Theme: Names

This theme stands in for a number of name/word based theme suggestions that I've collected over the past year. This is the most zoomed out version of all of those. Simply, make a game that concerns itself with names. Better yet, make a game that interrogates why names seem significant. There are many traditions across many cultures that make justifications for why the process of naming is important. Why is it that this arbitrary act is so compelling to us?

In pop culture, Earthsea is the first thing that comes to mind. Go read the short story Dragonfly for a quick shot of inspiration. Looking at the real-world, naming is an entire branch of Folklore studies, so there is no lack of writing on the topic.

Challenge: Asynergistic Mechanics

In my mind, this challenge is all about friction. Many designers seek to create perfect lockstep mechanics that slot together like a system of interlocking gears. When reading a new game, the "Ah-ha" moments, where the shape of the system snaps into focus, tends to happen when you start noticing the ways the subsystems work together. This challenge is to do the opposite. Or more specifically to create the same Ah-ha, but with mechanics that purposefully do not synergize. Some OSR games do this fairly well; one of the reasons that they have their brutal reputation is that they afford very few opportunities for mechanical exploitation. Another designer that I'd recommend looking at for inspiration is Snow (snowttrpg.itch.io). .Dungeon especially comes to mind for this. it's a fairly short read so go check it out and try to pick out the points where the system is working against your goals as a player and what the game is conveying with that friction.

Finally a hand sewing tutorial on a hemline that isn't just the ladder stitch! the ladder stitch disappears when you tighten it, but it's not meant for hemlines because it breaks really easily! The overlock stitch is more stable, so it holds much longer, and it won't pucker or warp the fabric!

I'm really stuck on my current mini project. I know I'm not going to have time to actually format and finish it, so that a part of it.

But I'm also stuck on figuring out the wording on this last section. The intention is that there is not anything innate to a soul, and that identity is generated through the complex interplay of internal perception, accumulated material interaction, and external perception. I just can't get it worded in a way I like.

## Soul Sync

*The embodied soul is the terminal point for the network that exists above and behind all things. In incarnating, the soul becomes separate and knowable. No identity is intrinsic to the soul. Rather, the unique experience of existence begins to create the lock for which the Name is the key.*

Souls Syncs are magical processes that act directly from one soul to another. They are always performed in binary between two souls, one existing within a soul network and one existing either within or without. These syncs rely on the temporary naming of both parties, creating a reciprocal bond between the two. When a sync is performed, create a bond between yourself and the other soul, regardless of whether or not the sync is successful.

Each Soul Sync is a magical ritual. The description of the sync sets the parameters for said ritual. The cost for the ritual becomes lower the more information you have for the soul you are syncing. **name.origin.traits.bonds**

Invoking this information will share your own corresponding information with the other soul. Use syncs wisely, as they create the opportunity for vulnerability if the other soul harbors malice and has the wisdom to use it.
