Aaaages ago my friend gave me his dragon model to paint after I offered to do it. I did get her out a little while back to paint but had such a bad experience with my airbrush not playing nice that I didn't end up starting her. I've finally felt in a creative frame of mind and I'm really pleased how she turned out. She's less vibrant than she photographs, more of a dark red.
I did have a bit of a disaster where I didn't realise I had paint on my finger and smudged it on her wing and there's some light areas where the red came off because I was holding her before the paint was dry but I'm trying to shift my mindset from "these are mistakes I must learn from and not repeat" to "fuckups happen, it can still look good". Gonna add a bit more chameleon paint as the wash mostly covered it so hopefully I don't go overboard on that.
Looking forward to giving her to my friend. I love his insistence that she's a girl dragon, I fall too often into male as default. And I also appreciate his patience so I hope she's worth the wait!
I finally got round to painting my pseudodragon - the companion of my doll Sariel. I think they're red usually but I based him on the colour of my first set of D&D dice. I'm really pleased with how he turned out, the colour shift paint is so pretty, I'm tempted to buy more (even though I bought two new colours to try on him and ended up using the one I already had!)
In the background is the dragon model my friend gave me ages ago when I offered to paint it for him. I've been putting off painting him because I wanted to do a decent job and my success with Spinel is giving me hope I'll finally be able to get a result I'm proud of and will feel happy about giving back to my friend.
It’s okay to not be okay. It can be helpful to transform that “not okay” to a “not okay yet”. I always feel more hopeful remembering that I will be okay again, and the period of not being okay doesn’t last forever. ♡
An update for users in Brazil and the United Kingdom
To continue our commitment to user safety and to comply with local laws, we will start using age groups to determine access to certain experiences.
People in Brazil or in the UK, who are 18 or older, will soon need to verify their age to change content label settings and view mature-labeled content. Until then, the settings will be locked to hide.
As a reminder, verification is handled by our age-assurance partner, k-ID. Tumblr won't have access to the information you submit, just the final age-verification result. Documents are deleted after confirmation, and facial scan data never leaves your device.

I finally decided to do Vanuath's faceup...lips went well, ears looked good...and my attempt to do navy eyeliner went very very badly. I eventually gave up, figuring it wasn't sealed so I could attempt to wash off the watercolour, but once he was back on his body with his wig I decided I didn't love how pale he was. Maybe I could eventually pull off the pink and blue sort of ethereal look I had in mind, but it didn't suit his character. So I decided to dye him again.
I planned for him to be a bit lighter but in trying to get his torso even he ended up darker but I think I like it. I'm a bit torn if the blue wig still works but I probably won't change it.
Now to do his faceup - and somehow get his eyebrows right because I did not succeed first time around!
I know, I know, I need to get the shot.
Okay, hear me out.
One of the quiet background realities of the Star Wars galaxy is that it is spectacularly bad at labor. Not just “late-stage capitalism” bad, but structurally, culturally, and institutionally allergic to the idea that workers should have enforceable protections. You’ve got child soldiers, child labor, debt slavery, corporate fiefdoms, and a Republic that can field a galaxy-spanning bureaucracy but somehow never gets around to standardizing “maybe don’t enslave people.” The Empire of course doesn’t fix this; it industrializes it.
So in that environment, formal labor law is either nonexistent, unenforced, or actively hostile. Which means if you’re operating in a sector where the state either can’t or won’t protect you, you get a classic historical pattern: workers build their own rules.
Enter the gray economies.
Groups like the Smugglers' Alliance (Legends) and the Bounty Hunters' Guild (new canon) look, at first glance, like professional associations for criminals. But if you squint at them through a labor history lens, they start to look a lot like early, proto-union structures — especially the kinds you see in maritime or extralegal industries on Earth.
Think pirate codes (yes actual ones, Pirates of the Caribbean didn't make that up). Think matelotage agreements. Think dockworker brotherhoods that predate formal unions.
Because what do these groups actually do?
They:
set norms for compensation and contracts
regulate competition to prevent destructive undercutting
provide a framework for dispute resolution
establish reputational systems (“you don’t honor contracts, you don’t get work”)
That’s industry self-governance in the absence of law.
Take bounty hunting. Without something like the Bounty Hunters' Guild, the field collapses into chaos: clients don’t pay; hunters underbid each other into oblivion; jobs get duplicated, interfered with, or sabotaged. And nobody trusts anybody!
The Guild steps in and says: here are the rules of engagement. Here’s how claims work. Here’s how you get paid. Here’s what happens if you break contract.
That’s basically a union crossed with a licensing board and a regulatory agency, just without any moral pretense.
