Surprise?
âYeah, Iâm actually surprised he let you in without a cavity check first,â he chuckled, even though it was only half a joke. She got up to hug him, and of course he welcomed the gesture. âYou know you if you were missing that badly, you couldâve just called or something?â He hugged her back tightly, holding on for a bit until he caught a whiff of her. âUgh, you smell like Nicâs car that one summer dad made him drive around the homelessâŠâ  his face was scrunched in disgust as he held her at armâs length and turned his head to the side. âHow did you get here anyway? Are dad and Marcos with you?â He knew the answer to that last question simply by the look on her face, and the fact that their dad would never allow his siblings to miss school and trek to New York just because they missed him. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. âDoes dad know youâre here?â he asked, searching her face for answer. Subconsciously it was like he knew what her response to that question as would be, but he felt like he needed her to say it just to be sure.
Ruby let her brother hug her for a few seconds, happy to be so far away from Ohio and with someone who understood. She winced, âSorry.. you know.. bus stations.. if youâre in one for long enough, they kinda seep into everything. Iâll shower or something. But in my defense, nothing will ever smell as bad as his car did that summer.â The brunette thought back to her night in the bus station and the long ride but she just shrugged, âI took a bus early this morning before either of them were up.. I didnât want to chance being questioned or whatever.â Ruby shook her head and looked down at the ground suddenly feeling like a little kid who knew they messed up but who was also hoping that somehow they would get away with it, âNo.. No I just kinda.. I mean I left Marcos a note so he may have told him, but I asked him not to. But I havenât heard anything from Dad so he doesnât seem too concerned. I texted Nic when the bus got here so if he talked to Marcos he wouldnât freak..But we got in a fight so I figured Dad didnât really need to know what I was doing.â Ruby stopped rambling and in an attempt to downplay the entire situation, shrugged, âWhoops?â
Surprise?
Even though the week had barely started, Jake was already tried and ready for it to be over. He was relieved his last class of the day had finally ended so he could go home and take a nap. The train ride home went smoothly and he felt like he could finally breathe when he made it home, but a wave of worry hit him when he saw one of his roommates, Alex, the uptight kid with OCD he got stuck with this year, standing outside their door with an annoyed look on his face. This wasnât anything new, since almost everything annoyed they guy, but he seemed almost extra annoyed for some reason. Jake took a breath and headed towards the door, figuring he would just ignore the guy and slide his way inside, but he was stopped before he had the chance. Alex told him he had a visitorâa female visitor and the proceeded to tell him how he should keep his guest visits to a minimum or something like that. Not wanting to hear another lecture, he pushed passed the other guy and opened the door and made a b line for his room. His brows furrowed when he noticed his door was slightly open. He sighed and kicked it the rest of the way open with his foot and walked inside, blindly tossing his backpack on the bed, next to Ruby⊠the last female visitor he expected to see. âUhâŠhey?â he questioned, eyebrows raised in surprise. As far as he knew, it was a regular Tuesday afternoon, there was no special holiday that he could think of. She should still be in school⊠in Ohio. âWhat are you doing here? Last time I checked, I left you in Lima.â
Ruby had had a very long, gross, bus ride to convince herself that running to see Jake for as long as he would allow was the best thing for her and her father. The fight they had had the night before had gone beyond anything that the two of them had ever had before and as soon as Joe had gone to sleep, she had packed a bag, left a note for Marcos, and headed to the bus station. The first bus to New York didnât leave until 7am, so he had a choice. Go to a friends house and risk having them tell Jake she was coming and therefore having him stop her, or sleep in the bus station and hope for the best. Ruby went for option two and curled up on a bench. She woke up around 6:45 the next morning and boarded the bus for New York. Eventually, after a lot of thinking and her fathers words replaying in her head the bus stopped and she was in New York. Far away from her problems and just a quick walk away from her best friend. The brunette reached Jakeâs dorm and let herself up. His roommate answered the door, âH-Hey.. Iâm here for Jake? Is he home? I can just wait in his room if itâs easier.â The boy just stared at her and Ruby wasnât sure if it was because she was beautiful or because she smelled like a bus station, âOkay.. Iâll just go to his room than.â Ruby just pushed past him and heard the door shut and the kid leave. She took a deep breath and walked into her older brotherâs room, collapsing on his bed. She thought more about the night before and was getting more and more upset when Jake came in the room and stared at her. This was either going to go really well or she would be on a bus back to Lima in the hour, âHey! Um yeah.. you did.. and I decided to leave Lima. Or something like that.. Your roommate is weird by the way.â She got up and gave him a quick hug, âIs it a bad week? I figured Iâd surprise you.â

