Cletus approached the door hesitantly. He reached for the door bell, then stopped and started to turn back. He hated having to ask for something. Especially asking him for something.
But losing Aurora… That would be even worse.
Taking a deep breath he finally went through with it and rang Octavius door bell.
He sighed.
“It wasn’t always because of fear. Maybe at the start but then usually one thing lead to another and I made it all worse and worse. I promised myself I wouldn’t ever do that to you but what if… what if I’m stressed and scared again? What if I pick the easy way out and don’t stand up for you when it counts? What if I hurt you?”
"... of course all of that can be possible, but so far that's not what's been happening. You could easily just keep me in the dark, push me away, just say everything is fine and that's all that needs to be said. But you haven't. You've been open with me. You've been caring. You've been trying."
Cletus approached the door hesitantly. He reached for the door bell, then stopped and started to turn back. He hated having to ask for something. Especially asking him for something.
But losing Aurora… That would be even worse.
Taking a deep breath he finally went through with it and rang Octavius door bell.
Cletus pressed his lips together to form a thin line and looked away. How was he supposed to explain this without appearing like a failure who needed someone else’s help?
“I … I thought … I wanted to …” he tried before giving up. What was wrong with him? He used to be so eloquent. “I was worried because of you,” he finally murmured in such a low voice it was barely audible. “That you’d break up with me.”
She was very close to missing what he said. But Aurora still clearly heard it.
“Oh Cletus.” She brought a hand to his cheek to get him to look back at her. “Why would I do something like that? I would never think of such a thing, especially after now. I love you too much to leave you.”
He looked into her eyes, mesmerized by their intense beauty.
And yet her words did nothing to calm him down. He felt his heart in his throat and took a shuddering breath.
She loved him. She really said that. He used to mock emotions like these, felt so secure in his aloof distance and now those words brought him to the verge of shaking.
Just tell her you love her back. he told himself. You know how this part is supposed to sound. Just act the part.
And yet…
“Because,” he finally answered her question hoarsely “it’s only a question of time. Until I mess up. Until you find out what I’m really like. It always was. And it always will be.”
Her soft smile started to grow some worry at Cletus’ words.
“What do you mean ‘what you’re really like’?”
Now he had really done it. Another chance at romance and he just had to throw it away. Maybe he could still get out of it by lying, but… he had vowed to himself he wouldn’t go that route again.
“You remember when you met Arron, my adopted brother?” he said slowly. “He told you I was horrible and… he might have a point. I did things that…” He shook his head. “I’m not a hero or what you’d call a ‘good guy’. I lied… to avoid trouble, to get what I want or sometimes out of fear. But I betrayed those who cared about me and I ruined their trust. And even though by now I have learned that in the end this will always be detrimental to me, I’m afraid that this will always be the core of me.”
She stayed quiet for a moment as she listened and thought about what he said. She's seen this man scared before. It's amazing Cletus didn't lie to her in that state really.
"... I mean, it's at least understandable if you were scared sometimes. People can do questionable things when they can't think straight."
Cletus approached the door hesitantly. He reached for the door bell, then stopped and started to turn back. He hated having to ask for something. Especially asking him for something.

He smiled thinly.
“Well, you know I’m not first in line when it comes to dealing with other people’s problems. But the way I see it, this is already my problem as well. You heard him. Even before we arrived that buffoon was targeting me and Octavius. I assume the only way not to be involved would be to cut ties with you and I think I made clear that this isn’t what I intend to do.”
“I guess so. I’m still sorry you had to hear him say all of that. Though I will say.”
In the next moment she was hugging him.
“I’m glad to see you came too. And thank you for what you said earlier. It was very sweet.”
Involuntarily, he gasped at Aurora’s embrace. He usually wasn’t one to initiate public displays of affection even though he wasn’t exactly shy about showing off his body. But expressing emotion like that always seemed so vulnerable to him.
Yet, to his own surprise, his earlier admission hadn’t made Aurora dismiss him with some mocking remark but brought her even closer to him. Maybe sometimes honesty and opening up weren’t so bad.
Tentatively, he wrapped his own arms around her and returned the hug. She felt nice. Soft and warm and her hair smelled soothingly fine. He also appreciated not having his nose at the height of her armpit as it was with those occasions he actually hugged Goal.
“I’m glad I came, too,” he murmured.
Aurora simply enjoyed being like for a few moments before backing up a bit. Now a bit curious.
“Though, how did you know to come out here?”
“Well, you did tell Octavius,” he said, unable to fully keep the displeasure out of his voice.
“I wanted to talk to him about…” he hesitated. There was that honesty issue again. He was unwilling to lie to her but talking about his insecurities was just out of the question. “… about something,” he finished lamely. “He was worried about you. We both were. So we decided to better go and see if you were okay.”
"You don't want to say what that something is?"
She didn't want to pry too much, but she was genuinely curious. Not everyday she hears those two are interacting without a third party making them be in each other's presence.
Cletus approached the door hesitantly. He reached for the door bell, then stopped and started to turn back. He hated having to ask for something. Especially asking him for something.