Same with the Smugglers' Alliance. Smuggling is inherently risky, decentralized, and dependent on trust networks. If everyone is constantly betraying everyone else, the whole system stops functioning. So instead, you hash out agreed-upon routes and territories, informal protections against betrayal, mechanisms for information sharing, and consequences for breaking the code
Again: not altruism. Stability.
And the reason this emerges specifically in gray/illegal sectors is because they have to. The Core Worlds might pretend they have laws, but those laws don’t meaningfully protect the people actually doing dangerous, itinerant, high-risk work. So the margins of the galaxy — where enforcement is weakest and risk is highest — become the places where labor organization evolves first.
Which is very historically grounded.
On Earth, some of the earliest labor protections didn’t come from governments; they came from workers in dangerous, decentralized industries—sailors, pirates, miners—who literally wrote their own rules because no one else was going to save them.
Pirate codes, for example, often included:
compensation for injury
shared distribution of loot
limits on captain authority
Which is … shockingly progressive compared to a lot of contemporary working conditions (cough Amazon cough).
So in the galaxy far, far away, you end up with this ironic inversion:
The “legitimate” systems — Republic, Empire, megacorporations — are exploitative, inconsistent, or indifferent.
The “illegitimate” systems — smugglers, bounty hunters — are the ones building functional labor frameworks, because they need to survive.
And that feeds back into why the galaxy feels so unstable overall. There’s no universal baseline of rights. Everything is hyper-local, network-dependent, and contingent on whether you’re inside a system that has rules you can rely on.
If you’re a clone trooper? You are literally property.
If you’re a factory worker on a corporate world? Your protections are whatever your employer feels like offering.
But if you’re a smuggler or a bounty hunter?
You might actually have clearer expectations about your pay, your risks, and your recourse — because your “union” is the only thing standing between you and total chaos.
So yeah: the Smugglers’ Alliance and the Bounty Hunters’ Guild aren’t just flavor. They’re a glimpse of what labor organization looks like in a galaxy where the state has fundamentally failed to provide it.
Which is both deeply funny and a little too real.
#you're telling me han solo is a union man? (via @professorsparklepants)
Han Solo look SO MUCH like a union man.
The Royal Armouries let me play about in their armour!
(This was a set from someone similar in size to me, but it wasn’t exactly correct in all dimensions. Real knights often wore armour that was made to measure, which would allow for a slightly better range of motion. However, for a video game or film character that has looted armour, then something that fits as well as this would be a best case scenario, so it still tells us a fair bit!)
Went to see Welcome to Night Vale in London. Was really cool to be back in Union Chapel which was the first place we saw them back in 2014. And also cool because last time we went to the wrong venue and ended up racing across London, which was not great in shoes I'd worn expecting to be sitting most of the time, but we did get to sit on the top deck of a double decker so that made up for it!
Was really nice to see loads of new fans and for those who were attending their first live show, I hope they loved it! The first time I went was not long after my dad died. It was unexpected and the grief hit me hard. They announced the tour and I felt the first spark of hope and happiness I'd experienced in a while. Then it clashed with a trip away I'd already booked with a friend but she kindly agreed to come back early so we could go. Then I think it sold out. But they added another date so I was able to go. I'm so grateful I got to have that experience.
At that time, I'd listen to WTNV while walking the dog. It was a welcome distraction from interactions with other dog walkers who would recognise my dog, and ask about my dad who used to walk her. They were always kind and it was heartwarming to know how many people thought well of my dad but it was exhausting breaking the news over and over when I just wanted to forget about it for a while and have some peace. Night Vale helped me feel stuff again, without drowning me in grief, or leaving me hollow because I couldn't enjoy things I would have before.
I fell off listening to the podcast quite a bit after we lost the dog and the walk was no longer part of my routine. And then I went through another rough patch, this time not triggered by anything specific. It got pretty bad, to the point I lost a friend because I was drained from trying to be there for her while she was unable to help me. I was on the park and ride into the city and I decided to listen to Night Vale. And I think that's when I began to heal. Everything I enjoyed had felt so grey and more like a chore but unlike most of the things I'd avoided because I feared I'd feel nothing, it still made me happy.
So it meant a lot to see them still touring. I love the little improv-y bits that seem to be included as a bit of fun for the cast. Disparition almost made me like AI but was actually a reminder of how wonderful humans can be. I looked around at the audience quite a lot. Everyone was so engaged. We expected mostly older people but there was a full range. It was good to see.
Does it count as writing if you're ignoring the part of the story you've actually got to in favour of daydreaming about the two sequels that you haven't even started writing? With the lows of "okay, so event A leads to event B which leads to event C....but event C is what triggers event A..." and the highs of "ooh but what if we connect this character to the plot device by this in their past?"
Actually, I don't care. I'm enjoying it. And I'm my only reader so gotta give the audience what they want!