Shut Up And Dance || Maya & Elise
âTrue. Thereâs the in laws and then his old wifeâs grandparents, and then family. Its a lot to take in.â Maya rolled her eyes instead of laughing along, choosing not to comment because she didnât want things to turn sour. âThere were no dirty details to spare. We havenât even made out yet, so you werenât missing much of anything.â Maya chuckled. âWell damn, didnât think you had it in you. Behind you.â She leaned back in the couch. âIâm not picky with what I drink. Iâm going to go ahead and order the Chinese food alright?â
âYeah not to mention the kids.. Just make sure you really know what youâre doing before you do anything. Thatâs allâ Ruby didnât feel the need to press the issue of Maya bringing up her mother because she didnât want to ruin the afternoon, but she wasnât over it. She looked at the other girl confused, âHow can you be a thing if you havenât even made out yet?â She walked over to the bar, âWell. Good to know you donât really listen to gossip or you would know.â Ruby nodded and pulled out a bottle of vodka âIâll pour shots and then make some actual drink. Please order or this could go south quicklyâ
Itâs not funny.
Shut Up And Dance || Maya & Elise
âWhat do you mean?â Maya sat on her hands. âYeah. I havenât really talked to anyone about it. It was whatever really, I got over it pretty quickly. Iâd like to think you and I are pretty cool.â She sighed. âHow has she been? I uh I miss her.â Maya put her hands to her mouth when she heard what Emma said and she nearly screamed. âVodka and boys? Donât tell me you had a drunken gangbang or something!â Maya laughed and stood up. âWe can order Chinese food, get drunk, and jam out.â
âI just mean on one ever plans on leaving, but life changes and sometimes kids get hurt. You just have to think a little in the future thatâs all. There are other people involved than just you and him.â Ruby shrugged, âWeâre fine I guess. I was pissed, but then again I never talked about your parents.â She chuckled, âNothing really, just that you two were talking or doing whatever. I didnât get the dirty details and I didnât ask.â Ruby kicked her slightly, âNo! Not a gangbang, damn. But a drunken everything else I guess.â She stood up and looked around, âSounds good! Whereâs the bar, Iâm great at being a bartender trust me.â
Thank god Iâm smart or the first round of exams would be horrible. However, my study area in the kitchen has been taken over by a bible study and I just got asked to cook them dinner so...

âIf I become his wife that wouldnât matter.â Maya said quietly. âEmma? Yeah. I havenât seen her in the longest. I miss her.â She pulled her feet up onto the cushions. âOh, she told you about us? Quite honestly I donât exactly know whatâs going on between us but its nice. At first I didnât think she was even into girls.â Maya blushed. âI didnât really think I was into them either. Anyway, so what do you want to do?â
âYeah.. thatâs what they all think at first.â Ruby said, half to herself half to Maya. âYeah she told me.â She leaned back in the couch and chuckled, âShe made me promise not to be mad about it because, regardless of what it may appear sometimes, weâre friends and she knew things that had happened between us so she was giving me a heads up. Not gossiping.â Ruby shrugged and looked around, âI donât know. My idea of fun usually involves my older brothers friends and a bottle of vodka.â She laughed, âIt doesnât always end well. Whatever you want to do.â
Halloween is okay, itâs just all the hype that frustrates me, and the knowledge that the rest of the holidays are right around the corner.
I donât think about the ones coming because believe me, those are hell. But watching my dad get more and more upset as October goes on? Thatâs something I can thoroughly enjoy.
Itâs annoying. I also tend not to like the holidays as it is, Halloween starts the holidays. So, having people start it in mid-September is far too much.
Believe me, Iâm not a fan of holidays either at all, but Halloween is kinda cool. Maybe itâs because my dad hates it so much that it brings me some kind of joy..
Also not a big fan of the people who start getting ready for Halloween in mid September.
Really? I kinda like it. Their commitment is something else.
Done with the bullshit, mostly.
I feel that.
Sorry if Iâm lacking manners tonight, Iâm not exactly happy.
That makes two of us, whatâs up? You donât actually have to tell me I guess

âIts not that hard to look after kids.â Maya shrugged. âAll you have to do is feed them and make sure theyâre loved and protect them and stuff. Its not that hard.â Maya nodded and turned. âMmkay hanging out it is.â She turned the tv on. âCâmon girl, make yourself at home!â Maya sat down one of the couches. âWell, have you seen anyone around? I havenât. Iâd ask this girl Iâm kinda seeing but I havenât seen her around.â
âIt isnât until they can start to figure out who people are and where you go and stuff like that. Then it gets hard and youâre more trapped.â Ruby followed her and plopped down next to her on the couch, âNo, but still. Who Emma? Sheâs probably busy with Cheerios starting again. And yeah she told me.âÂ
So people should just accept youâre niceness even when it, oh I donât, isnât needed or wanted?
I mean, thatâs whatâs considered polite, but itâs cool. You do you.