In the next moment she was hugging him.
"I'm glad to see you came too. And thank you for what you said earlier. It was very sweet."

He wanted to say no. But when had honesty ever paid off for him?
“I…” he tried again, desperate to get the cursed stammering under control. “Of course. Why wouldn’t I be? I was merely… surprised to learn you went out here to meet… him.”
“.. I promised him a talk and that’s what he got. That was my last promise to him.”
She could tell Cletus was at least trying to keep together like usual. But of course that doesn’t just get rid of how he was before.
“Yes, yes, yes, I get that. I just… You could have told me.”
For the first time he looked into her eyes and mentally braced himself for the rejection he expected to come.
Aurora looked back at him, then after a moment looked towards the ground.
“I’m sorry.”
She just wanted this settled on it’s own without pulling people into it. Especially with how it ended up going.
He bit his lip. He didn’t want her unhappy he was just aching to get some answers.
“Don’t be. I know I’m not… the most… trustworthy… You know, with how my last relationship went. I only thought… You told Octavius and…” He sighed, unable to find the right words.
"No it's not that I don't trust you. I just didn't want to pull you into this. I know how he is. And seeing how he was with you now just proved it more to me. I almost didn't even tell Octavius, but I knew just going completely on my own would be a horrible idea."
Cletus approached the door hesitantly. He reached for the door bell, then stopped and started to turn back. He hated having to ask for something. Especially asking him for something.

For Aurora: ✭ (although we're pretty much already there) ➽ For Octavius: ♣, ❦, ♡, ϟ,
I mean yeah we pretty much are
But the octi ones are now making me think of little micro-interactions and I'm loving it

Taking a deep breath he finally went through with it and rang Octavius door bell.
For a moment the audacity left him speechless. He poured out his heart and this was that uncultured pig’s response? The nerve!
He gaped at Kurt incredulously until the man made a move to grab Aurora. He stepped between them to block Kurt’s path and shoved him back, then went into his most practiced (and only) Shai-Hulu stance and did his best to look menacing. He hoped dearly it wouldn’t come to a brawl but it wasn’t like he had never thrown a punch before.
“Aurora is going nowhere she doesn’t want, you filthy…” a stream of profanity that would have been better suited for the dirty wastelands of Deponia escaped him but he was beyond caring.
“Octavius, go and get security before he tries to kidnap Aurora for real!”
Octavius went and did as he was told, or at least walked off to add that sense of pressure.
“Uhg, you absolutely foul disgrace. If that’s how you want to be then perhap-” Kurt would have continued on and dragged this situation down. It wouldn’t have been his first time turning physical either. But this time Aurora stepped in.
“Both of you enough! Kurt I am done here. And that is final.”
It was a long moment of Kurt looking down at the two. Cletus looked absolutely pathetic to him. But fighting him would have just brought himself down to that level. And just be bare proof that he hasn’t changed at all. He needs to keep up at least some appearance. Then for all he knew Octavius was dragging security over at this moment. Sure he could just say these production line rejects were assaulting them, but that would be an argument of three to one.. This situation was completely turning against his favor and he didn’t like it in the slightest. But he wasn’t going to push it further either.
“… Fine, as you say my dear. Until next time then.” With that Kurt walked off.
Cletus waited until Kurt was out of sight before getting out of his stance. Just to be safe.
Octavius wasn’t back yet and for the first time Cletus almost wished him to be here. To be alone with Aurora now felt terribly awkward.
Should he ask her why she hadn’t trusted him with the information she was meeting with Kurt? What if she told him that it was because she’d never been serious about her relationship? And why had he made himself so vulnerable by talking about his feelings? He was usually so much more sensible.
Standing awkwardly, his arms dangling at his sides, he remained silent and didn’t dare turning to face Aurora.
Octavius wasn’t going to come back. At least for quite a bit. After a piece like that he can let the two have their own moment.
When Kurt was finally out of view Aurora just sighed and looked up at Cletus. After a moment more she gently put her hand on his shoulder. “Are you alright?”
Her touch made him flinch slightly but he didn’t try to shake her off
“I…”, he cleared his throat, trying to sound indifferent and nonchalant. “I’m fine. He didn’t even touch me. What about you?”
"Cletus I don't mean physically." She moved in front of him so they were at least facing each other. "Are you ok?"
Cletus approached the door hesitantly. He reached for the door bell, then stopped and started to turn back. He hated having to ask for something. Especially asking him for something.

