And here's the event! All it says is "a grim tithe to a powerful entity has come due." Very spooky lol! This isn't too much to work off of for answers, but it does open up some new questions:
- What is the tithe and who owes it? Are they able to pay it?
- Who is the powerful entity this tithe is owed to, and how do they plan to claim it? Why do they want this tithe in the first place?
The arrow here actually leads us to the "powerful entity", so let's take a look!
Now the deity is where things really start falling into place and get interesting! The deity is followed by a swarm of something (which connects to Creature with its arrow), is vulnerable to a legendary object (which connects to Artifact with its arrow), and wants to gain entry to a location of power (which will lead us to the next note with its arrow). This helps me come up with an answer to a recent question:
- The tithe owed to them is Artifact.
As for the questions it raises:
- Why do swarms of Creature follow them?
- Why are they vulnerable to Artifact?
- What is the location they want to gain entry to and why?
Now, lastly, for the location the deity wants to gain entry to. It's found or settled by Faction and is the supposed site of a gateway to another world... 👀 I think this card does answer a question right off the bat:
- The Artifact is used to open this gateway.
And for our final set of questions to answer:
- How did Faction find Location, and why did they choose to settle in it?
- What other world does this gateway lead to, if the rumors are even true at all?
And that's all I have for now! I'll come back and answer all these questions another time, for now I'm pooped out after spending several hours on this haha.
As promised, my honest opinions on these decks: Overall, I like them, but I'm always hesitant to spend so much money on hobbies and this felt like a very self-indulgent purchase even if I used gift money on it, so I was nervous about it and still sort of am. I'm not sure how much use I'll get out of it, but it's been fun so far! However, the cards start to feel repetitive after a while (which is inevitable with so many cards!) and I really wish they used the same types of cards for each deck to make them easier to combine. I'm sure there are plenty of free alternatives to this system for those who can't afford it, and I'm even considering making my own free alternative to post here just for fun! But if you can swing it, I do think these decks have plenty of potential and are super useful for getting your creativity flowing :) I know I've been talking a LOT, but I also want to say that if you can come up with a creative new way to use these cards, absolutely do so! I love the question/answer mechanic I came up with, and I'm planning to try drawing more cards to answer some questions I've left unanswered here, though that feels like it'll start a neverending rabbit hole of cards so I probably need to put a cap on how many cards I should draw. I also think it'd be a neat idea to take just your favorite prompts from this deck and make an idea board out of it, then try to connect them into one story, instead of drawing randomly, but you'd have a lotta prompts to sift through first LOL. Might actually try that though...
