Surprise?
ruby-hartxx:
Ruby had had a very long, gross, bus ride to convince herself that running to see Jake for as long as he would allow was the best thing for her and her father. The fight they had had the night before had gone beyond anything that the two of them had ever had before and as soon as Joe had gone to sleep, she had packed a bag, left a note for Marcos, and headed to the bus station. The first bus to New York didn’t leave until 7am, so he had a choice. Go to a friends house and risk having them tell Jake she was coming and therefore having him stop her, or sleep in the bus station and hope for the best. Ruby went for option two and curled up on a bench. She woke up around 6:45 the next morning and boarded the bus for New York. Eventually, after a lot of thinking and her fathers words replaying in her head the bus stopped and she was in New York. Far away from her problems and just a quick walk away from her best friend. The brunette reached Jake’s dorm and let herself up. His roommate answered the door, “H-Hey.. I’m here for Jake? Is he home? I can just wait in his room if it’s easier.” The boy just stared at her and Ruby wasn’t sure if it was because she was beautiful or because she smelled like a bus station, “Okay.. I’ll just go to his room than.” Ruby just pushed past him and heard the door shut and the kid leave. She took a deep breath and walked into her older brother’s room, collapsing on his bed. She thought more about the night before and was getting more and more upset when Jake came in the room and stared at her. This was either going to go really well or she would be on a bus back to Lima in the hour, “Hey! Um yeah.. you did.. and I decided to leave Lima. Or something like that.. Your roommate is weird by the way.” She got up and gave him a quick hug, “Is it a bad week? I figured I’d surprise you.”
“Yeah, I’m actually surprised he let you in without a cavity check first,” he chuckled, even though it was only half a joke. She got up to hug him, and of course he welcomed the gesture. “You know you if you were missing that badly, you could’ve just called or something?” He hugged her back tightly, holding on for a bit until he caught a whiff of her. “Ugh, you smell like Nic’s car that one summer dad made him drive around the homeless…” his face was scrunched in disgust as he held her at arm’s length and turned his head to the side. “How did you get here anyway? Are dad and Marcos with you?” He knew the answer to that last question simply by the look on her face, and the fact that their dad would never allow his siblings to miss school and trek to New York just because they missed him. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Does dad know you’re here?” he asked, searching her face for answer. Subconsciously it was like he knew what her response to that question as would be, but he felt like he needed her to say it just to be sure.
Surprise?
Even though the week had barely started, Jake was already tried and ready for it to be over. He was relieved his last class of the day had finally ended so he could go home and take a nap. The train ride home went smoothly and he felt like he could finally breathe when he made it home, but a wave of worry hit him when he saw one of his roommates, Alex, the uptight kid with OCD he got stuck with this year, standing outside their door with an annoyed look on his face. This wasn’t anything new, since almost everything annoyed they guy, but he seemed almost extra annoyed for some reason. Jake took a breath and headed towards the door, figuring he would just ignore the guy and slide his way inside, but he was stopped before he had the chance. Alex told him he had a visitor—a female visitor and the proceeded to tell him how he should keep his guest visits to a minimum or something like that. Not wanting to hear another lecture, he pushed passed the other guy and opened the door and made a b line for his room. His brows furrowed when he noticed his door was slightly open. He sighed and kicked it the rest of the way open with his foot and walked inside, blindly tossing his backpack on the bed, next to Ruby… the last female visitor he expected to see. “Uh…hey?” he questioned, eyebrows raised in surprise. As far as he knew, it was a regular Tuesday afternoon, there was no special holiday that he could think of. She should still be in school… in Ohio. “What are you doing here? Last time I checked, I left you in Lima.”
ruby-hartxx:
Thank god I’m smart or the first round of exams would be horrible. However, my study area in the kitchen has been taken over by a bible study and I just got asked to cook them dinner so…
Ha.
ruby-hartxx:
Oh… I was just.. Yeah I was just curious
I don’t know, it’s just... every time I would say something about how I wasn’t good enough or how I wished I was different so dad would like me more, she wouldn’t let me have a pity party.
ruby-hartxx:
True, but for that week it would be so worth it. Um.. one quick question then I’ll drop the subject forever because I also hate it but.. what you almost said.. me being a mini.. is that good or bad or just like a generic statement?
I don’t know what I was saying, honestly.
ruby-hartxx:
He’d disown you but I think it’d be worth it.
For like a week. He’d get to punch me in the arm then everything would be ok.
ruby-hartxx:
We’ll never agree on this, but for what it’s worth I don’t think you’re a mess. Yeah same here. I’m going to share the best stories at his wedding, I can’t wait.
Mhm. I can’t wait that long. If I ever find the time I’d write a booklet and pass it around, free laughs.
ruby-hartxx:
But your point was wrong so… I would never forget a moment that involves embarrassing Nic. That’s against my religion.
No it wasn’t, it’s the truth as I see it. Same, it’s all banked for future reference.
ruby-hartxx:
You. Aren’t. A. Fuck up. I’d tell you if you were, believe me. That’s the goal. This is going to be great.
Ok, God, take it easy. I’m just making a general point. You cant forget, six months is a long time.
ruby-hartxx:
Um, you get to do everything first, the rules stop applying to you first, you get freedom first, you get to be the cool older brother! Yeah… yeah i can’t argue with that. This is so great, can we record it? We can become more famous than dad.
Well, all that’s true. I guess after the first kid fucks up, it’s easier to accept the disappointment of the rest. Heck yeah. I hope he cries, it would probably get remixed by those guys on youtube and become a hit song.
ruby-hartxx:
Um as much as third child and only girl isn’t as much as it’s cracked up to be, I really wouldn’t change places. I mean i have the ability to do both, but I really really want to do this spring break thing. It’s like our right as siblings to get to do this.
But there are so many perks of being the oldest like... I can’t think of any. Middle kids are always the most complicated, so never mind. We’re doing it, it’s gonna happen.
ruby-hartxx:
Yeah I’m glad too, I do not want that job. It isn’t that, it was just a good metaphor! Dunno, it’s more fun there, there’s stuff to do, I have friends that go there now that who offered that I can stay with them so it just sounds like fun. But your idea sounds like even more fun
We should trade places. Well yeah, that makes more sense, you could do that too...
mayaelisee:
“I’ve been alright. Terribly lonely since no one in my family is really around. I’ve been getting to a lot of baking lately.”
That’s what friends are for, have a sleepover. What do you like to bake?
ruby-hartxx:
We don’t even need disguises. He won’t have any reason to suspect that we’re coming so we can just show up as ourselves and he’ll look like hes seen ghosts but they won’t be ghosts they’ll be us and we’re infinitely better than ghosts and then we can all have the best spring break except maybe for Dominic because he’ll be embarrassed. But he wasn’t even why I wanted to go to OSU in the first place, but I love this idea.
I’m really glad I’m the oldest... sometimes. Your thought process includes ghosts and I’m just going to chalk it up to it being so close to Halloween because really. Why did you wanna go up there then?
ruby-hartxx:
Totally forgotten…. Can we?? He’d probably be so excited you were there then I can show up and break his heart! Jake this is one of your better ideas by far.
It’s the best. We should all wear disguises too, like the Brady Bunch or something awful like that.
mayaelisee:
“Well that’s good. How are you holding up?”
I’m okay, just trying to get my shit together. Other than trying to juggle sugar daddies, how have you been?