Taking a deep breath he finally went through with it and rang Octavius door bell.
“Take me with you.” The words were out before he could even think things through. But he refused to be left behind while Octavius went out there and saved his girlfriend.
“… alright fine, come on then.” He didn’t see much of a point trying to argue with Cletus to stay away. And leaving himself with that bastard didn’t sound like a good idea either, even if Aurora was there.
Octavius led the way then.
This was an awful day!
Having to ask Octavius for help for assistance had been bad enough. He may no longer hate this fellow Elysian but he refused to see him as a friend of any sort. He just couldn’t forget how he had kept flirting with Goal back when she and Cletus were technically still an item.
And it bothered it him to see his own face on somebody else, no matter the reason.
Still, he hated Kurt a lot more. To think Aurora had gone to meet with this slimebag made his stomach churn. What had she been thinking? And why didn’t she tell him? Maybe she didn’t want him to come. Maybe trying to help her was a terrible idea. Maybe not doing anything was even worse.
Being occupied with all his thoughts made him almost run into a tree. He wanted to curse loudly but then he spotted Aurora and Kurt not too far away and froze, all his doubts keeping him from making another step.
They were just close enough to hear the other two.
“… you can’t be serious right? You were never one to joke like this but I can get used to a change like this.”
“I’m not joking Kurt, you know I’m not.”
Kurt had a soft smile but his expression quickly changed to disappointment. “I see, oh you poor thing. First the one that clings to you like a lost child and now this? You really do love collecting those mass produced rejects don’t you?”
“Don’t you dare call them that.”
“What, call them what they are? Errors in coding that made rogue clones that truly think they’re like any of us? They are nothing more than delusional tools to use, you know this. And to think you would want that over me. My strawberry you must be playing a trick on me. And if it’s to pull me in then it’s working.”
Kurt stepped closer to hold Aurora by the chin like he used to do but she took two steps back.
“Don’t touch me.”
It took every ounce of Octavius’ concentration to not let his anger snap then and there. For Aurora’s sake he won’t cause a scene.
Cletus was pretty sure he had nightmares that were nowhere near as bad as this.
Hearing all the things that ever made him doubt himself spoken like this, as a weapon against someone he cared about was the worst. Worse than having to eat Deponian food, worse even than being strung up by your underwear.
He vaguely noticed Octavius standing back yet but couldn’t bring himself to showing the same restraint.
Without thinking his legs moved again and carried him closer.
“No,” he whispered, then repeated ever louder. “No! No, you’re wrong. About everything.”
The sudden interjection caused the two of them to look over and Aurora made a move over to them, hiding just a bit behind Cletus.
“Well speak of the devils and they come running. Even with the gall to talk back to me. In a private conversation. Dear were you planning this?”
“Does it matter, either way your conversation is over.” Octavius spoke wanting this all to end quickly. Though knowing fully well it probably wouldn’t.
“It’s over when I say it is. Now you two run along go tend to something else.”
Having Aurora actually standing next to him felt invigorating.
He still didn’t know why she had kept this meeting from him but maybe not all was lost.
“We’ll stay and you’ll have to listen, bub. I don’t care what you think about me, but you are most mistaken about Aurora. You don’t deserve her. You don’t even deserve to be in the same place with her. Because you’re nothing but a small-minded fool who has talked himself into believing he matters. But she… she is good. She is clever and lovely and more kind than she should be. Even to someone like me. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me and even though I might not deserve her, I know that you definitely don’t deserve her.”
The little speech did touch her heart. Kurt though was simply left with a purely unamused expression.
"You at least got one thing right, you don't deserve her. And it's simply laughable to see you try to be and to think you have anything over me.