Dear friends, this is a special post for me. 😸
I know it might feel a bit early, since we’re only in May… but the first purr.in.ink calendars are finally a thing, and I’m very happy to share them with you.
This is something many of you have been asking for for a long, long time, and it took me quite a while to have enough work to create something like this.
The day-to-day calendar includes a different comic or illustration for each day, so if you decide to get one, there will be a little something waiting for you every day.
Thank you in advance to everyone who chooses to get one of these. I hope they bring you a few gentle moments throughout next year. 🐾🤍
Still haven't managed to do Vanuath's faceup, partly because I can't figure out a colour palette (as a moon elf I'm thinking blues and purples but I also don't want to make him look like he's wearing FFX Lulu's lipstick), but I have managed to paint his armour and sword, which was a surprising amount of fun, and made him a shield which was a little less fun due to the faff of using press studs to attach the straps on the back. Might need to wire his arms so he's actually strong enough to hold it though!
The metal part of the shield is the one I bought but was way too small. Haven't put his armour on yet because I need to fix one of the straps and I'm still unsure about the gold on the bracers. Kudos to the sculptors at Withdoll as the unicorns were pretty easy to paint. And kinda blurry cos my camera apparently decided to focus on Shadowheart (and who can blame it?) but the blue pommel on the sword is so pretty. Even tho I accidentally touched it while wet and had to redo it.
My first doll of 2026!
I recently was able to get a hold of a head I’ve been trying to buy since 2022, a Lost Chronicles Naris. He only had one limited preorder in 2021, which I couldn’t join due to financial reasons, but I jumped on the opportunity to get an in stock head. Unfortunately the artist disappeared before any money could change hands, twice… but I finally got one this year and I’m stoked with him, he’s gorgeous!
I tested him on a few bodies at a good friend’s who also collects bjds. I had already started his Faceup, so the pics are wip stage.
I ended up buying her TD Doll 72cm V2 boy body for him. I originally painted him for a different wig, as I wanted him to have a pale green wig. I’m happy with how he’s turning out!
I probably will dye the wig greener at some point as my dear Adem is an earth elf, and needs green hair for that.
I absolutely love this hair style on him though! I’ll be blushing his neck and hands to match to his head as the color match is atrocious. But luckily it's not that noticeable in certain lighting.
Have some Faceup pics of him!
My biggest sadness though is that one of his ear tips broke off when one of my mom’s cats knocked him off my desk and the piece is gone. Luckily I have everything at home to mod, so I resculpted the ear tip with apoxie sculpt. I didn’t want to restart the Faceup, so I patched the paint job best I could on the ear. I’m happy it’s hardly noticeable even when looking for the repair!
He’s still missing proper shoes, but I have some in order, so soon!
Hua Cheng is too beautiful 😻
I've had Vanuath (white, blue wig) for about a year now and I haven't done much with him. The doll hobby has always ebbed and flowed but this was different. I didn't feel like doing anything, and when I did, it felt like a chore and the results never felt worth the effort. I didn't want to do his faceup and have it be bad and feel worse.
But I'm doing better. I've poked at my writing, plotted out some scenes. Sariel (tan, ginger hair) and Novalie (pink, brown hair) are dressed for Campaign 2. I haven't finished the first, so I haven't actually written anything for it but since I'm a little stuck on the first, I'm enjoying the freedom of exploring ideas for it. Vanuath isn't dressed for anything specific (he doesn't reappear until campaign 3) but I tried on a bunch of stuff to see if it would fit and was pleasantly surprised. I found a load of stuff I'd forgotten I'd bought. It's scary to think how bad the fog was that my mind was in.
I've done a couple of doll adjacent projects (boxes for clothes, not very exciting but I'm pleased how they're turning out) and as I'm hoping to get the airbrush out at the weekend to varnish one of said boxes, hopefully I'll be able to base coat Vanuath's face ready for a faceup, and if I can spray his armour too, I should be able to paint it. I've got some good metallic pens that should make it straightforward, so long as they haven't dried out as they're something else I've had for a long while but barely touched.
Vanuath's wig still needs cutting - I halved the length but the ends need neatening up. I think I need to make a wig form as I was feeling too lazy to undress him to cut it properly after the trim, and Novalie's wig needs work too. It was curly but I straightened it, but not very well as it was all I could manage at the time. I'm trying to decide if Sariel's experiences in C2 will lead to a dramatic hair chop and another wig project.
I found a tutorial for a bow so I might have another crack at that. I've always battled with my ambition exceeding my skill but for a long time I've been battling anhedonia which meant that even "good enough" wasn't good enough. I couldn't even start something I knew would be difficult when I knew that it wouldn't feel worth the effort. But I'm finally feeling excited about trying things again. The fog I've been lost in is finally clearing.
