RSSImportr - the End

It's been quite a while since my last status update, but I've been side-tracked a lot with some other personal projects.

Like I said in the last update, I've not been able to do justice to the app, and I am finding it increasingly difficult to devote time to this project. As a result, I'm shutting down the app for good.

I would like to use this opportunity to once again thank every one of you for using the app and providing feedback - this app has helped me launch myself as a developer.

Along the way, I of course learnt more about programming, but at the same time it has helped me gain insights into User expectations and usage behavior [you might build an app intending something, but your users will use it in an entirely different way! :) ]

I currently have no plans with the domain name and the source code for the app, but this might change in the future - you can follow me on my blog or on twitter for updates.

P.S: Needless to say, all data collected from users will be deleted in the coming days.

Important Status Update

Hey all! It's been almost six months since I launched RSSImportr, and since then, close to 2000 users have signed up for the service, adding nearly 3500 feeds! Thanks to one and all, for using the app, and for providing your valuable feedback.

Sadly however, although I created the app as a personal side-project (read more here), I have not been able to devote the type of time and money required to achieve the level of polish and feature-completeness I would've liked. 

And as more users start using the app, maintaining it too, has been difficult. Issues, like a post getting imported multiple times due to backlogs, have kept cropping up (My apologies to anyone who might've been affected).

It is due to these reasons that i'm scaling back the app a little bit. Posts will now be imported every two hours, instead of one.

I will see how this goes, and rethink my plans for the app. Will keep you posted on updates.

Update: The backlog problem is still persisting. I'm stopping the service to identify where exactly the problem is. Thanks for your patience..  Stay tuned for further updates.

TumblRSS is now RSS Importr

So I got a mail from Tumblr Support.. Apparently the name TumblRSS is in violation of the API terms of service. 

I'm therefore changing the name of the app to RSS Importr (sigh, i really liked TumblRSS!). The old domain will going forward redirect to www.rssimportr.com.

Stuff in the backend should continue working as-is..

TumblRSS temporarily unavailable [Updated]

Some of you may have noticed that the same post has been imported multiple times on your blog recently. This was basically caused by a large backlog of entries due for posting, that were not posted due to memory constraints on my host, Heroku. The entire posting queue was somehow messed up as a result.

If your blog has been affected by this, please accept my sincere apologies. I'm doing the best I can to squash this bug.

Until I do, TumblRSS will be temporarily out of service. Thanks for your patience and support.

update: Things should work as expected now. Let me know if there're any issues.

Tumblr API Login Issues

Update (24th October): While the issue seemed to have been resolved for a few days, it's now cropped up again. If you're not able to login, trying after sometime usually seems to work.

Some of you might have faced issues in logging-in to tumblRSS over the last couple of days.

I’ve been following up with tumblr to resolve the issue. Looks like their API might be acting up again.

However, this time only the authentication part is affected - the app is still able to post to tumblrs for existing feeds.

Will post an update once the issue has been identified and resolved.

Looks like Tumblr's API servers are down [UPDATE]

Update: Looks like Tumblr is back to normal.

Posting from TumblRSS isn't working at the moment, as it seems Tumblr's API servers are over capacity.

Support for Link Posts now Live

I've just added support for posting entries from a Feed as a Link post. All posts imported from such a feed will be posted as Link posts, with the URL set to the source content.

Unfortunately, it was not possible to support descriptions on the posts, as there were too many variations in the feed structure from Feed to Feed - some feeds had a short summary of each post, while some had only the full content.

TumblRSS: State of the App

First off, thanks to everyone who's been using the app, and providing feedback. Just wanted to provide an update on some of the 'issues' I've identified so far, and some of the upcoming features. Right, first the not-so-good news.The first issue is with regards to the posting limits specified by Tumblr. It is currently possible to post a maximum of 100 posts per day per account, with this limit being reset everyday. However, when someone using TumblRSS generates that many posts in a single day, it doesn't seem like the limit is reset everyday - instead, the app is constantly blocked by Tumblr for that user. I'm looking for workarounds for this limitation. For now, please ensure that the feeds you specify don't generate those many posts in a day. The second issue - when a post is updated on the source blog, Tumblrss ends up posting it as a new post. I'm looking at using a combination of GUIDs in the feed, and Post IDs from tumblr to ensure that an update at one end will also update the other. Will keep you posted. Now, onto new features. The first one isn't a feature per se. Just wanted to let you know that TumblRSS now posts only the latest post when it runs for the first time. On one hand, this reduces the chance of Issue #1 occurring. On the other, this means that you don't have to spend time deleting unwanted posts from your Tumblr blog. The second - this is a feature :) - I will soon add support for specifying a feed as a link blog. Every post imported will be a link post, linking to the source. Well, that's it for now.
